Our Upcoming Program for this Thursday, June 9, 2016.
Ted Breihan will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday, June 9th. He will be bringing Kathryn Brady, District Conservationist at USDA-NRCS.
Kathryn is a driven, motivated person combining organization and time management skills. She is conscientious and diligent as well as passionate about her work. Kathryn's interests lie in the arenas of agriculture and natural resources law and policy. She is especially enthusiastic about water law and policy.
Kathryn has studied agricultural journalism and has assisted in composing newsletters during her internships. Kathryn also enjoys adult and youth agricultural education, she volunteers with the Hays County 4-H as well as the South Texas Bobwhite Brigade. In addition she is involved in the Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo and the Texas Section Society for Range Management. I know that we as Kiwanis members are interested in all of the natural surroundings around our city, so lets have a great turnout for Katharine.

Funeral for Mary Louise Byrd....Wednesday, June 8th, 2016....10am....St John's Catholic Church in San Marcos.
It is hoped that as many Kiwanis members can attend the funeral of Mary Louise Byrd on this date. We can all sit together, and wear our Kiwanis Shirt.
Mary dedicated more than 20 years to the San Marcos chapter of Kiwanis International where she was the first woman to be inducted and served as secretary for five years. Mary Louise volunteered countless hours of service to her church and San Marcos, the community she loved. Mary Louise shared her heart and talents with others. She instinct fully sought out those most in need -- the young, the old, the disabled or shut ins.
Mary Louise left this life a devoted wife, mother and friend to many. but will continue to watch over those she loved while waiting to be reunited with us all. Mary Louise Byrd will be greatly missed, but lives on in our hearts and countless memories.
Holy Rosary followed by a visitation period will be at Pennington Funeral Home at 6pm, Tuesday, June 7th, 2016. Then the mass will be said in her memory the next day at 10am. It is hoped we will have a goodly number of our Kiwanis members present,
"How to Get Real Smart!
A customer at Stingray Fishmongers marveled at the owner's quick wit and intelligence. "Tell me, Simon, what makes you so smart?" "I wouldn't share my secret with just anyone, 'Simon replies, lowering his voice so the other shoppers couldn't hear, but since you are such a good and faithful customer, I'll let you in on it. Fish heads. You eat enough of them and you will become positively brilliant.'
'You sell them here?' the customer asks. 'Only $4 a piece, says Simon. Well the customer buys three. A week later, he's back in the store complaining that the fish heads were disgusting and he wasn't any smarter.
'You didn't eat enough,' 'says Simon. The customer goes home with 20 more fish heads. Two weeks later, he/'s back and this time he's really angry.
" Hey, Simon, he complains, 'you're selling me fish heads for $4 a piece when I can buy the whole fish for $2. You're ripping me off!'
'You see?' 'you're smarter already'"

What a fantastic program we had last Thursday. Cpl Scott Johnson from the San Marcos Police Department and one who is basically in charge of giving polygraph tests here in this area. He has such a broad range of experience not only in the field of polygraph testing, but he is also a very valuable member of the Police Department for many years. His presentation brought quite a few questions from those who were present. He also mentioned that there is going to be another session of Civilian Police Academy and will let us know when that will be. Thanks Scott and Thanks McBride for a great presentation.

My final thought in this issue is a rather unusual one, and I just had to share it with my readers. As many of you know, I am a Veteran with over 20 years of military service. I am proud to be a veteran. Last Monday was Memorial Day and you know that it rained cats and dogs, so we were not able to put up our regular flags as a Club. One year ago, we had that terrible flood. Thank God it wasn't a repeat of that.
My wife and I decided to go to lunch together over at Cracker Barrel. Our kids gave Marie a gift card to Cracker Barrel for Mother's Day, so we decided to use it. After almost 30 minutes of waiting and shopping, our name was finally called and we went in, and sat down and ordered our meal. The room was crowded. We got our meal and had just started to eat when this lady came up to us, and asked if I was a veteran. I said yes, and then to my great surprise, she said she was going to pay for our meal. She wanted to know who our waitress was, we told her, and she went up and told her that our bill was being paid for. We didn't know this lady, except that she was a veteran too. Both Marie and I were dumbfounded by this generous offer of this lady. We both asked the waitress if this happens very often, she said 'yes', but it has never happened to either Marie or myself. Well, we bought some items after eating from CB, and used our gift card, and we wound up paying 2.64 over and above the gift card, and to this lady, whoever you may be, both Marie and I say 'Thank you and God Bless people like you'.

Last Monday was Memorial Day and you know that it rained cats and dogs, so we were not able to put up our regular flags as a Club. One year ago, we had that terrible flood. Thank God it wasn't a repeat of that.
