 Our deepest sympathy goes out to Kelli & Steve Whigham. Kelli's father, Larry Lasley passed away in Midland, Texas on November 9, 2015. His service was held in the Nailley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland 1t 1pm, Thursday, November 12, 2015. He was a fun loving individual committing his life as a Life Insurance Salesman. He enjoyed having coffee with friends and had a great sense of humor, telling jokes and pulling pranks. Our prayers are extended to all the family members.

  GARRY WHITE BRINGS THE PROGRAM FOR THIS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH.
Our speaker and presenter for this Thursday is Dr. Ju Long, from the Department of Computer Information Systems & Quantitative Methods.
The goal of this Department is two fold. First, to provide the foundational quantitative skills that are necessary for all students in business to succeed, and Second, to prepare the next generation for successful careers in one of the fastest growing job segments today; Information Technology.
To achieve this goal this department offers a balance between technical and managerial curriculum with an emphasis on business applications. It provides students with a broad understanding of business, a competence in computer programming, and a strong foundation to modern computing paradigms. The graduates who major in this field will be solving today's business problems with technology.
Dr. Long is well qualified in this field having gotten her B.B.A from Renmin University, also her M.B.A., her M.S.W from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and her Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin, 2004. Let's have a great turnout for her program.

WHAT CAN I SAY, I HAD THE ARTICLE WRITTEN FOR LAST WEEK'S BULLETIN, BUT FAILED TO CHANGE THE CODE FOR LAST WEEK, SO THAT'S WHY IT IS IN THIS WEEK....SORRY!
No, the weaher was not pouring down rain, thank goodness, but in spite of
the fact that the Veteran's Day Parade itself was cancelled, the Parks & Recreation got togeher and put on a fantastic replacement at the San Marcos City Activity Center. The place was packed with veterans and other individuals, and KIDS! We had probably close to 30 kids that might otherwise have ridden in the Kid's Brigade, but instead was paraded around the Center with pinwheels which they made prior to the festivities began. Our club was able to bring two new bikes & helmets, donated by the San Marcos Academy store, and after the 'parade', names were drawn, a girl and a boy, who won those two new bikes. The girl's bike was won by Valentine Dominguez and the boy's bike was won by Diego Quintanilla. Congratulations to both of you. We hope to see you riding in next year's parade.
We also had a great turnout from our Kiwanis club, all decked out in their new Veteran's Day T-Shirts. They were: Kelli Whigham, Steve Whigham,Frederick Case, Rob Martin, Moe Johnson, Del Brown, Gary Nelson, Gary Strunk, Doug Balkman, Tracy Herman, Beverly Crumley, Randy Cook, Pam Cook, Jude Prather (he did a lot of the announcing),Ted Breihan, Marcie Burleson, Veronique Hahn, and Chester Banks.

 A BIG DAY FOR VETERAN'S DAY, NOVEMBER 11TH.
Veteran's Day at DeZavala Elementary School and Miller Middle school, made those of us who represented our Kiwanis Club very proud and also very humble. The children and teachers and Administration at both of these schools went all out to make those veterans attending feel like 'super people' instead of just ordinary folks who had done a job that needed to be done, so that our country, which is the greatest country in the world recognize how valuable and important are our veterans of the Army, Navy Marines, Air Force, National Guard, and Coast Guard. Our country, great as it is has a long history in it's short annual history, of reaching out and providing assistance to other nations, and in the case of any war or altercation, some veterans gave their full measure of devotion on the battlefields all over the world. We have heard of wars like the Revolution War, The War of 1812, The Spanish American War, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, all all of our current battles going on in the Middle East, where our brave men & women are doing what thousands and thousands of soldiers, marines, airmen, sailors have done over the 240 years that our nation has been a nation, and that is fighting for freedom. I have researched the number of battles in which our country has gone to other countries and either fought or provided support for - now get this - 107 wars in which the United States has been involved. Our freedom is very important, and let me say thanks to all our veterans down over the years.  ATTENTION KIWANIS MEMBERS AND FRIENDS.
 November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, we are beginning to focus on ringing the bell and filling the Red Bucket for Salvation Army. We are going to need as many ringers as we can. Gary Strunk and Doug Balkman are heading this up and they are going to need your help. Everytime there is a vacancy, they have to fill in, so PLEASE!!! Sign up for one or more dates. Our club is responsible for Hobby Lobby. While you are inside, you do not ring the bell, but if you choose to go outside, ring all you want to. NOTE: It is so easy to sign up. Just get on the computer, and type in www.fumc.org, then in the upper right hand side of the home page, you will see the phrase "HELP RING SALVATION ARMY BELL", click on that and follow instruction. Remember all the good does through Salvation Army. Don't leave yourself out...Help us! We need you very much. |

 THANKS TO ANDREW GARY FOR BRINGING A WONDERFUL PROGRAM LAST THURSDAY.
Clay DeStefano, executive director of the Price Center gave a very encouraging program with regards to his recent taking over the running of the Price Center, located on San Antonio Street. The Price Center has been around a long time, originally it was the First Christian Church, and after many transforming changes, it holds many surprises and activities for the general public. Clay told us that the Price Center was going to be used quite a bit more than it has in the past, offering a variety of programs, activities, musicals, dramas, dance classes. Beginning November 30, the Center will be open 9-5 daily for free tours of the beautifully decorated facility. A variety of Christmas trees, including a 14' beauty, a number of handmade ornaments, wonderful and unique floral displays as well as mini-themed collections.
Each of the Center's unique venues is open and available to rent for your family, organization or businesses holiday gathering.
From Monday, November 30 to Thursday, Dec 17, daily - "People's Choice Christmas Stocking Contest. Vote for your favorite Christmas stocking created by the Bee Friends Quilters.
Friday, December 11 - "A Cabaret Christmas". Enjoy an evening of Christmas music, dance and comedy to ring in the Christmas season (7:30pm)
Saturday, December 12, there will be a Christmas Laser Show, presented by award-winning local laser expert, Tim Walsh. On Sunday, Dec 13, the Center will offer a Christmas Concert Recital.  WORST PUNISHMENT?
"An Air Force cargo plane was preparing for departure from Thule Air Base in Greenland. They were waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the aircraft's sewage holding tank.
The aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late in arriving and the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank pumped out.
When the commander berated the Airman for his slowness and promised punishment, the Airman responded, 'Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below zero, I have a bang on my head, I'm stationed in Greenland, a dog ran off with my coat, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes. Just what are you going to do to punish me?'"

 THANKSGIVING INTERCLUB INVITATION.
Glen Rydl, our interclub chairman is extending an invitation for a Thanksgiving Interclub from the Marble Falls Kiwanis Club. This is an annual event, and in the past, we have had several members from our club and other clubs drive there and help celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey and all the trimmings. It will be on Tuesday, November 24 at 11:00am. This means we will have to leave about 9:15-9:30 to get there in time. If you are interested in going, contact Glen and let him know if you are interested. It probably will cost about $11.00, Interclubs is a great way of knowing what the other clubs are doing. If you don't make this one, plan on making several other interclubs sometime this year.

November 13, 1927.........The Holland Tunnel was opened to traffic. The tunnel runs under the Hudson River between New York City and Jersey City and was the first underwater tunnel built in the U.S. It is comprised of two tubes, each large enough for two lanes of traffic.
November 14, 1889..........Newspaper reporter Nellie Bly set out from New York to beat the record of Jules Verne's imaginary hero, Phineas Fogg, who traveled around world in 80 days. Bly (pen name for Elizabeth Cochrane) returned 72 days later to a tumultuous welcome in New York.
