were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: 'Take only ONE. God is watching'. Moving further along the lunch line,, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples'"
Hooray! Hooray! Last Thursday, a new member was added to our club roles. William Doug Balkman was officially inducted into our club by our Membership & Growth Chairman, Steve Furney and his sponsor, Gary Strunk. Doug started coming to our club, first to a Roundtable, then out to help clean up Camp Kiwah, then helped put out flags, so he has jumped into Kiwanis with both feet and we rejoice with his membership. Welcome Doug.
If you haven't met Doug yet, be sure and say welcome when you see him.
Our prayers and condolences go out to Charles & Linda Johnson and family in the sudden death of their 31 year old son, Kirk. Losing a child at any age is probably one of the most difficult and painful losses. A service was held Saturday morning at the First Baptist Church, with Chrles giving the eulogy, and Rev. Mark Newton giving the Faith Lessons. There were 9 of Charles's Kiwanis family at the service.
Wow! Wow! What a grand race the October dash was! Under the superb leadership of Kelli and her committee, the race came off without a hitch. So many were involved in it, but those that came out to help at 6am last Saturday were: David Chandler, John Polk, Chester Banks, Sam Brannon, Glen Rydl, Moe Johnson, Kelli Whigham, Beverly Crumley, Randy and Pam Cook, Gary Nelson, Gary Strunk,Francis Mendez, Del Brown, Steve Whigham, Rob Martin, Tracy Herman, Lon Shell. There were Key Club members there, Medical Explorers, sorority members, lots of pictures were taken, everything worked very smoothly. There were over 50 runners, and the trophies given out were received with lots of thanks. The setting up was smooth, everyone grabbing something to do like a good team is supposed to do, and the same when we had to tear down. There was coffee, water, gatorade, bananas, bagels, donuts, etc. and the T-shirts were outstanding. Thanks to everyone that had anything to do with this race. I have a feeling it's going to be an annual event.
Just another reminder,November 8th, is our annual Veteran's Day Parade. A lot of you have signed up to help with this, we've done it in the past, and we know just how important this event is to our Veterans and to our kids. We are going to need your help from beginning to end. brochures have been made up to hand out to the children in school, we will need to help them decorate their bikes by the courthouse on the day of the parade. Let's have a great turnout for this, and be sure and wear your tee shirt from last year. NOW! We will put the frame work on the float and assemble the float itself on Friday morning, November 7th, around 9:00am at the Warehouse on Staples Road. The tractor and float will then go to Ted'sBreihan's Electric shop and remain overnight there. Saturday morning, November 8th, gather at Ted's kPlace and finish decorating the float. We will need volunteers to help decorate the bikes too. Academy has donated two new bikes to be drawn at the conclusion of parade. We need persons to ride the float and we need people to walk behind with the Kid's Brigade. Thanks, remember what we are celebrating, the veterans and this great country that we live in. Let's not forget that we will abe putting up flags on both November 8th, just around the square, in conjunction with the Veteran's Day Parade, and then our regular routes 0n November 11th, which is Veteran's Day. 1. The first weekly luncheon of the new San Marcos Kiwanis Club was held February 15, 1923 at Bond's Restaurant, with 52 new members in attendance.
2. What was happening in 1923: (a.) The Southwestern University Pirates defeat the Bobcats of SWT Normal in basketball by a score of 16-9. (b.) San Marcos had the heaviest sleet in years. (c.) The Marshall Taylor Motor Company announced a Ford Runabout for $369 F.O.B. from Detroit. (d.) Frank McGee announced an income tax service. 3. Meetings of our new club will be held on Thursdays, with a luncheon to begin promptly at 12:15 and last one hour. 4. Original name of our new club was the John E. Pritchett Chapter. The first president was: Dr. L,.L Edwards, Vice President: W.H. Harrison, Secretary Treasurer, Frank M. McGee, and the Directors were: L.J. Berry, M.D. Chitwood, Carl S. Smith, Leslie A. Cooper, Dr. Marvin Combs, W.A. Mayhall, C.C. Bond and T.A. Buckner.
