Board of Directors Meeting...
Our October Board of Directors met on Thursday, October 24, at 5:00pm in the CTMC Professional Building (Ste 305)
Those present were: Rhonda White, Kelli Whigham, Moe Johnson,Beverly Crumley, Doug Balkman, Ronda y8oung, Lon Shell, Andrew Gary, Charles Walts and Del Brown (Non Voting) John Roppolo was also president.
The Treasurer's Report was given by Doug, and was approved. The new budget for 2019/2010 was discussed and approved.Other business discussed was the Veteran's Day Parade and Bikes for the parade. The flag list was discussed, and Lon gave the update on getting a concrete ramp built for the camp. It was approved to go ahead with it.
Other new business included Salvation army request, discussion about developing an Aktion Club for our club. Also there was an update on the Pumpkin dash, no final figures yet.
Merwin Richard's name was drawn for Big Bucks and he had everything on that he should have had, so he kept it. (Del's riddle was not guessed......(the answer was 'watermelon', so Del put a dollar in 'Happy Dollar')
Program Scheduled for this coming Week.
Lon Shell will be bringing Head Football Coach Jake Spavital of Texas State University. Coach Spavital came to Texas State on November 28, 2018.
K-Kids Induction Ceremony.....
Friday (yesterday) October 25, was a busy time for some of our Kiwanis members. Starting off with some going to join Gary Strunk with the Key Club members at 7:45am, andf then Randy Cook, Kelly Layne, John Polk & Tim Tippett went over to visit The Charter School. The only one that your editor was able to attend was the K-Kids Induction ceremony (photos) at DeZavala Elementary School. Those who attended that event were John Roppolo, Doug Balkman. Pam Cook, Randy Cook, Chester Banks, Francis Mendez, Del Brown and Ted Breihan. At the K-Kids Induction Ceremony, our club presented the students and their sponsor, Christina Pachek their annual $500 support check. Thanks gang!
"Two Big Flag Days Coming Up!
We have flags to be put out in November, as well as to get ready for the Veteran's Day Parade. The first flag day is on Election Day (November 4th) and the second is on Veteran's Day, Monday, November 11. We also will be decorating our Kiwanis float for Saturday, November 9, as well as putting flags around the square on that day. We will need all our club member's involvement in that parade, riding the float or walking with our Children's Bike Brigade.\

October 25, 1854 - - During the Crimean War, the Charge of the Light Brigade occurred as Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against the Russians at Balaclava. Of 673 British cavalrymen taking part in the charge, 272 were killed. The Charge was later immortalized in the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson.
October 26, 1881 - - The shoot-out at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, occurred between the feuding Clanton and Earp families. Wyatt Earp, two of his brothers and 'Doc' Holiday gunned down two Clantons and two others.
October 27, 1787 - - The first of 85 Federalist Papers appeared in print in a New York City newspaper. The essays argued for the adoption of the new U.S. Constituition. They were written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay.
October 28, 1886 - - The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. The statue was a gift from the people of France commemorating the French-American alliance during the American Revolutionary War. Designed by Frederick Auguste Barthboldi, the entire structure stands 300 feet tall. The pedestal contains the words; 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-lost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
October 29.1618 - - British explorer Sir Walter Raleigh was executed in London for treason on orders from King James I.
October 30, 1990 - - For the first time since the Ice Age, Great Britain was connected with the European continent, via a new rail tunnel under the English Channel.
October 31, 1517 - - Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg's palace church, denouncing the selling of papal indulgences and questioning various ecclesiastical practices. This marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in Germany.
Have You Ever Heard -"Badger Game?"
"A form of blackmail, employed upon a man of position or wealth who is enticed into a compromising situation by a woman and is then 'discovered' by one professing to be her husband. To avoid disgrace under threat of legal procedure or newspaper publicity the victim is under the thumb of the conniving operators. To badger, in criminal slag, is to blackmail. This meaning arose from the cruel sport of badger baiting, practiced from time immemorial until comparatively recent years, in which a live badger was placed in an artificial hole, such as a barrel, and dogs were set upon it. Thus 'to badger' came to mean 'to worry, tease, pester,' or leading to the sense above, 'to subject a person in one's power to persecution; hence, to blackmail." This form of blackmail is probably as old as the hills, but association with the term 'badger' and the present name of the practice are American innovations of the past hundred years.

"This small town started as the site of a creamery in the 1860's. Feuding dairy farmers got out of hand and a farmer was shot. Following the tragedy, the town's farmer promised to live in harmony with each other, and thus the town was named."
