Our Program from Last Thursday...
Our program, brought by Del Brown was such a successful one based on several factors. Not only did we have Denise Blok, General Manager for Hays County Food Bank, but we also had several guests, and our members also brought quite a few food supplies for Denise to take back with them. Denise's presentation was quite thorough, complete with approximately how many families are helped with food assistance, and yet more and more subsidies keeps coming in, which makes keeping the shelves pretty well filled. The Food Bank, which currently is on Hernden Street, will be moving to a new location which will be breaking ground shortly. The new location will be on the east side of Hunter, off of Riemer Street.
In addition to the presentation by Denise, our club presented her with our club's annual donation of $300.
Our Program for Thursday, November 30th.....Gary Nelson & Del Brown
Our program for November 30th (there's no meeting this coming Thursday due to Thanksgiving) will be Deputy Stephen Traeger from the Hay's County Sheriff's office who will be letting us all know about the Hays County Sheriff's Office Citizen's Sheriff's Academy. This program includes 13 weeks of instruction by the Sheriff's office. The next program will be starting in February.
The primary objective of the academy is to build a better understanding between citizen's and what our Sheriff Department does within our city and county. More information about this will be given in next week's Bulletin.

Is It Almost Christmas Time Already...You bet it is, and that means that we are looking for volunteers to ring bells at Hobby Lobby. If you have done it before, you know the joy that comes from greeting people, thanking them for their donation, and handing out candy to the children. There are still spots on our calendar. "Christmas Interclub!
'Ho, Ho, Ho! You bet that season is coming up and will soon be on us! That means, among other things that our club is extending an invitation out to our other Division clubs to join us for our Christmas Interclub. It will be held this year over at Mamacita's on December 7th. The time will be verified in next week's bulletin. Be sure and give John Polk an accurate count of who is going and if you are bringing your significant other. It will be a joyous occasion, as all Christmas's should be. Put it on your calendar!

November 17, 1588 - - Queen Elizabeth I ascended the throne of England at the age of 25, reigning until 1603 when she was 69. Under her leadership, England became a world power, defeating the Spanish Armada, and witnessed a golden age of literature featuring works by William Shakespeare, Edmund Spencer and others.
November 18, 1916 - - During World War I, Allied General Douglas Haig called off the First Battle of the Somme after five months. The Allies had advanced 125 square miles at a cost of 420,000 British and 195,000 French soldiers. German losses were over 65,000 men.
November 19, 1703 - - The "Man in the Iron Mask," a prisoner of Louis XIV in the Bastille prison in Paris, died. The prisoner may have been Count Matthioli, who had double-crossed Louis XIV, or may have even been the brother of Louis XIV. His true identity has been the cause of much intrigue, and was celebrated in literary works such as Alexander Fumans' The Viscount Bragelonne.
November 20, 1910 - - Francisco Madero launched the social revolution in Mexico, exposing Mexico's political dictatorship and called for honest elections. Dubbed the "Apostle of Democracy", he was elected president in 1911, but was hampered by a lack of practical political experience. He was ousted by a military revolt in 1913, and was then assassinated while in police custody.
November 21, 1783 - - The first free balloon flight took place in Paris as Jean Francois Pilatre de Rozier and Marquis Francois Laurent d'Arlandes ascended in a Montgolfier hot air balloon. Their flight lasted about 25 minutes and carried them nearly six miles at a height of about 300 feet over Paris. Benjamin Franklin was one of the spectators.
November 22, 1935 - - Trans-Pacific airmail service began as the China Clipper, a Pan American flying boat, took off from San Francisco, reaching the Philippines 59 hours later. The following year, commercial passenger service began.
November 23, 1890 - - Ten-year old Princess Wilhelmina became Queen of the Netherlands upon the death of her Father William III. Her mother Queen Emma acted as Regent until 1898.

"To Ride for a fall!"
"To lose intentionally; also, to fail in an enterprise. Obviously the saying stems from horse racing. especially in a steeplechase, in which a rider, though on a favorite mount, deliberately rides in such manner as to disqualify himself by, apparently, being thrown from his horse. The expression ---recent American ---- has been transferred to other contests and games in which one of the contestants or contesting sides deliberately, but very slyly, loses the contest. However, the expression has also been employed in a sense not at all sinister. Any person who embarks upon an undertaking ---commercial, amorous, or whatever -- that seems doomed to fail, is also said to be riding for a fall."

He penned the name Coca-Cola in the flowing script that is famous today. Coca-Cola was first sold at a soda fountain in Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta by Willis Venable!
7.....The locomotive engine popularly known as The General is housed in the Big Shanty Museum in Kennesaw. It was stolen in the in the Andrew's Railroad Raid in 1862 and later depicted in The Great Locomotive Chase, a popular movie!
8.....The figures of Stonewall Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E. Lee make up the world's largest sculpture. It is located on the face of Stone Mountain. Additionally Robert E. Lee's horse, Traveler, is also carved at the same place!
9.....The world's largest infantry training center is located at Fort Benning!
10....Athens is the location of the first university chartered and supported by state funds!
"AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL...."HELEN, GEORGIA"
Formerly a logging town that was in decline, the city resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. Because of this. tourism is the main industry in Helen, Georgia, catering mostly to weekend visitors from the Atlanta area and also motorcyclists who enjoy riding the beautiful roads of Helen and it surrounding areas during all seasons. Helen is extremely crowded in late October, when autumn leaves typically peak. It also hosts its own Oktoberfest during September, October and November. There are many events and festivals throughout the year. One of the most well-known is Southern Worthersee, which is a stateside Volkswagen and Audi even that pays tribute to the Worthersee Tour in Austria with attendance of approximately 20,000 people. Also the annual hot-air balloon race held the first weekend in June.
"Why do They Call Large Trucks "Semis"? Semi-Whats?"
"The power unit of commercial trucks, the part that actually pulls the load, is called the "tractor" The tractor pulls some form of trailer, either a "full trailer" or a "semitrailer." According to Neill Darmstadter, senior safety engineer for the American Trucking Associations, 'A semitrailer is legally defined as a vehicle designed so that a portion of its weight rests on a towing vehicle. This distinguishes it from a full trailer on which the entire load, except for a drawbar, rests on its own wheels.'
Semi is short for 'tractor-semitrailer,' but most truckers use the term semi to refer to both the trailer alone and the tractor-semitrailer combination. Since the tractor assumes part of the burden of carrying the weight of the semitrailer, the 'semi' must have a mechanism for propping up the trailer when the power vehicle is disengaged. The semitrailer is supported by the rear wheels in back and by a small pair of wheels, called the landing gear, which can be raised and lowered by the driver. The landing gear is located at the front of the semitrailer, usually just behind the rear wheels of the tractor."
