San Marcos Kiwanis Newsletter, February 15, 2024
Lon introduced guests Rob and Judy Martin. Rob is a former member who has served as a past President. Andrew Gary and Cheryl Petre attended, as well. Good to see all of them. It was a well attended and active meeting.
Jesse did the honors of inducting Stacie Levao into the club. He said she’s a single mom of 5 kids, serves as president for Brooks Oaks academy PTO, and is the Girl Scouts Southwest activities Coordinator. She will be working in the marketing committee by improving our social media presence and will be on the scholarship committee as well as volunteering at our upcoming events all year. 
Stacie has already been like a member for some time but is now officially inducted. Welcome, Stacie!
REPORTS:
Lon said he is starting a new tradition that a new member will take home the Kiwanis opening/closing bell to polish starting with Stacie.
 
Rhonda: Rhonda brought cupbakes and donuts for the February birthday celebrations for Stacie Levao, Willie Garza, Luanne Johns, Penny Stavik, and James Collier.
 
She also auctioned off a dozen farm fresh eggs as a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Administrative fund. Cheryl had the winning bid at $11. 
 
The calendar has more information now so check it out on the San Marcos Kiwanis homepage. Rhonda brought a few printed copies for those who do not regularly use computers.
 
Rhonda noted that the Clay Shoot is on April 27th. She emailed a packet to all members concerning getting sponsors and details of the event plus brought a few hard copies to the meeting. The committee will start collecting raffle items for the bucket raffle. 
 
Kelli: She along with Beverly, Charles, Rhonda, and Kristin attended the Friends of Scouting Luncheon on Feb. 8th.
 
The program for our next meeting is the Lion's Club history by Dennis Gutierrez.
Our club is trying to come together with other clubs in a spirit of helping each other out in our different endeavors.
 
Pam: Flags will be put out next week on Monday for President's Day. This is the last flag day until Memorial Day. Cheryl has volunteered to help out with routes.
 
Rick: He gave an update on the progress for preparation for Pancake Day. Banners are still being modified. Some of the posters with directional signals are ready. Next week he will have another meeting to finalize all details. 
Program:
Jesse introduced Page Michel who is President of the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce. Before becoming the President here, she served as the President of the Texas City-La Marque Chamber in Galveston County and prior to that spent 14 years serving as the President of the Brenham/Washington County Chamber of Commerce and Brenham Economic Development Foundation. All of this experience well prepared her for the very active San Marcos Area Chamber which has been around for 120 years. Page calls the Chamber of Commerce a club for businesses. The idea of Chambers started in Europe about 130 years ago. It developed into an approved vendor list for doing trade. This is still greatly the case as 63% of residents are more likely to do business with a Chamber member. 
Page shared the printed "Chamber Welcome Guide" which is very helpful to tourists. The Chamber also prints out 10,000 maps of the area which include a detailed street map and the Texas State U. campus. Pamphlets are also printed with events listed such as the April 8th solar eclupse, Cornhole Team competition, and the "Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math" (STEAM)Fair on April 6th.
