The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading.
After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes, the teacher asked, "Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude....? After a long confused silence, a voice volunteered, "I guess you'd be eating alone."
Our program last Thursday was a very informational one. Dr. Stuart Shapiro, Board Certified Orthopaedic surgeon with the Live Oaks Health Partners brought very important information regarding Hip Replacement as well as shoulder and knee reconstruction. He has been inpractice since 2003. He became a Texan in 2007. He treats a variety of orthopedic problems in patients of all ages. He performs advanced arthroscopic procedures on shoulders and knees, fracture care, arthriitis care, rotator cuff repairs, joint replacements, sprain and strain treatments, sports and athletic injuries and overuse syndromes. He believes in compassionate care and offers surgical and nonsurgical options. Members who were present were: Moe, Glen, Lon, McBride,Andrew,Gary Strunk, Gary Nelson, Tracy, Kelli, Doug Balkman, Charles, John Polk, Del, Chester, Pam, Randy, Frederick, David, Sam, Ted, and Del.
Remember November 8th, is our annual Veteran's Day Parade. A lot of you have signed up to help with this, we've done it in the past, and we know just how important this event is to our Veterans and to our kids. We are going to need your help from beginning to end. brochures have been made up to hand out to the children in school, we will need to help them decorate their bikes by the courthouse on the day of the parade. Let's have a great turnout for this, and be sure and wear your tee shirt from last year. NOW! We will put the frame work on the float and assemble the float itself onFriday morning, November 7th, around 9:00am at the Warehouse on Staples Road. The tractor and float will then go to Ted'sBreihan's Electric shop and remain overnight there. Saturday morning, November 8th, gather at Ted's Place and finish decorating the float. We will need volunteers to help decorate the bikes too. Academy has donated two new bikes to be drawn at the conclusion of parade. We also will be giving all of the kids riding with us a donated token from WhataBurger, so none of the kids should feel left out. We need persons to ride the float and we need people to walk behind with the Kid's Brigade. Thanks, remember what we are celebrating, the veterans and this great country that we live in. Don't forget that we need to put out flags on Election Day, November 4th. Everyone needs to be at Ted's by 7am ready to get your flags for your route. We are so appreciative for all of you who are willing to do this mission of Kiwanis. It is all done in the spirit of teamwork and the spirit of patriotism for our city, our state, and our nation. Flags need to be picked up between 4:30 and 5:00pm.
Another reminder, that on the morning of the 8th, Saturday, be at Ted's to not only decorate the float and bicycles, but also we will need
about 6 volunteers to put up flags just around the square. We can get all of that done around 8am (instead of 7am), it shouldn't take too long. While the flags are being put up, the rest of us can be decorating the float. Then on Tuesday, November 11 (Veteran's Day), we will meet at the regular time of 7am to put up our regular route of flags.
K-Kids Information. Let's have a great turnout on Thursday, November 20th, when Randy & Pam will bring the K-Kids as our program. Along with them will be several K-Kids, along with Kayla Cook, the faculty Advisor, and the School principal, Mr. Maresch. Also there may be two other advisors as well. The K-Kids program is a very important one from De-Zavala school, and we need to get more involved with them. There are plenty of good service projects out there, but we as Kiwanians should take more of an interest in what they are doing. We need to attend some of their meetings , which are being planned for the first & third Wenesdaymorning from 7:30-8:00 am. We should try and
DeZavala School is inviting all of our Kiwanis Members to attend their induction ceremony for K-Kids. This is one ceremony
that everyone, if possible turn out for these kids. It will be on Friday afternoon, November 7 at 2:00 pm. It will be held in the school cafeteria, but everyone must sign in at the office before going to the cafeteria. It is also a good time to plug the Kids Brigade the following day, to ride in the Kid's Brigade.
The winner for Big Bucks last Thursday was John Polk....$8.00....He had his pin etc, so he won! He turned around and gave it to the Elimiinate project. Thanks John!
Just want to remind the members of our Board of Directors, that we will be meeting on Thursday, November 20th, at 5pm, at CTMC. We will meet either in the large conference room or the small one.
