Two Irish men were working for the city public works department. One would dig a hole and the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked up one side of the street, then down the other, then moved on to the next street, working furiously all day without rest, one man digging a hole, the other filling it in again.
An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, "I'm impressed by the effort you two are putting into your work, but I don't get it. Why do you dig a hole, only to have your partner follow behind and fill it up again?"
The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, "Well, I suppose it probably looks odd because we're normally a three person team, but today the lad who plants the trees called in sick."

OUR UPCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2015
Marcie Burleson will be bringing Nick Riali as the program for this coming Thursday, July 23. Nick is a very significant part of the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department with a special emphasis on active older adult programs. He usually can be found in the San Marcos Activity Center, but not always. They put out a quarterly newsletter explaining many of the upcoming programs available for the public. Nick is classified as a Program Management Specialist and he is very proud of working with this very special group of people. Some of the programs coming up available to anyone are: SMASH Trail Tours beginning in September.The first Trail tour will be the Spring Lake Natural Area,(Sept 2)....On September 19th, there will be a really 'cool' tour to Dick's Classic Car Garage over on Hunter Road.
Then on August 21, 2015, Central Texas Medical Center and the City of San Marcos Parks & Recreation will be cohosting a FREE Senior Day Dance at the Activity Center.....Then sometime in September, there will be a Coushatta Travel Group Trip TBA. On August 23, there is going to be a Theater Travel Trip to the Gaslight Theater to see "Talking Pictures, A Slice of Small-town Southern Life. Then Nick is in charge of monthly luncheons, Game Days, Bingo, Adult Pickleball, Movies in Your Park and many more. Nick is a very interesting person and it takes a very special person to do what he does. Don't miss this special program this coming Thursday. Thanks Marcie for bringing him.

Yes, indeed we had a winner last week. Sam Brannon, was all smiles when his name was drawn. He had on his pin, and even though it was only $4.00, he turned it all back into the Eliminate Project. Congrats Sam!

 THE OCTOBER DASH 5K RUN IS IN IT'S PLANNING STAGE....OCTOBER 24, 2015....AT SAN MARCOS TOYOTA BACK LOT.
The planning committee for the upcoming October Dash is underway. There's a lot of planning that has to be done. A lot of people to contact. Let's not wait until the last minute. Kelli Whigham, the Event Coordinator handed out Sponsor letters and Sponsor forms last Thursday. They are self explanatory. We all need to contact at least three business by this coming Thursday asking for contributions to help underwrite expenses such as any letters-Shirts, Awards and Refreshments etc. Any donation will be appreciated. If you did not pick up any letters and forms they will be available this coming Thursday at our regular club meeting. All you need is one, and you can make copies. This is one of our important fundraisers, the monies raised through sponsorship and runners fees go to scholarships and other charitable organizations , within our high school, middle school and elementary schools, as well as Hays County Youth Livestock Expo, Capital Area of Boy Scouts, and the Hays County Food Bank. GENERAL CLUB DISCUSSION WELL RECEIVED.
GaryNelson led our noon meeting last Thursday with general discussion with regards to ways and means that our club could be better, Since it was a general discussion, everyone was encouraged to provide positive suggestions. The subject of discussion ranged all the way from using committee members in a more positive manner to writing down detailed instructions that would be easy to understand for new members. This would entail writing hard copies of what the project is, who the leader is, when do we start, and all the details that start with the beginning of the event and having a timeline so that everyone knows pretty much is expected to accomplish the event. As many of you who receive the weekly bulletin, whether you are a Kiwanis member or a friend that wishes to receive the bulletin, some of the information about our activities are within the software called Clubrunner. We draft up the bulletin in it, we keep all our records in it, and we also have on the home page (and you need a computer to bring this up) are what we call "Site Pages". These site pages cover many of the activities that we are involved in. You can click on each of these site pages and if the data is up to date, you can get some idea of the event that may be coming up. We need to broaden the information to provide as much information about an event as is necessary. But we also need to provide hard copies for our files that we can hand to those responsible for acomplishing the event, especially the new memberxs. Thank you Gary for walking us through this. July 17, 1821.......Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California
