OH NO, MISSED AGAIN!
This is two weeks in a row that someone's name was drawn that that person was not present. CHAD BURNS name was drawn, and since he is a teacher at Miller Middle School, he was not able to get to the meeting. We put the missed money to good use and donated it to the program for that day, 'School Fuel'.
Friends of Scouting Luncheon to Honor BRUCE INGRAM.
Don't forget that this coming Tuesday, April 19, there will be a "Friends of Scouting Luncheon, held at the Embassy Suite from 11:50am - 1pm.
Our club has a table for ten set up. Those who will be going from our club are: Randy & Pam Cook, Del & Marie Brown, Kellie Whigham, John Polk, Rob Martin, Doug & Jeanne Balkman, and Charles Johnson.
Our program for this coming Thursday, April 21st
Our program for this coming Thursday will be brought by Doug Balkman and will be presenting the Hay's County Food Bank's new Volunteer Services Manager, Holly Hood.
Holly Hood, of Kyle, Tx. brings six years of experience in the non-profit world. The rest of the staff at the Food Bank were ecstatic to have her.
Holly moved to San Marcos from Plano in 2003 to attend Texas State University. She enjoyed volunteering for Crop Walk (the Food Bank has been involved with this event, Bobcat Build, Relay for Life, and remained active in several volunteer organizations while going to school. She graduated from TSU with a Bachelor's degree in Health and Wellness Promotion in 2007. After graduation, she wanted to remain in the area she fell in love with, so she moved to Kyle and started working at a local nonprofit. In 2012, she earned a Masters of Education with a focus in Community Health from TSU.
Holly says,"while working at a local nonprofit for over 6 years, I enjoyed working with volunteers of all ages from all walks of life. It was such a blessing to help connect volunteers to different service opportunities and to serve along with them in the community." "The relationship and bonds formed are something I will never forget."
The Hays County Food Bank is thrilled to have found someone so passionate about what they do, and as the new Volunteer Services Manager, the Food Bank feels there is no better person for the job.

NOW THERE'S A TEACHER! (Copied from an E-mail)
"In September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a Social Studies teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, Ark. did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks in her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. 'Ms Cothren, where are our desks?' She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.' They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.' 'No.' she said, 'Maybe it's our behavior.' She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.' And so, they came and went, the first period, second, third period. Still, no desks were in the classroom. Kids called their parents to tell them what was happening and by early afternoon television news crews had started gathering at the school to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her classroom. The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom. Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he or she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.' At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty seven (27) U.S. Armed Services Veterans, all in uniform, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand. perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.
Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. They went halfway around the world, giving up their education and interrupting their careers and families so you could have the freedoms you have. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, and to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'
By the way this is a true story. And this teacher was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year for the State of Arkansas in 2006. She is the daughter of a WW-II POW (Prisoner of War)."

`Thanks for Gary Strunk, Nancy Smith, and Jenny Mangrun for a wonderful program last week.
Nancy gave a very empassioned story about how "School Fuel" all got started. She indicated that the whole idea of School Fuel began when a handful of volunteer from a local San Marcos church served lunch at a soup kitchen in Austin for a mission project. Through the exposure and impact that the mission project had, those volunteers became aware of hunger issues in our own area.
This is a community-wide project to meet a community-wide need, and as such, the community of San Marcos has cooperatively answered the hunger cry.
The goal of School Fuel is to see that on Fridays the children go home with a sack of nutritional food. How many students are covered is based on the funding that is provided.
$215 feeds a child for a school year, There are four meals, 4 snacks in a School Fuel sack. There are an estimated 2861 students among the elementary schools in need of School Fuel.
In 2013-14, 297 students were fed. In 2014-15, 414 students were fed. Their goal for 2015-16 is to reach over 500 students. The teachers and school administrators select the students for the School Fuel program.

It was great seeing John Polk and Rob Martin back with us last Thursday. Healing can be such an exhaustive process, but both looked pretty good. Also let's keep Chester Banks in our prayers. He is recovering from surgery last week.
