Our Program last Thursday was one that few people would experience!
Garry White, our program last week had a very interesting power point presentation of the rare opportunity that he had to travel to Hawaii to attend the de-commissioning of a US. Nuclear Submarine, The USS City of Corpus Christi. He was invited by his brother who played in the band at the ceremony, and then went with several persons to tour the inside of the submarine. Garry told of his experiences in the only way that he always tells of his adventures, and that was with a great deal of enthusiasm and a little bragging (just kidding Garry). It was extremely interesting. the submarine was being shipped to Maryland after the decommissioning where it will be dismantled and the parts will be used on other vessels. Thank you Garry, you lucky guy!
"The Program for this coming Thursday, August 11th, 2016"
Kelli Whigham is bringing the program this coming Thursday, and it is going to be Samantha Armbruster, General Manager of the San Marcos Main Street program.
Responsible for revitalizing the city with events and projects centered on community involvement, Samantha, a native San Marcos resident spearheads the Main Street program.
Main Street is a nationwide program run by the National Trust. In Texas it is managed the Texas Historical Commission and is a program under the City of San Marcos. Their goal is to support and revitalize downtown San Marcos. They are very much in support of San Marcos and the businesses within the city. I think that all of us have at some time or not during their life in San Marcos been affected by a program or programs that have been generated through a suggestion from someone or a carefully thought even that benefits our city. Thanks Kelli for bringing Samantha and let's have a great turnout for this charming lady.
"Kiwanis of the Month of July, 2016"
I know that this is a bit late, but the recipient for Kiwanis for the Month of July and your editor couldn't get together to get a picture. Anyway, President Moe presented Glen Rydl, our club Secretary to be given the honor of being Kiwanis for the month of July.
As anyone who has ever been a Kiwanis Secretary knows, it is a never ending job, not just on club meeting days, but all through the week, month and year! The Secretary has to submit so many forms to District and International, as well as keeping up with attendance each week, ordering supplies from T/O District, making sure that when the time comes to see who has had perfect attendance through the year, that they get the proper recognition. They also have to file tax forms as well as being at every board meeting, taking minutes, printing out the minutes. It is a very important job, and a necessary one. Glen has done a remarkable job as Secretary and truly is a Kiwanian of the Month.

Last Thursday at our noon club meeting, President Moe presented the newest Kiwanian of the month T-
Shirt. This time for the month of August. It was given to our Region Trustee, Rob Martin. Rob has been with our club for four years, going on five and in that short period of time, he has been President of our local club, Lt Governor for Division 38, and now was elected to be Region 1 Trustee, which makes him responsible not just one Division, but three. Rob is a going individual, not afraid of new responsibilities, and will represent our Region and our Division with great enthusiasm. He is on the go quite a bit, but gets to our weekly club meeting as often as he can. Congratulations Rob. You have earned it.

"Until about 2000, the catchphrase, 'A Magazine for Community Leaders appeared on the cover of Kiwanis magazine. The catchphrase meant that
(a) Community leaders join Kiwanis. (b). Kiwanis members become community leaders. (c) The editors of Kiwanis magazine are trying to flatter their readers into a good frame of mind before they open the cover. (d) All of the above.
Whatever it means, Kiwanis has long offered its members many opportunities for leadership.
Consider the following facts.
.....The average Kiwanis Club has 34 members.
......Most clubs' Bylaws specify a minimum of:
5 officers
5 Directors and
7 Standing Committees, each of which must have a Chairperson.
That is, assuming no overlapping assignments, about half of the members in the average Kiwanis club have an elected or appointed leadership position.
In addition:
...Most clubs have bulletin editors (a position of influence -- a form of leadership)
...Most clubs have special committees (e.g. FundRaising, Public Relations, Interclubs etc.)
Putting it all together, 60% or more the members of the average Kiwanis club have an elected or assigned leadership role at any given time. That's roughly equal to most clubs' average weekly Kiwanis meeting attendance!. In other words, if you're not a leader in Kiwanis now, you will get your chance soon."

It's Time Again to Begin Thinking about The 'Great Pumpkin Dash'
It's not too soon to put this on your calendar. It will be here before you know it. Kelli handed out Requests for getting sponsors for this race. It will be held the same place it was held last year, San Marcos Toyota. The date is October 29, 2016. It will be organized by our club. Meetings will begin right away. Be sure and get started on soliciting sponsors for this race. This is a major fundraisers that will help charitable endeavors in San Marcos and Hays County, also scholarships, San Marcos High School Key Club, Miller Junior High Builder's Club, De Zavala Elementary K-Kids & Terrific Kids, Hays County Youth Livestock Expo, Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Hays County Food Bank. Kelli also handed out a list from last year on who sponsored the race, so.....Go Fer It! Every member of our club should be participating in this event. You all are needed!
