ANOTHER OUTSTANDING PROGRAM PRESENTED LAST THURSDAY.
If you missed last week's program, you missed a good one. Corporal Laray Taylor, from the Community Services Division of the San Marcos Police Department. He gave us quite an insight on what one might learn if you enroll in the upcoming Citizen's Police Academy. Several of our club members have already gone through the Academy, and several took application forms to enroll in the next upcoming session which will begin on Tuesday, August 11, 2015. The SMPD has found that education has been most effective in gaining understanding and support from the community. The Citizen's Police Academy offers citizens unique insight into how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community.
If you are 18 years of age or older and work, reside or own a business with the City of San Marcos, you are encouraged to attend. The SMCPA is free of charge and all items needed for the program are provided.
This fall's SMCPA class begins on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, from 6pm - 9pm, at the San Marcos Police Department located at 2300 South IH 35, unless otherwise advised.

  A WALTER ZELLER AWARD PRESENTED TO STEVE FURNEY
Last Thursday, July 30th, Lt. Gov Elect John Polk presented a Walter Zeller award to fellow club member, Steve Furney. This award is given when an individual gives a one time gift of $1250 to The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. By this monetary gift, 690 women and their future babies may be saved from excruciating death. Walter Zeller made the first gift to establish the Kiwanis International Foundation in 1940. To honor a kindred spirit of generosity, Walter Zeller Fellows receive a medallion, certificate and commemorative lapel pin. Most important of all, they help put MNT where it belongs in the medical history books. Each Zeller award that is given does a part to raise $110 million by the end of 2015....and to eliminate MNT from the face of the earth. Thank you Steve.

OUR UPCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, AUGUST 6TH
Our program this coming Thursday will be brought by McBride Wilson. Our own San Marcos Police Chief, Chief Chase Stapp will be here to give a very enlightening program. Chief Stapp is a native San Marcos resident and possesses a wealth of experience, leadership skills and a deep knowledge and connection with the San Marcos community. He has over 25 years of progressive law enforcement experience after starting as an emergency communications operator with Hays County Sheriff's office. He joined SMPD in 1992 and rose through the ranks as a police officer, corporal, sergeant, commander, assistant chief to Chief.
Chief Stapp has worked in every division of the department, serving as a patrol officer, detective, narcotics investigator, training officdr and criminal investigator.
He is a 1988 graduate of San Marcos High School, a magna cum laude graduate of Texas State University 1n 1999. He is a member of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Training Advisory Board for the Texas School Safety Center at TSU . He is a member of the International Association of Police Chiefs, Texas Police Association International City Management Association, Texas Police Chiefs Association, American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the Texas Narcotics Association.
He won the SMPD Police Commendation Medal in 2000 and the Distinguished Service Award in 2008 and 2009.
Chief's Stapp's father, the late Ed Stapp served SMPD for a decade in the 1970's and later retired as a captain from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Let's have a roaring large crowd this Thursday to listen to our Chief of Police.

  "PARTY IN THE PINEY WOODS"
"Party in the Piney Woods" is the theme for this year's TX/OK District District Convention. It will be held on August 6 - 8, 2015. It will be held in Texarkana, TX. I believe we will be having at least three, maybe four attending from our club. President Del cannot attend because of another commitment, but our President Elect, Moe Johnson will be going, as well as John Polk, our future Lt. Governor and Rob Martin, our current Lt. Governor will be going. Frederick Case will also be going. Let's wish them all well. Our club program on August 13 will be to hear reports from those who attended.

OH WELL!

The newlyy arrived soul thought for a moment and replied....'Yeah, once I was driving along and came upon a person who was being harassed by a group of thugs. So I pulled over, got out a baseball bat, and went up to the leader of the thugs. He was a big, muscular guy with a ring pierced through his lip. Well, I tore the ring out of his lip, and told him he and his gang had better stop bothering this guy or they would have to deal with me!'
'Wow! That's impressive. When did this happen?' said the angel.
'About three minutes ago,' came the reply"

 WE HAD A WINNER LAST WEEK,!!!!!
In case y'all didn't know, our Treasurer puts in $2.00 to the Big Bucks jar each week. Depending on what the winner wants to do with his winnings, that amount grows & grows. This last week, our Treasurer, Randy Cook's name was drawn and even though the amount was only $2.00, he elected to include that in the extra money that we as a Model Club send to The Eliminate project. Thanks Randy.

  "I KNOW THAT IT IS A BIT EARLY, BUT.........
The date is September 17, 2015. The event is 'Installation Banquet'. The place is 'The Price Center' on San Antonio Street, Our President Elect Moe Johnson has arranged to have LTC Tony Williams present to speak to us. He is currently an instructor in SMHS for the JRROTC program. We have had him for a program before and he is wonderful. Do plan on being there.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE WEEK OF 30 JULY - AUGUST 3.
July 31, 1790..........The U.S. Patent Office first opened its doors. The first U.S. patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins of Vermont for a new method of making pearlash and potash. The patent was signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
August 1, 1944........Anne Frank penned her last entry into her diary. "I keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if....there weren't any other people living in the world." Three days later, Anne and her family were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Anne died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on March 15, 1945, at age 15.
August 2, 1923...........President Warren G. Harding died suddenly in a hotel in San Francisco while on a Western speaking tour. His administration had been tainted by the Teapot Dome political scandal and his sudden death prompted man y unfounded rumors. He was succeeded the next day by Calvin Coolidge.
August 3, 1492........Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, with three ships, Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. Seeking a westerly route to the Far East, he landed on October 12th in the Bahamas, thinking it was an outlying Japanese island.
August 4, 1964........Three young civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were found murdered and buried in an earthen dam outside Philadelphia, Mississippi. They had disappeared on June 21 after being detained by Neshoba County police on charges of speeding. They were participating in the Mississippi Summer Project organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to increase black voter registration. When their car was found burned on June 23, President Lyndon Johnson ordered the FBI to search for the men.
August 5, 1861........President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the first Federal income tax, a 3% tax on incomes over $800, as an emergency wartime measure during the Civil War. However, the tax was never actually put into effect.
August 6, 1945.........The first Atomic Bomb was dropped over the center of Hiroshima sat 8:15 a.m., by the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay. The bomb detonated about 1,800 feet above ground, killing over 105,000 persons and destroying the city. Another estimated 100,000 persons later dief as a result of radiation effects.
