We had an Eye Opening Program Last Week!
Moe Johnson, Gary Nelson and Jean Balkman gave us a really great program last Thursday in highlighti8ng what all our Kiwanis Club does for the community. We are constantly looking for guests to visit our club, and if interested, to come and join us. But I wonder just how many people really know what our club does throughout the year. I'm going to share information presented by our Membership committee to those who are receiving our weekly bulletin so if someone asked you about Kiwanis and what it does, you can refer them to these significant activities.....YOUTH SERVICE (Circle K Club at Texas State University; Key Club at San Marcos High School; Builder's Club at Miller Middle School; K-Kids at DeZavala Elementary School; Terrific Kids at DeZavala Elementary School. SCHOLARSHIPS: 6 - $1,000 High Schools Seniors; FLAGPROGRAM....patriotic display- over 100 FLAGS FOR 8 holidays; WEEKLY luncheon and community speakers; BUILDING OFHANDICAP RAMPS (about 10+ per year); CAMP ON THE BLANCO...8 acres used by Scout and non profit groups; CHARITY. $18,000 donated in 2017 -2018 (local community, Salvation Army, HCWC. Food Bank, School Fuel; MEDICAL EXPLORER PROGRAM, $1,000 annually;VETERANS - Annual Parade and donating 2 children's bikes; INTERNATIONAL, Eliminate Program, (over $23,000), IDD & Outreach; FUNDRAISERS - Pancake Day & Silent Auction, Great Pumpkin DasH 5K race, Flag Program, funds going to Public Library's Children's Reading Program.
Kiwanis Pancake and Silent Auction
This year's Pancake and Auction will be a very special one. Not only is our 80th Anniversary, but in addition to our wonderful pancakes and Sausage meal, our Auction tables will have a new addition. There will be special baskets, filled with all sorts of goodies. Come, and bid on these on Thursday, February 28th at the San Marcos Activity Center, There will be two serving times: 11:30 am to 1:30pm and 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. This will be a humdinger of a event. You can come with tickets that you have or you can buy at the door for $5.00. Don't miss out on this wonderful event. Tell your friends and be sure and come yourselves.
Flag Display on President's Day
President's Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February (February 18, 2019). Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents Day after it was moved as part of 1971's Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation's workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S., Presidents, past and present.
Those who are putting out flags meet at Ted's place at 7:00amon Monday, the 18th of February and then pick them up again between 4:30pm and 5:00pm.
Our Program for this coming Thursday, February 14th
Our program for this coming Thursday will be provided by Frederick Case and he will be bringing Dr. Jim Kimmel. Dr. Kimmel is an Emeritus professor of Geography at TxState University, where he was an award winning teacher and writer. He has authored two books, "The San Marcos: A River's Story" and "Exploring the Brazos River."
Dr. Kimmel received degrees from Baylor, Yale and U.T. Austin He served as a Peace Corp Volunteer in West Africa and has travelled widely in North America, Europe and the Middle East. Let's have a good turnout to hear Dr. Kimmel.

February 8, 1587 - - Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, was beheaded at Fotheringhay, England, after 19 years as a prisoner of Queen Elizabeth. She became entangled in the complex political events surrounding the Protestant Reformation in England and was charged with complicity in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth.
February 9, 1943 - - During World War II in the Pacific, U.S. troops captured Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands after six months of battle, with 9,000 Japanese and 2,000 Americans killed.
February 10, 1942 - - The first Medal of honor during World War II was awarded to 2d Lt. Alexander Nininger (posthumously) for heroism during the Battle of Bataan.
February 11,1929 - - Italian dictator Benito Mussolini granted political independence to Vatican City and recognized the sovereignty of the Pope (Holy See) over the area, measuring about 110 acres.
February 12, 1999 - - The impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in the U.S. Senate ended. With the whole world watching via television, Senators stood up one by one during the final roll call to vote 'guilty' or 'not guilty' On Article I (charging Clinton with perjury) 55 senators, including 10 Republicans and all 45 Democrats voted not guilty. On Article 2 (charging Clinton with obstruction of justice) the Senate split evenly, 50 for and 50 against the President. With the necessary two thirds majority not having been achieved, President Clinton was thus acquitted on both charges and served out the remainder of his term of office lasting through January 20, 2001.
February 13, 1635 - - Boston Latin School, the first tax payer supported (public) school in America was established in Boston, Massachusetts.
February 14 - - Celebrated as (Saint) Valentine's Day around the world, now one of the most widely observed holidays in which romantic greeting cards and gifts are exchanged.

What does this phrase mean?
"To be subject to imminent danger; to be in a hazardous position or precarious condition. The allusion is to one Damocles, a courtier in the reign of Dionysius of Syracuse in the fifth century B.C. All we know of this courtier is from the tale told both by Cicero and by Horace. He was given to extreme flattery of his ruler, and, one day, having praised extravagantly the power of Dionysius was invited to see for himself just how much happiness that power brought. How about the Tennessee State Flag History?
The official state flag of Tennessee was adopted on April 17, 1905. This flag was designed by Leroy Reeves of the Third Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry.
The three white stars in the center symbolize the three different geographical regions of Tennessee: the Great Smoky Mountains (in eastern Tennessee), the highlands (in central Tennessee) and the lowlands (in western Tennessee, by the Mississippi River). The white circle binds them together. The blue stripe along the margin was added for distinction when the flag is hanging; with the stripe, not only the red shows while the flag is hanging.
