Our program this week was presented by one of our own Kiwanian members, Emily Sousa. She is employed, at Texas State University, as an Athletic Support Psychologist, and specializes in the area of Mental Health within the athletic world. She explained that many mental health issues can arise due to high expectations placed internally and externally on the achievements of the athlete. The athlete may feel like a failure; placing unreachable expectations on his/herself, resulting in negative feelings, and poor self-esteem can be brought on by poor team interactions. In her job, she places a lot of emphasis on teambuilding, cohesion, as well as trust building amongst the players, and spends a great deal of time holding sessions with each athlete, individually or in groups, focusing on their strengths, and coping skills. Among these sessions she may teach ways to cope with stress or anxiety through breathing techniques or imagery. Emily finished her presentation explaining that you must have a solid sense of self, or it could be crippling on how one views themself. She explained that you need to practice the SFT approach. S= see it! F=Feel it! T= Trust it! Thank you, Emily! Awesome program!

6.Lon gave an update on the Veteran's Day Parade, and the Bicycle Brigade. Each year, the Kiwanis Float is decorated using pictures of former veterans. He emphasized that it is important to have full club participation, both in preparation of the event, and decorating the bicycles, participation during the parade, and close down after the parade. It is also very important to advertise the need for kid's participation in the bike brigade. Every year, the Kiwanis present a lucky girl and boy with a new bicycle. This year, the city has approved announcing these winners, when the float gets to the announcers stand. These winners will then claim their bikes at parades end.
7. Penny will be sending out a list of committees, chairmen, and committee members, on email, for any changes that need to be made. Please respond to the email. If we don't hear from you, we will go forward "as is".
