San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, April 24, 2025
We had unofficial member Chase Dame as a guest again. He helped Lon with maintenance on the camp last week.
Although I rarely report the Big Bucks winner, Felicia won for the second week in a row. That is extremely rare. Congratulations!

REPORTS:
Rick reported that Flag Program collections are at almost 50%. Cheryl was able to successfully collect from several sponsors of the program.

Jesse asked for more volunteers to help with the Cornhole Tournament. At least 8 members raised their hands at the meeting. He has others lined up also so there are probably 20 volunteers to help with 10:00 a.m. set up and sign up. There are approximately 11 teams signed up with more to come. He needs the number of total teams soon so a competition board can be set up ahead of time.
Hamburgers, chips, water, sodas and beer will be availabe to purchase.

Kristin noted the San Marcos Heritage Home Tour is on May 3rd. from 10:00 - 4:00. There will be a bake sale and tickets for the tour available at Cock House Museum on 400 E. Hopkins St. Purchase tickets early and online. Show your ticket purchase at the Cock House and you will be given a
map and booklet that serves as your ticket. Kristin is providing some homebaked bread for the bake sale.

The San Marcos Public Library will be doing a presentation on May 15th concerning the Summer Reading Program. This is one of our annual donations not only of funds but also volunteering on the kickoff day of their Summer Program. It is great fun so do consider helping out.

Rick asks that if you still owe the second half of your dues for the year, please pay them as soon as possible.

PROGRAM:
Jerilyn Miller, Foundation Director for Christus Santa Rosa San Marcos Foundation, gave us a great overview of the history and current medical areas the hospital offers our community. She has been with the Hospital Foundation for 17 years. The hospital has been serving the community for 102 years having been established in 1923 as a Memorial for all servicemen in WW1. It was then known as the Hays County Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines Memorial Hospital.

The Board of Directors represent many organizations and businesses. An important part of the Foundation is philanthropy. They need to raise funds to keep up with rising costs of equipment, such as for robotic surgery which reduces recovery time for patients. Once a year they host the "Stars of Texas" Gala to honor someone in the community and to raise funds to purchase equipment.

For the past four years the hospital has been voted Best Hospital and Best Emergency Department in Hays County by the San Marcos Daily Record Best of Hays. That is quite an accomplishment.

Their focus is to keep San Marcus residents in San Marcos for care. They offer Primary, Urgent and Virtual care. One special program is the "Every Baby Matters Mission" in which they do followup home visitation for mothers and their babies who are born at the hospital. By doing this, they can take care of any problems that might come up for both the mother and the baby.

This was an excellent program for informing the club on how many ways medical help can be reached within our own community.

Humor and Musings,
Corny cornhole humor:

“I can’t believe you’re so good at cornhole, you must have a-maize-ing skills!”

Why was the cornhole player so confident? They had “corn-fi-dance” in their skills.

What do cornhole players do when they win a game? They have a “hole” lot of high-fives!

If you think these are bad, you should see the ones I rejected.
