Flag Display on Monday, February 19, 2018
It is Flag Day again. Those who have routes meet at Ted's place by 7am next Monday, the 19th. This special day celebrates not just George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but also it is now widely known as President's Day to honor the incumbent president and all persons who have served as president, not just George Washington or Lincoln. The day is a state holiday in most states. Thanks to all of you who are involved in this patriotic act.
Circle K gets started....They are on a Roll!
Yes, that is correct. Texas State University is on the roll in getting a Circle K Club going!
Last Saturday, John Polk, Rob Martin and Del Brown went over to TSU and met in the LBJ Building with about 14 students interested in starting a CKI in the university. Erick Garza who has been attending our Kiwanis meeting is the student representative of the new club. There were 14 young men & women attending the 2018 Hill Country Spring Rally at TSU. Hannah Vargheso, Lt Gov of CKI at University of University of Texas presided over this delegation. John Polk officially certified the election of 8 delegates at TSU. A new Lt Governor was elected unanimously by the 8 delegates and had her sworn in at this meeting. Her name is Viana Phan, and she has quite a history of Kiwanis , and some wonderful ideas of how to get the new fledgling club going at TSU.
All in all, those gathered at this meeting was very enthusiastic about getting a club going, so here we go!
Our Program from Last Week - April 8, 2018
I want to ask a very simple question as editor of our bulletin...what better program could be given than one that Andrew Gary gave last week. Now I know that we have members if our club that go way back in history and could remember many of the things that Andrew brought to our minds...I'm not one of them, since I've only been in the club for 5 years....but here's a man (Andrew) that has been in the club for about 26 or 27 years, having won the prestigious Award of Honor a couple of years ago, and has kept a running history of what our club was involved in way back yonder!
It truly was a thrill to hear what our club was involved in back then, and to see how the club reacted as they too remembered 'those good old days'.
Andrew has quite a few documents, minutes, etc from the past & 'I don't believe anyone was ready for him to quit at 1:00 . He could have gone on and on and on. It was wonderful! Thanks Andrew and thanks to Charles Johnson who sat with Andrew at the head table and filled in some of the gaps along the way! Thanks Gary!
The Program for this Coming Thursday, February 15th.....
This coming Thursday, everyone that can should try and be at the noon meeting. Our President will be laying out details for our Annual Pancake Day & Silent Auction. Remember, everyone needs to be there, ready to work. It's not fair to let just the stalwart regulars to bear all of the load, so our President will be giving very important details about this event. And sell your tickets! Look for the new banner by the Activity Center...Remind people and plan on bidding on the auction items. It's going to be a great event. Let's make it the best event ever!

February 9, 1943 - - During World War II in the Pacific, U.S. Troops captured Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands after six month of battle, with 9,000 Japanese and 2,000 Americans killed.
February 10, 1942 - - The first Medal of Honor during World War II was awarded to 2nd Lt Alexander Nininger (posthumously) for heroism during the Battle of Bataan.

February 12, 1999 - - The impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in the U.S. Senate ended. With the whole world watching via television, Senators stood up one by one during the final roll call to vote 'guilty' or 'not guilty' On Article 1 (charging Clinton with perjury 55 senators, including 10 Republicans and all 45 Democrats voted not guilty. On Article 2 (charging Clinton with obstruction of justice) the Senate split evenly, 50 for and 50 against the President. With the necessary two-thirds majority not having been achieved, President Clinton was thus acquitted on both charges and served out the remainder of his term of office lasting through January 20, 2001.
February 13, 1635 - - Boston Latin School, the first tax payer supported (public) school in America was established in Boston, Massachusetts.
February 14, 1849 - - Photographer Matthew Brady took the first photograph of a U.S. President in office, James Polk.
February 15, 1898 - - In Havana, the U.S. Battleship Maine was blown up while at anchor and quickly sank with 260 crew members lost. The incident inflamed public opinion in the U.S. resulting in a declaration of war against Spain on April 25, 1898, amid the cries of "Remember the Maine"

A motorist accidentally hit and killed a calf that was crossing the road. Feeling guilty about the incident, he asked the farmer how much the animal was worth. "Well" said the farmer, "About $300 today, but in six years it would have been worth $900. So realistically I'm $900 out of pocket. That's what I want as compensation."
The motorist wrote out a cheque and handed it to the farmer. "Here is the cheque for $900." he said. It is postdated six years from today."
"Rigmarole"
Edward I of England forced all noblemen to sign their allegiance to him. This list of those that did was called a 'ragman's roll." Once the list was done, couriers were sent all over to publicly read this list. Well, doing this over and over was a bit tiring. So, at times the speech probably got muffled and hard to understand by those listening. So, the incoherency of hearing this list was called "the ragman's roll" which slurred turned into "rigmarole." And, the word eventually got used in society to mean a slurring of a lot of words that couldn't be understood, whether a list or just speech.

(No! The gloss on a table is called a finish, since it's the last thing you do, so once you apply the gloss, you have finished. So refinishing is the correct way to say it, it has already been finished, you are doing it again!)

(First of all, it should read "Why is Major League Baseball's championship called...." "Secondly, and more importantly, it is not only played in the U.S., so the whole thing is invalid. America the Beautiful - "Blanchard Springs Caverns, Arkansas"
Blanchard Springs Caverns is a cave system located in the Ozark-St Francis National Forest in Stone County in northern Arkansas, 2 miles off Highway 14, a short distance north of Mountain View. It is the only tourist cave owned by the United States Forest Service and the only one owned by the Federal government outside the National Park System.
Blanchard Springs is a three-level cave system, all of which can be viewed on guided tours. The Dripstone Trail runs through the uppermost level of caverns for about a half-mile and opened in 1973. The Discovery Trail opened in 1977 and loops through a 1.2 mile section of the cavern, descending to the lower level of the cave, 366 feet underground, as well as to the Natural Entrance, about 100 feet below ground at that point, following the stream bed of the springs that created the cavern. This trail includes the Rimstone Dams, which create pools along the stream bed, and the Ghost Room, a small but very well decorated room in the uppermost level, with its huge white flowstone.
