An elderly Floridian called 911 on her cell phone to report that her car has been broken into. She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher: 'They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the accelerator!' she cried!
The dispatcher said, 'Stay calm. An officer is on the way.'
A few minutes later, the officer radios in. 'Disregard,' he says. 'She got in the back seat by mistake.'"

OUR ANNUAL INSTALLATION BANQUET IS THIS COMING THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, AT
THE PRICE CENTER, 6:00PM. MEAL WILL BE SERVED AT 6:30PM. RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE 45 WHO HAVE SIGNED UP TO ATTEND.
Remember our Banquet is going to have a wonderful speaker, LTC Tony Williams who is one of the instructors over at SMHS in the JR-ROTC program. He is a fantastic motivational speaker, you will want to hear him.
Besides the wonderful meal furnished by Stegler Chiffonade, of Chicken Scarpariello and Beef Bourguignon, with green beans almandine, garlic mashed potatoes, spinach and cranberry salad, rolls, drinks of tea, coffee and water and Banana and Coconut cream pie. If you haven't paid Randy for your meal, please do so before the 17th.
Remember, beside the installation of our new officers for 2015/2016, we will be handing out 14 Perfect Attendance Awards, 3 Legion of Honor Awards, The Kiwanian of the Year Award, and a special award. We welcome all our members who are coming as well as our special guests.

 We had three guests at our club meeting last Thursdayx....Francis Breihan (brought by Ted); Marie Brown brought by Del Brown and Dan Langam, brought by Randall Grizzle. Do you know what would happen if everyone brought one guest each week.....well ....we just might have to put on 2 waitresses, and Paul at Grins wouild get the biggest 'grin' on his face. Be sure tio always welcome all of our guests. |

.gif) WE HAD ANOTHER WINNER LAST WEEK,FOR OUR BIG BUCKS, AND SO CLOSE TO HIS BIRTHDAY, TOO.
Well, McBride Wilson's name was drawn for Big Bucks, and unfortunately he didn't have his pin on, so that cost him, so we have $3.00 in our little jar for someone to draw on Thursday, September 24.

  We had 18 club members last Thursday to hear Jimmie Scott, President of San Marcos Academy, and his daughter, Shelly Henry who presented a wonderful powerpoint presentation about the history and future endeavors of SMA. Jimmy spoke first and did a general overview of what was going on at the academy, and of course because of the housing changes that is going on out there, the Academy can't help but to get even bigger and more important to our community. Some facts about the Academy were given to refresh our memories on why SMA was named one of the 30 best Christian Boarding Schools in America by TheBestSchools.org. First and foremost, the academy provides a nurturing Christian environment regardless of the student's personal beliefs. The academy has a diverse national and international student population that provides a student exposure to a variety of cultures.They offer fully integrated computer technology into their teaching and student use. The faculty and staff are a top-ranked group of dedicated individuals. They also have the most up to date and modern facilities for their students. They offer such programs as Fine Arts, Music, Equine, Junior ROTC and Classical Studies. They also provide assistance for academically at-risk students as well as students with learning difference. Jimmy Scott and Shelly Henry were very well received and we thank Charles Johnson for bringing them.

 Thanks to the following Kiwanians who came out on Patriot Day last Friday morning to put up flags . It not only was our second time in a week to put the flags out, but there was something very special about this, something that I don't believe any of us will ever forget.   This is a letter written to our incoming President Moe Johnson from Susan Smith, telling us the status of this year's Summer Reading program, an event that the funds from our Flag program help to support. "For more than 25 years, the San Marcos Kiwanis has supported the library's summer reading program. We were delighted to receive your check for $2500.00 in support of our work with children. Your sponsorship meant that we could offer the children of San Marcos a summer full of exciting incentives to read.
This year, the San Marcos Public Library played an especially important part in the lives of our children and their families. Amidst the traumatic experiences that came with the Memorial Day Flood, the library offered a full summer of free 'normal' good times. Kids really needed the 'escape' that a great book offers.
In addition, our new director, Diane Insley, ran the disaster relief distribution center for donated cleaning supplies, water, clothing, and food. This was a month long effort and many of us worked at the center with her. The families we served were very appreciative.
I can assure you that the children who filled the library this summer built strong reading skills. Now we will focus on homework support for school-age children. Of course, we continue to encourage parents to read to preschoolers with four story times a week and our popular puppet shows.
Our young readers read and read and read-----37,474 books, to be exact! Children, teens and adults earned in 3351 reading certificates. Attendance at library events for preschoolers, children and teens neared 10,000.
We really appreciate all the hard work that goes into raising the money that makes it possible for the children of San Marcos to enjoy a wonderful summer of reading adventures at the public library!

HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 11th TO 17TH.
September 11, 2001........The worst terrorist attack in U.S. history occurred as four large passengers jets were hijacked then crashed, killing nearly 3,000 persons. Four separate teams of MidEast terrorists, operating from inside the U.S. boarded the morning flights posing as passengers, then forcibly commandeered the aircraft. Two fully fuelled jumbo jets, American Airlines Flight 11 carrying 92 people and United Airlines Flight 175 carrying 65 people had departed Boston for Los Angeles. Both jets were diverted by the hijackers to New York City where they were piloted into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The impact and subsequent fire caused both 110-story towers to collapse, killing 2,752 persons including hundreds of rescue workers and people employed in the towers. In addition United Airlines Flight 93, which had departed Newark for San Francisco, and American Airlines Flight 77, when they departed Dulles for Los Angeles, were hijacked. Flight 77 with 64 people on board was diverted to Washington D.C. then piloted into the Pentagon building, killing everyone on board and 125 military personnel inside the building. Flight 93 with 44 people on board was also diverted toward Washington, but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overpower the terrorists on board.
September 12, 1923........Former Italian Dictator Benito Mussolini was rescued by German paratroopers on orders from Adolph Hitler. Mussolini was being held prisoner by Italian authorities following the collapse of the Fascist regime.
September 13, 1814.......The Battle of Fort Henry in Baltimore Harbor occurred , observed by Francis Scott Key aboard a ship. He watched the British attack overnight and at dawn saw the American flag still flying over the fort, inspiring him to write the verses which were later copied with the tune of a popular drinking song and became the U.S. National Anthem in 1911.
September 14, 1812.......Napoleon and his troops first entered Moscow as the retreating Russians set the city on fire. Napoleon found it was impossible to stay through the winter in the ruined city. He then began a retreat from Moscow which became one of the great disasters of military history. Fewer than 20,000 of the original 500,000 men with him survived the Russian campaign.
September 15, 1916.......Tanks were first used in combat, during the Allied offensive at the Battle of the Somme, in World War I.
September 16, 1620.......The Mayflower ship departed from England, bound for America with 102 passengers and a small crew. The ship weathered dangerous Atlantic storms and reached Provincetown, Massachusetts on November 21st. The Pilgrims disembarked at Plymouth on on December 26th.
September 17th, 1908.........The first fatality involving powered flight occurred as a biplane piloted by Orville Wright fell from a height of 75 feet, killing Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, his 26 year old passenger. A crowd of almost of nearly 2,000 spectators at Fort Myer, Virginia, observed the crash of the plane which was being tested for possible military use. Wright himself was seriously injured.
