Last Week's program -
Charles Johnson, as usual did his enthusiastic display of knowledge with regards to his vast journey travelogues. This time, Charles took us to London, England, and specifically to Oxford University and Cambridge University. He shared details about student life in the university, from subject matter to what color the professors and students wore on their robes upon graduation. He fielded many questions from the club members, as many of our members are also former University professors. It was very enlightening to see the grandiose architecture of the universities, as well as the immense size of the buildings. Thanks Charles for sharing your experiences with our club. Maybe next time, we'll be invited to go along.
Definitely, congratulations are in order. Chester Bank's name was drawn once again, and talk about a struggle as to what to do with $4.00. His good nature and generous spirit won out and he put it back, so next week, it's $6.00.
Welcome to our Guests last Thursday August 18th, 2016
We welcomed Rhonda White who was brought by Kelli Whigham, and the wonderful thing about this was that Rhonda wanted to have a Kiwanis new member registration. Rhonda, thanks for coming and we are eager to welcome you as a new member when that time comes.
If you want to order Kiwanis shirts, the order forms have been at club meetings. The order must be ordered and submitted prior to September 8th. They can be ordered at the club meeting on September 8th. The photo to the left is a short sleeve dark blue dress shirt.
The Program this coming Thursday, September 1st, 2016
There will not be a formal program this coming Thursday, but there will be a RoundTable at Grins for those who are not involved in this year's Chamber of Commerce Exposition. If you have signed up for the time slots, please be prompt. If you have never been to a Business Exposition before, it is an experience that you won't want to miss. Going from booth to booth, and taking home what they have to offer is well worth it. We have a great opportunity to tell the community just what it is that Kiwanis means to our kids, from Pre-elementary to University level. Kiwanis is all about kids, and in case you don't know our motto, it is "WE BUILD". See you Thursday. Remember the time of the Exposition - 10am - 6:00pm. We will need help in setting up and tearing down of our booth.
"A New San Marcos Club Brochure has been completed"
Thanks to the wonderful efforts of Doug Balkman, Lon Shell , and Pam Cook, a new tri-fold brochure has been developed and hopefully will be available to hand out to participants in the September Chamber Exposition. Keep in mind, those who will be manning our booth, that we represent our entire club, so be positive and enthusiastic. It is not necessarily our intention to seek a lot of new members, although, how we respond to the many visitors that will be asking questions will show how we feel about our club.
This new brochure will be a great addition to how we present our club. We do a lot for the community, and those that approach us represent the community. Thanks again for a job well done with the new brochure.
"Kiwanis Is A Verb"...No. 7....Committees in Kiwanis
"In all but the smallest Kiwanis clubs, the real service activity is committee-centered. Committees submit annual budget proposals to the club's Board and, once their proposed programs and budgets are approved, the committees may then function with only periodic progress reports to the Board. They may spend their allotted funds and undertake projects without further approvals. That's the theory.
Every club member is assigned to one or more committees and every committee meets regularly to carry out its program. Each month, every committee reports its progress to the club's President and Secretary, and each newly inducted club member is promptly assigned to serve on a committee, whose chairperson enthusiastically invites the new member to attend the next committee meetings. That's the theory!
Practically every issue that comes before the Board passes through a committee first and it arrives at the club's Board meeting with a committee recommendation. That's the theory!
The committee chairperson speaks for the committee at Club Board meetings and he or she (or an assigned substitute) attends eve4y club Board meeting to answer questions and represent the interests of the committee there. That's the theory!" (That's enough for this week.)
A Reminder to bring in your Sponsorships. These are important!
It's not too soon to put this on your calendar. It will be here before you know it. Kelli handed out Requests for getting sponsors for this race. It will be held the same place it was held last year, San Marcos Toyota. The date is October 29, 2016. It will be organized by our club. Meetings will begin right away. Be sure and get started on soliciting sponsors for this race. This is a major fundraisers that will help charitable endeavors in San Marcos and Hays County, also scholarships, San Marcos High School Key Club, Miller Junior High Builder's Club, De Zavala Elementary K-Kids & Terrific Kids, Hays County Youth Livestock Expo, Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Hays County Food Bank. Kelli also handed out a list from last year on who sponsored the race, so.....Go Fer It! Every member of our club should be participating in this event. You all are needed!

"America The Beautiful"
The Royal Gorge suspension bridge near Canon City, Colorado is the highest suspension bridge in the world. It spans the Arkansas River at a height of 1,053 feet. Thousands of tourists visit the site yearly and enjoy either a drive or a walk across this suspension bridge. If you are even more daring, take the Incline Railway, which is the world's steepest rail, to the bottom of the gorge. You will plunge 1,550 feet toward the bottom at a 45 degree angle!
