Hurrah!!!!! We had a winner last week for Big Bucks. Our club Secretary Glen Rydl walked away with having had his name drawn and won. He kept it.

Last Week's Program
The time just flew by last Thursday when Judge David Glickler, Judge of County Court-at-Law #2, gave us a very thorough rundown on Veterans Court here in San Marcos. County Court-at-Law #2 deals with all sorts of hearings - Criminal Misdemeanors, Civil lawsuits under $200,000, Mental Health cases, Probates, Guardianship Hearings, Juvenile Cases, Extradition Waivers, Family Law cases, Eviction Appeals etc.
He dealt primarily with work that he does in Veteran's Treatment Court, which is a Specialty Court/Diversion Program intended to identify veteran offenders, to assist through the court system, to help veterans achieve mental stability and non-criminal behavior, help them to reduce repeated offenses.
His presentation was both informative and gave much indication to our club that veterans did have some unique problems, based on the lifestyle that veterans are called upon to undertake during their term of service, both in peacetime and in combat situations.
You could tell that Judge Glickler was very sympathetic with veteran's unique problems, both while in service and after being discharged, and his heart and soul were very much concerned with getting the veteran back on the road to personal stability. Thanks Beverly Crumley for arranging for Judge Glickler to come speak to us. For those of us who are veterans, it was good to know that there is a strong program of rehabilitation available for veterans whose behavior have caused physical and mental breakdown because of their military lifestyle.

Garry White will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday's meeting. She isStephanye Almaguer, Volunteer Coordinator for Boysville, located in Converse, Texas.
Boysville"s Mission Statement is to Provide a safe family environment for children in need so they may become responsible adults.
The children that come to Boysville come from homes that are in crisis, due to emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Sometimes a parent cannot take care of the child due to a terminal illness and do not have the support of family to take care of the children. Children who come to Boysville come from various backgrounds. Boysville does not look at the child's past....they look at their future. By providing food, shelter, clothing and medical services, Boysville is able to provide the basic necessities needed to make the child feel safe and comfortable. With Boysville's educational services, the children realize their potential. They are encouraged to seek future education, and explore college, trade or military options. Boysville pulls children out of abuse cycles and teaches them to become an active part of society.
Week August 25 - August 31st
August 25, 1985 - - Samantha Smith died in an airplane crash in Maine. In 1982, the 13 year old American schoolgirl had written a letter to Soviet Russia's leader Yuri Andropov asking, 'Why do you want to conquer the whole world, or at least our country?' To her surprise, Andropov replied personally to her and offered an all-expense paid trip to the USSR. She toured Russia for two weeks amid worldwide publicity and came to symbolize American and Russian hopes for peaceful co-existence.
August 26, 1886 - - One of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in recorded history occurred on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa. Explosions were heard 2,000 miles away. Tidal waves 120 ft. high killed 36,000 persons on nearby islands, while five cubic miles of earth were blasted into the air up to a height of 50 miles.
August 27, 1910 - - Mother Teresa was born (as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxiu) in Skopje, Yugoslavia. She founded a religious order of nuns in Calcutta, India called the Missionaries of Charity and spent her life working to help the poor and sick of India.
August 28, 1963 - - The March on Washington occurred as over 250,000 persons attended a Civil Rights rally in Washington, D.C., at which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King made his now-famous I have a Dream speech.
August 29, 1792 - - In one of the worst maritime disasters, 900 men on the British battleship, Royal George. As the ship was being repaired, a gust of wind allowed water flood into open gun ports. The ship sank within minutes.
August 30, 1901 - - Frankenstein author Mary Shelley was born in London.
August 31, 1997 - - Britain's Princess Diana died at age 36 from massive internal injuries suffered in a high-speed car crash, reportedly after being pursued by photographers. The crash occurred shortly after midnight in Paris inside a tunnel along the Seine River at the Pont de l'Alma bridge, less than a half mile north of the Eiffel Tower. Also killed in the crash were Diana's companion, Dodi Fayed, 42, and chauffeur Henri Paul. A fourth person in the car, bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, was seriously injured.

Weasel Words!
Slaps on the wrist; words that weaken or detract from the effectiveness or force of another word or expression. The expression is often erroneously accredited to Theodore Roosevelt. He did use it and define it, however, in a speech at St. Louis, May 31, 1916. Roosevelt, along with many others, thought that action, rather than chidings, should be taken by the Wilson administration for the depredations by the German navy on American shipping. He said the notes from the Department of State were filled with 'weasel words,' adding, 'When a weasel sucks eggs the meat is sucked out of the egg.' If you use a 'weasel word' after another there is nothing left of the other.' But the expression first appeared in an article, 'The Stained-Glass Political Platform,' by Stewart Chaplin, in the June, 1900, issue of Century Magazine. In the course of the dialogue in which the article is written, one St. John, reading the 'platform' aloud, quoted, 'The public should be protected - - ' 'Duly protected' said Gamage. 'That's always a good weasel word.'"

A dog was ambling down the street and saw the sign. He looked at it for a moment, pulled it down with his mouth and walked into the manager's office, making it clear he wished to apply for the job
The office manager laughed and said, 'I can't hire a dog for this job.' The dog pointed to the line: 'An equal opportunity employer'.
So the manager said, 'OK, take this letter and type it.' The dog went off to the word processor and returned a minute later with the finished letter, perfectly formatted.
So the manager said, 'Alright, here's a problem. Write a computer program for it and run it'. Fifteen minutes later, the dog came back with the correct answer.
The manager still wasn't convinced. 'I still can't hire you for this position. You've got to be bilingual.'

The Soviet Union's Venera 3 was the first man-made craft to land on Venus in 1966.
10.........At one point it was thought Venus might be a tropical paradise. The dense clouds of sulphuric acid surrounding Venus make it impossible to view its surface from outside its atmosphere. It was only when radio mapping was developed in the 1960's that scientists were able to observe and measure the extreme temperatures and hostile environment. It is thought Venus did once have oceans but these evaporated as the planets temperature increased
