San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, Sept. 25, 2025
We had guests Kaycee (future member) and Robert, who came with Veronica.

Susie Hernandez received her "Kiwanian Rookie of the Year" award as she was unable to attend the Installation Banquet. Congratulations, Susie! Well earned.

Jessica Rodriguez was inducted into the club today. She brings lots of skills and enthusiasm. The committees she has chosen to work on are Scholarship, Camp McBride, and either K-Kids or Builder's Club. We are hoping to increase participation in Service Leadership Programs so her willingness to help in that area is most welcome. Welcome to the club, Jessica!

I am taking this opportunity to say this is my last newsletter as official Editor. Penny, our new Secretary, volunteered to take over. There is a continuity to this as her dad, Del Brown, was a past editor for what was then called the Bulletin. She will be great at both this and as Secretary! It has been fun but I am ready to hand over the job.

REPORTS:
Rick, Willie, Penny and Jennifer had a budget meeting and a separate planning meeting earlier in the week. They are ready to present a proposed budget at the October Board meeting.

The Planning meeting was mainly about committees with a small number being eliminated due to no longer being needed and some consolidation of others. A sheet will be passed out to members for sign up. Rick has some committee members and chairpersons already in place. We have some gaps to fill in and the sooner the better so we can keep events, projects, and programs continuing.

There is a Social scheduled for Nov. 5th (a Wednesday) at McBride Wilson Camp starting at 6:00 pm. Willie will be the chef. More details later about food donations such as for desserts.

OctoBEARFest is on October 4th from 4:00-7:00 at the San Marcos Baptist Academy. Wille, Penny, Rick and Jennifer signed up to be at our table with Steve taking care of the 360.

Susie and committee are still aggresively promoting the Great Pumpkin Dash.

The First United Methodist Church is having a Pumpkin Patch from October 13-31. They are said to have a large variety of pumpkins. All proceeds go to School Fuel.

Kristi said there is a car show being held at the VFW Hall on Dec. 6th. She would like to have the Kiwanis Club participate by selling breakfast tacos there that morning. We all looked at Willie who is our chef extraordinaire. This could raise some much needed funds for our Admin. acct. What's not to like about old cars and tacos?

Looking ahead, the Veteran's Parade is on Nov. 8th. Lon has already signed up to have Kiwanis participate and, as usual, we will have the Bicycle Brigade lined up.

Ashley Schimelman and Gem Coleman

PROGRAM: Ashley Schimelman and Gem Coleman gave a presentation on the latest San Marcos Public Library's Summer Reading Program. That program has been running for a little over 30 years. It's goal has always been about incentivizing  and getting kids excited about reading. This year's results show almost 1600 reading logs were turned in and over 13,000 hours of reading were recorded. The program has expanded to include adults and they do count reading to babies. Our annual donations help them out and this year the funds went toward prizes for the kids who excelled in reading.

Gem, who is the new Children's Library librarian, went over a PowerPoint showing the different activities that occurred during the last Summer Reading Program event. Big Rigs, STEM, Birds of Prey, a Reptile Show and musical performances plus hands-on crafts kept the kids entertained. One photo showed our own Chester and Luanne who always help out at this event. Doug Balkman, a former Kiwanis member, is still helping out with STEM.  There is talk about the Art Dept. at Texas State working in computer programming to use technology in art expression. This may be added as another part of the Summer Reading Program kickoff. Maybe STEM will become STEAM as Lon suggested?

Ashley thanked Kiwanis for our participation through volunteering and our annual monetary donations. Lon said this is one of the best events in which the Kiwanis Club participates. Member Glen is one of the strongest advocates for this program. We will definitely continue our support for this most worthwhile program.
