Last Week's Program
Last week's program was most unique when Joanna Gilland brought Matt Patterson from Farmers Insurance, but his program was not about insurance, but rather about adoption.
He and his wife have 3 children, but have taken on a most personal and heartbreaking, as well as heartwarming endeavor, an endeavor that Matt says God laid upon his heart - and that was to adopt children that no one else wanted. He has been doing this now as an answer to what he feels has been placed in his life. He told about building a huge house, larger than perhaps was necessary, but he kept adding on and then he knew why!
He said that there are close to 171,000,000 children that need to be adopted all over the world, and he has travelled to some of these countries and have adopted quite a number of children. His efforts have have some rather heartbreaking events that would go along with adopting these children, but he never gave up. It was a very humbling story, but inspirational at the same time. Thank you Matt and thank you Joanna for bringing him.
Francis Mendez was the lucky winner of Big Bucks this week, but he wasn't wearing his pin, so that money stays in the jar. Sorry Francis!
Donation Given to Salvation Army
Last Thursday, August 9th, President Doug presented Gary Strunk, a member of the club, but also works alongside Salvation Army, a check for $1371 to be given to Salvation Army by our club for the purpose of giving aid to those individuals who were devastated by the recent Iconic Village Apartment fire, in which 5 Texas State University student lost their lives, and a great number who have lost all of their clothes, furniture and personal belongings in the most tragic disaster the University has ever faced.
Frederick Case Receives Special Award
Last Thursday at our club's regular meeting, John Clifford, Region 10 Trustee, honored Frederick Case with a special award, given by the Texas/Oklahoma District of Kiwanis. It was a glass plaque honoring Frederick for all the hard work that he has diligently exercised in the interest of various enterprises within Kiwanis. Frederick is recognized for all of the tasks that he has undertaken and has given time and effort in getting these tasks done. Congratulations Frederick!
Comments from TX/Ok 208 District Convention
Randy and Pam Cook were the two delegates from our club that attended this year's District Convention in Abilene, TX. Here are a few observations which they brought back from the convention.
1. There are 200,867 Kiwanis members worldwide in all Kiwanis districts. We increased by 10,895 members. The largest district is Taiwan.
2. Texas/Oklahoma District is the second largest with 6,863 members. We had an increase of 163 members. Division 2 had the largest increase, due to two new clubs that were formed. Division 8 had an increase of 34 members. All clubs with 5+ members were recognized. Our club only had 4 new members.
3. This is VERY IMPORTANT. The three readings of next year's officers is to be done in May, orally at club meetings, and then voted on the day of the third reading by the club. The li9st of next year's officers is to be put on the T-O website by June 1, probably only President, President-Elect, Secretary and Treasurer. The Board members are handled internally within the club. It was reported that as of 8/4/18, 80 clubs had not posted their officer list on the T.O. Website.
4. There were only 350 or 360 delegates who attended the convention. That is a significant drop, even though it was the 100th Anniversary of T-O.
5. The 2019 International Convention will be June 27-30 at Disney World in Orlando. The 2019 T-O Convention will be August 1-3 in Denton, at a brand new Embassy Suite. The room rate will be $124 and there is free parking.
Butter Braid Pastries Fundraiser
Several order blanks from persons who have gotten orders from people for our recent Fundraiser . . Butter Braid Pastries and Cookies. Rhonda White is heading this up and she suggests that those picking up orders should bring ice freezers, because the food will be frozen. Don't forget the freezers this coming Thursday, August 16th.

We will be having committee meetings this coming Thursday, August 16, and also members of the Kyle/Buda Kiwanis club will be our guests as they spend a few minutes telling us about their up coming fundraiser - The Pie in the Sky Tethered Balloon Rides". Let's have a great turnout for our 'soon to be' our new club to the north.

August 10, 1874 - - Herbert Hoover, the 31st US President was born in West Branch Iowa. He was the first President born west of the Mississippi.
August 11, 1841 - - Frederick Douglasss, an escaped slave, spoke before an au9dience in the North for the first time. During an anti-slavery convention on Nantuckett Island, he gave a powerful emotional account of his life as a slave. He was immediately asked to become a full-time lecturer for the Massachusetts Antislavery Society.
August 12, 1676 - - King Philip's War ended with the assassination of Metacom, leader of the Pokanokets, a tribe within the Wampanoag Indian Federation. Nicknamed "King Philip" by colonists, he led a Native SAmerican uprising against white settlers which resulted in a war that raged for nearly two years, now known as King Philip's War.
August 13, 1961 - - The Berlin Wall came into existence after the East German government closed the border between east and west sectors of Berlin with barbed wire to discourage emigration to the West. The barbed wire was replaced by a 12 foot high concrete wall eventually extending 103 miles around the perimeter of West Berlin. The wall included electrified fences, fortification and guard posts. It became a notorious symbol of the Cold War. Presidents Kennedy and Reagan made notable appearances at the wall accompanied by speeches denouncing Communism. The wall was finally opened by an East German governmental decree in November 1989 and torn down by the end of 1990.
August 14, 1935 - - President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act establishing the system which guarantees pensions to those who retire at age 65. The Social Security system also aids states in providing financial aid to dependent children, the blind and others, as well as administering a system of unemployment insurance.
August 15, 1969 - - Woodstock began in a field near Yasgur's Farm at Bethel, New York. The three-day concert featured 24 rock bands and drew a crowd of more than 300,000 young people. The event came to symbolize the counter-culture movement of the 1960's.
August 16, 1777 - - During the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Bennington, Vermont, occurred as militiamen from Vermont, aided by Massachusetts troops, wiped oust a detachment of 800 German-Hessians sent by British Burgoyne to seize horses.
