Oh well, there was only $2.00 in the jar this past Thursday, but Kelli Whigham's name was drawn and she was not present. Oh me, Oh my, when is my name going to come up. Hey, you can't win if you are not there. I'm there, but my name still doesn't come up. Oh well, I'm a good loser.
Now here is a pastime recreation that will really give you much pleasure.
Francis Mendez did a super job in lining up Dr. David Wierschem, Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems at Texas State, for our main program last Thursday. But he didn't talk at all about what he does at the University, but what he does in his spare time to relax him and provides gobs of therapy time. He is a woodworker. When he started, he didn't know the first thing about woodworking, especially with the exotic woods, but he learned, bought tools and equipment, i.e. table saw, planer, band saw, drill press, lathe and all sorts of tools to use on these pieces of equipment. He makes pens on his lathe, as well as this very beautiful star that you see in the picture. Being a woodworker myself, only with the scroll saw, I agree 100% that it gives you great pleasure to turn out something and feel that you have accomplished some things that others can appreciate. Way to go, David and Francis. Thank you so much.
(Oh by the way, the club had a drawing for one of David's pieces and Frederick Case got a beautiful shaped bottle stopper).
Our Program for this coming Thursday, June 2, 2016
McBride Wilson will be bringing the program this coming Thursday. Cpl. Scott Johnson of the San Marcos Police Department will be bringing a program centering around the Polygraphing or Lie Detection process.
A polygraph machine records the body's involuntary responses to an examiner's questions in order to ascertain deceptive behavior. The test measures physiological data from three or more systems of the human body - generally the respiratory, cardiovascular, and sweat gland systems - but not the voice.
"Polygraph" means literally "many writings," referring to the method of recording several physiological activities at the same time. Let's have a good turnout for Cpl Johnson. REMEMBER, WE WILL ARRIVE AT GRINS BY 11:30AM THIS WEEK AND WE WILL GET OUT EARLIER.
Francis Mendez is Kiwanian of the Month
President Moe Johnson presents Francis Mendez with a beautiful T-Shirt and declared that he was 'Kiwanian of the Month". Francis, a professor of computer systems at Texas State is also chairman of our Club Scholarship Committee. It is a committee that must go through volumes of applications from High School students have submitted to apply for scholarships when they graduate from High School. Francis with other members of his committee read over about 50 applications before choosing five from the entire lot, and awarded 5 $1000 scholarships to those 5 individuals. These individuals have come to our club meeting and gave the club a synopsis of what they plan to do after they leave high school. Thanks Francis and Congratulations.
An unexpected surprise was given to our club by Gary Strunk, a member of our club, but also is a volunteer worker over at our local Salvation Army. Last Thursday, Gary presented our president Moe Johnson with a plaque thanking all of our members for volunteering in last Christmas's bell ringing, in which several of our members volunteered several times to help out with this very important fundraiser for the Salvation Army.
SMHS Kiwanis Club Scholarship recipient comes to our meeting
Sarah Mock, the fifth recipient of this year's $1,000 scholarship was not able to be at our meeting when the other four recipients came, so Sarah was able to come this last meeting and thanked the club for the scholarship and some of the things that she is going to do when she goes on to further her education. She is planning on going to Trinity University. We wish Sarah and the other four young people God's speed and a good future.
Remember that Monday, May 30th is Memorial Day, and we begin a new year of displaying flags on the businesses that have signed up. Be at Ted's place by 7am on Monday, to put up the flags and take them down between 4:30-5:30pm. Randy has handed out the new routes and should be in the hands of those members who are putting flags up.

What Frogs might Do!
"I went fishing one morning, but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed it right behind the head, took the frog out of his mouth and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without an incident and carried on fishing using the frog.
A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth."

Pancake Supper to raise money for 'School Fuel'
Last Thursday afternoon, several Kiwanis members and First United Methodist Men, volunteered some type flipping pancakes over at the San Marcos First Baptist Church. The church was having this pancake supper and silent auction in order to raise money for the 'School Fuel' program that provides weekend meals for children in our schools that might not otherwise have a meal. There was a great comradery between the two churches and our club, as our club has been involved with helping out this much needed program, as well as a similar program in the United Methodist Church called 'Meals to Grow'.
Those from our club who helped out were Gary Strunk, Del Brown, Lon Shell and Frederick Case. Those from the United Methodist Men's group was Bill Nicolas, Bob Goss and Dennis Phillips.
What is Significant About the Number 24?
1............If you had a box of 24 gerbils, you could share them out equally among either 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,or 24 people. These numbers are the factors of 24. It is the smallest number to have eight different factors.
