Another New Member Joins Our Club
Two new members in two weeks. Wow! Last Thursday, President Doug and John Polk inducted into our club,Joanna Gilland. She is coming from Kyle, TX and is quite familiar with Kiwanis Club. Randy Cook (R) is her sponsor. Joanna will be a tremendous addition to our club, and is very anxious to get right to work. Our club welcomed Joanna with it's usual 'style', and that made her feel right at home.

"We All Can Use Prayers throughout Our Lifetime!
Keep Glen & Marylou Rydl in our prayers. Keep Ted & Francis in our prayers, although Ted is not let his recent surgery keep him down. He is up, feeling good, and is back doing his usual routine, though a bit slower. Keep Rob Martin in our prayers following his recent surgery. He is at home recuperating slowly, however just recently Rob found out that there is a possibility that infection has set in following his recent back surgery. He will know something this week. Also, continue to keep John Polk in our prayers.
Program for this coming Thursday
Our program for this Thursday will be Committee meetings. Those that have been selected for this week is 'Membership Growth' (Moe Johnson, Chr); 'Webpage & Public Relations' (Lon Shell, Chairman) and 'New Fundraiser Committee' (Doug Balkman, chairman)
Email has gone out from Doug, announcing who is on which committee, so let's have a great turnout for this program.
Displaying the Flag on Flag Day, United States
We all are reminded that we are to put out flags this coming Thursday, June 14th. It is Flag Day in our United States - a time when our nation reflect on the foundations of our nation's freedom. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country's ideals since its early days. During this period of time, Americans are called upon to remember their loyalty to the nation, reaffirm their belief in liberty and justice and observe the nation's unity.
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red & white stripes - one for each state. Although it is not certain, this flag may have been made by the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy. Those who are putting up flags in our city be sure and meet at 7am on Thursday morning at Ted's place. Be sure and get them picked up again between 4:30 and 5:00pm.

June 8, 1874 - - Apache leader Cochise died on the Chiricahua Reservation in southeastern Arizona. After a peace treaty had been broken by the U.S. Army in 1861, he waged war against settlers and soildiers, forcing them to withdraw from southern Arizona. In 1862, he became princiapal chief of the Apaches. He and 200 followers avoided capture by hiding in the Dragoon Mountains. In June of 1871, Army General George Crook assumed command in Arizona and managed to win the allegiance of many Apaches. Cochise then surrendered. He disappeared briefly in the spring of 1872, but returned and settled on the reservation where he died!
June 9, 1898 - - The British signed a 99 year lease for Hong Kong, located on the southeastern coast of China. Hong Kong, consisting of an area measuring 400 square miles, was administered as a British Crown Colony until July 1, 1997, when its sovereignty reverted to the People's Republic of China.
June 10, 1652 - - In Massachusetts, silversmith John Hull opened the first mint in America, in defiance of English colonial law. The first coin issued was the Pine Tree Shilling, designed by Hull.
June 11, 1991 - - Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted, spewing ash into the air, visible over 60 miles. The surrounding areas were covered with ash and mud created by rainstorms. Nearby U.S. Military bases were also damaged!
June 12, 1898 - - The Philippines declared their independence from Spain. The islands were named after King Philip II. Once freed from Spain, the islands were then invaded and occupied by U.S. forces. They became an American colony and remained so until after World War II.
June 13, 1971 - - The New York Times began publishing the Pentagon Papers, a collection of top secret documents exposing U.S. strategy in the Vietnam War.
June 14, 1775 - - The first U.S. Military service, the Continental Army, consisting of six companies of riflemen, was established by the Second Continental Congress. The next day, George Washington was appointed by a unanimous vote to command the army.
