The Program from last Thursday!
Thanks to Pam Cook who brought as our program last Thursday, a man who has been here once before, and is currently the Director of the Price Center in San Marcos.
Clay DeStefano is a writer, artist and change agent. He has written a new book and for his program shared some passages from it and then had a question and answer session from the club. Thanks Clay & Pam
We are not sure where David Chandler is at this moment, but think he is out of the state of Texas. David, we miss you, and know you'll be back as soon as you can. Anyway, David's name was drawn for Bib Bucks, so there is a little bit more in the jar.
"Pack Your Bags, Get Your Camera, We are Going to Visit London, England"
We have a very interesting program coming up this coming Thursday. Charles Johnson will be bringing us one of his famous 'travelogues'. This time it will be to London, England. The only part of England that I have seen was from the deck of the "USS United States" in 1960, where we stopped at Southampton, England before going on to Germany. Charles tells me that he will have some excellent pictures of places he has travelled, including the John Wesley Church. Of course, we all should recognize 'Big Ben' clock , and some of the triple tiered busses (well maybe only double tiered). It will be an very interesting program told in only the way that Charles can tell it. Do plan on attending.
"A New San Marcos Club Brochure has been completed"
Thanks to the wonderful efforts of Doug Balkman, Lon Shell , and Pam Cook, a new tri-fold brochure has been developed and hopefully will be available to hand out to participants in the September Chamber Exposition. Keep in mind, those who will be manning our booth, that we represent our entire club, so be positive and enthusiastic. It is not necessarily our intention to seek a lot of new members, although, how we respond to the many visitors that will be asking questions will show how we feel about our club.
This new brochure will be a great addition to how we present our club. We do a lot for the community, and those that approach us represent the community. Thanks again for a job well done with the new brochure.
"Kiwanis Is A Verb"...No 6.
""You will hear a lot of talk about Membership Growth in Kiwanis. The reasons boil down to More Service and Better Service.More Service because there are more hands to do the work of Kiwanis. and Better Services because there are more Kiwanians paying dues enabling a stronger central Kiwanis support system.
The average club inducts about six new Kiwanians in a year. That may not sound like many at first but it adds up to the equivalent of the population of a moderately sized city every year.
......(Editor's question, 'How do I ask a person to join Kiwanis? He or she might turn me down') "The person you ask probably will turn you down if you nit him or her cold with Would you like to join my Kiwanis club? Unsure what he or she might be getting into, your prospect will probably respond I'm awfully busy right how and feeling rejected, you may never again offer to share your newly found Kiwanis with anyone. Three of every four new Kiwanians never get past their first rejection.
You will have a better chance of success if you invite a friend to join you for lunch at the Kiwanis club you just joined. You might I'd like you to meet some interesting new friends of mine. Or you could say There's going to be a great program at my Kiwanis club's meeting next week.
If you really want the person to join your club you might use this sure-fire approach: My Kiwanis club is a little short-handed for our service project next weekend. Would you mind helping us out?"

"America The Beautiful"
The Scoville Memorial Library in Connecticut is the oldest public library in the United States. Begun in 1771 by Richard Smith, owner of a local blast furnace, it was made up of a collection 200 books brought in London with community contributions. Patrons could borrow and return books the third Monday of each month.
Fees were collected for damages, the most common being "greasing" caused by candle wax.

A Reminder to bring in your Sponsorships. These are important!
It's not too soon to put this on your calendar. It will be here before you know it. Kelli handed out Requests for getting sponsors for this race. It will be held the same place it was held last year, San Marcos Toyota. The date is October 29, 2016. It will be organized by our club. Meetings will begin right away. Be sure and get started on soliciting sponsors for this race. This is a major fundraisers that will help charitable endeavors in San Marcos and Hays County, also scholarships, San Marcos High School Key Club, Miller Junior High Builder's Club, De Zavala Elementary K-Kids & Terrific Kids, Hays County Youth Livestock Expo, Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Hays County Food Bank. Kelli also handed out a list from last year on who sponsored the race, so.....Go Fer It! Every member of our club should be participating in this event. You all are needed!
