"GETTING OLDER ISN'T FOR WEAKLINGS!"
These two old senior citizens had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. They had hunted together, fished together, gone on trips together. As the years went by, they had limited their activities to a quiet game of cards. One day these two long time friends were playing cards, when one of them looked at the other and said, 'You know, I don't want you to get mad at me. I know we've been friends for a long time, but I just can't remember your name.' 'I've thought and thought, but I just can't remember it. Please tell me your name!'
His friend looked up from his cards and just glared at his friend. For at least 5 minutes, he just stared and glared at his long time friend. Finally, after a long period of glaring and staring, he said, 'How soon do you need to know'"

 I am real sorry that this did not get into last week's bulletin, but your editor just plumb forgot it. If you will remember back in December at our Christmas luncheon at San Marcos BBQ, we presented McBride Wilson with a special Plaque of Excell
lence, for his many years of being chairman of our Kiwanis camp, Camp Kiwah. Then at one of our Board meetings, a proposal was brought by Lon Shell to rename the camp in honor of McBride. Some suggestions were given, but the one that best fits the man and the situation is McBride Wilson Kiwanis Youth Camp, and so it was a done deal. Lone arranged to have these new signs made and they were displayed to the club last Thursday, April 16. (left). In the meantime, McBride figured that 30 years was just about long enough for him to maintain camp supervisor, so the new coordinator of the Camp is now Gary Strunk. The sign was put up by Lon, McBride and Gary, I believe last Thursday. We are so proud of our camp, and look forward to continuing to maintain it and keep it in great shape.

 And the winner for Big Bucks last Thursday was none other than our Treasurer, Randy Cook . There was only $2.00 in the jar, and he gave it all back to the Eliminate Project.

  Medical Explorers receives support check! Our Kiwanis Treasurer Randy Cook presents Medical Explorer advisor Charles Johnson, a support check for $1500.00 at last week's club meeting, April 23rd. The Medical Explorers, is a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America, where units, also known as "posts" are created to teach students about a specific career field. More than 20 years after Medical Explorer Post 4077 was created, Central Texas Medical Center is taking on the role as the lead sponsor for the group. The local Medical Explorer's group is led by Texas State University's former Chairman of Health Services Research Charles Johnson (left) who says this program is more extensive than others of it's kind.
The group organizes weekly speakers that cover the full spectrum of health care, including the allied health professions, administration, physician recruiting, public health, infectious diseases, epidemiology, bioterrorism and more. They also perform volunteer and mission work in cooperation with the San Antonio chapter of the Christian Medical & Dental Association making regular trips to cities cities along the Mexico border to provide medical aid. Charles Johnson says "a week doesn't go by where I don't see a career path change. I show them exciting altermatives in areas of medicine they never knew existed."

JUST A REMINDER!
The K-Kids meets this Tuesday morning, April 28, at 7:30am in the DeZavala School Library. Since the kids were enthusastic about collecting change in baby bottles to help out in The Eliminate Project, we plan to show a brief video about the project, and then hand each one a bottle for them to start saving. Let's try to have 4 or 5 club members come out for that

I don't know about anyone else, but I was very much moved with our program last week when Mike Shlimgen from "Project Healing Waters through Fly fishing" brought our program. I don't really think you had to be a veteran to appreciate how Mike and this organization has helped in so many ways to turn a young man or woman's life around when through their disability, where darkness & gloom seemed to have the upper hand. Through this organization, these veterans have been given a new lease on life. The one story that struck me the hardest was of the veteran that was blind, and was taught to tie a fishing fly, and then use it to catch a fish, and in order to "see" what it was, he felt all over the fish. He had a big smile on his face. What an accomplishment. If you would like to give a donation to "Project Healing Water", just go to www.projecthealingwaters.org. It will be much appreciated.

We have a very linteresting program coming up this coming week, Thursday, April 30th, which I believe will be, or ought to be of interest to all of us. John Polk is bringing TRISH WILDER who is a financial advisor with one of our Edward Jones Investment Companies. She is very knowledgeable about the market and stocks, bonds etc. We can always learn more about those things, especially with regards to the retirement years. I'm sure her advise would be, don't wait until you retire, start early. Come and learn what's going on in the financial world.

 April 24, 1800.......The Library of Congress was established in Washington, D.C. It is America's oldest federal cultural institution and the world's largest library. Among the 145 million items in its collections are more than 33 million books, 3 million recordings, 12.5 millions photographs, 5.3 million maps, 6 million pieces of sheet music and 63 million manuscripts. About 10,000 new items are added each day.April 25, 1967.......The first law legalizing abortion was signed by Colorado Governor Love, allowing abortions in cases in which a panel of three doctors unanimously agreed.
April 26, 1986........At the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine, an explosion caused a meltdown of the nuclear fuel and spread a radioactive cloud into the atmosphere, eventually covering most of Europe. A 3oo square mile area around the plant was evacuated. Thirty one persons were reported to have died while an additional thousand cases off cancer from radiation were expected. The plant was then encased in a solid concrete tomb to prevent the release of further radiation.
April 27, 1865......On the Mississippi River, the worst steamship disaster in U.S. history occurred as an explosion aboard the Sultana killed nearly 2,000 passengers, mostly Union soldiers who had been prisoners of war and were returning home.
April 28, 1789.......On board the British ship Bounty, Fletcher Christian led a mutiny against Captain William Bligh, setting him and 18 loyal crew members adrift in a 23 foot open boat. Christian sailed the Bounty back to Tahiti, eventually settling on Pitcairn island and burning the ship.
April 29, 1992.......Riots erupted in LA following the announcement that a jury in Simi Valley, California, had failed to convict four LA police officers accused in the videotaping beating of an African American man.
April 30, 1789........George Washington became the first U.S. President as he was administered the oath of office on the balcony of Wall and Broad Streets in New York City.
