Our Program Last Thursday, February 9th, 2017.
Our program last week was brought by Randy Cook, and it was fellow Kiwanis member Chad Burns, who did an excellent job of bringing our club up to date on the activities of the Builder's Club at Miller Middle School. Chad teaches Special Education at Miller School, and told our club about the projects that his Builder's club of about 25 students are doing, namely continuing with a project they started two years ago, planting a vegetable garden there at the school. It's difficult, Chad told the club, to have a full teaching schedule and still have time for this extra curriculum with the Builder's club, but he is very positive that this year's is going to bring very good results from the kids he has in the club.
Then Chad also talked about the very frustrating subject of autism. He has a son who is autistic and told about the many frustrating moments he and his wife have had in dealing with this disease. But Chad is very positive and he and his wife work very hard with their son, and feel that much progress is being made, not only with their son, but with the whole subject of autism.
Randy Cook, who was our club's former Treasurer, but also sponsor of the K-Kids and very interested in all of our youth programs, presents to Chad the Builder's Club annual support checks to further the club's plans for this year.

Our program this coming Thursday will be led by Doug Balkman and will be a general discussion of details connected with our annual Pancake Day and Silent Auction to be held on February 23rd. Everyone should try to be present to hear the details and provide your own input.
Flags to be Put Out on Monday, February 20th.
Our flags are to be put up this coming Monday, February 20, meeting at Ted's Place at 7am, and then picked up beginning at 4:30 - 5:00pm.
Washington's Birthday is a United States Federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United states, who was born on February 22, 1732. It can occur on the 15th through the 21st of February inclusive.
Colloquially, the day is also now widely known as President's Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents, not just George Washington.
Friends of Scouting Luncheon
Just a friendly reminder that on Tuesday, February 21st, 2017, the Capital
area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is inviting those who have signed up to go to the Annual Friends of Scouting Luncheon. It will be at 11:50am - 1:00 pm, and will meet in the Spring Lake Ballroom of Embassy Suites of San Marcos. Several members of our Kiwanis Club have signed up, and we will be presenting our budgeted donation to them. Bill Pennington has been selected Honoree of the year, noting his many outstanding deeds he has done for the Scouts and our community. Those who have signed up, check with Charles Johnson and plan to attend, so we can all sit at the same table.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Pancake Day is not that Far Away.....February 23rd.!
OK, we are just a little more than one week before the big day of Pancake Day and Silent Auction. With regards to silent auction items, This coming Thursday is the final day to get your items in to Pam. Remember, everyone has a job to do. Everyone has a copy of the job schedule. Remember setting up is just as important as doing the individual jobs, and we also need to bond together when it comes to cleaning up.
We will have members of the Key Club, and K-Kids helping out, along with Brittany Bouzard, the K-Kids sponsor. Thanks kids and Brittany. They were given 60 tickets to sell and those proceeds will go toward the K-Kids' projects and programs.
February 10, 1942 - - The first Medal of honor during World War II was awarded to 2d Lt. Alexander Nininger (posthumously) for heroism during the battle of Bataan.
February 11, 2011- - In Egypt, President Hosni Mubarak resigned amid a massive protest calling for his ouster. Thousands of young Egyptians and others had protested non-stop for 18 days in Cairo, Alexandria and elsewhere. Mubarak had ruled Egypt for nearly 30 years, functioning as a virtual dictator.
February 12, 1999 - - The impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in the U.S. Senate ended. With the whole word watching via television, Senators stood up one by one during the final roll call to vote 'guilty' or 'not guilty'. On Article I (charging Clinton with perjury) 55 senators, including 10 Republicans and all 45 Democrats voted not guilty. On Article 2 (charging Clinton with obstruction of justice) the Senate split evenly 50 for and 50 against the President. With the necessary two-thirds majority not having been achieved, President Clinton was thus acquitted on both charges and served out the remainder of his term lasting through January 20, 2001.

February 14, 1849 - - Photographer Matthew Brady took the first photograph of a U.S. President in office, James Polk.
February 15, 1933 - - An assassination attempt on newly elected U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt occurred in Miami Florida. A spectator deflected the gunman's aim. As a result, Chicago Anton Cermak was shot and killed instead. The gunman, an Italian immigrant, was captured and later sentenced to death.
February 16, 1935 - - Birthday...Entertainer and politician Sonny Bono was born in Detroit Michigan. Following a career as a popular singer, he became mayor of Palm Springs, California, then became a Republican congressman, serving until his accidental death from a skiing accident.
The Age of Imponderables! - Why Does a Newspaper Tear Smoothly Vertically and Raggedly Horizontally?
Newsprint is made up of many wood fibers. The fibers are placed on printers in pulp form, consisting of 80 to 90 percent water - - the newsprint dries while in the machine. The printing machines are designed to line up the fibers in a horizontal position to add tear strength to the sheet vertically.
The basic purpose of lining up the fibers in ione direction is simply to add stability to the sheet when the press is running.
In other words, the finished newspaper has a grain, just as a piece of meat or linen has a grain. Ever notice how hard it is to tear a bedsheet in one direction and how easy in another? When you rip the newspaper vertically, you are tearing with the grain, or more accurately, between grains. The same principle is in effect when one consumers Twizzlers brand licorice. Individual pieces rip off easily if you tear between the slices.

"America the Beautiful"
Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeastern California. Declared a U.S. National Park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act, it had previously been a U.S. National Monument since 1936. It is named for the Joshua trees, native to the park. It covers a land area of 790,636 acres.
This is an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. A large part of the park, some 429, 690 acres, is a designated wilderness area. Straddling the San Bernardino County/Riverside County border, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains run through the southwest edge of the park.
