The CEO was scheduled to speak at an importasnt convention, so he asked one of his employees to write him a punchy, 20 minute speech. When the CEO returned from the big event, he was furious.
"What's the idea of writing me an hour-long speech?" he demanded to know. "Half the audience walked out before I was finished."
The employee was baffled. "I wrote you a 20-minute speech," he replied. "I also gave you the two extra copies you asked for."

 Last Thursday, April 30, John Polk brought Trish Wilder from Edward Jones to speak to us about financial planning. It was great. Everyone needs to think of the future, and what they are going to need during the working years, as well as after retirement comes, So many times, we get started too late and retire too young, and we are not ready to get started on some other income producing job. This can be very frightening. Trish was quite thorough in her presentation, and answered the questions directly. In one of the brochures she handed out, it lists 3 common risks to your retirement strategy. #1. Plan for the Expected, or living longer than expected, or prepare for the unexpected. Life is not certain.#2. Have a good Health care/long term care. We may be feeling tip top now, but the unexpected can throw us for a loop.
#3. Consider thd real possibility that the market is not always going to go our way. It can slide up and down, and make sure your portfolio is diversified in such a way that the downs won't destroy your future dreams. Thanks Trish for being straightforward in your presentation.

  PROGRAM COMING UP THIS WEEK, THURSDAY, MAY 7, 2015 Do you remember back in February of this year, that 99.99% members of our club were working the Pancake and Silent Auction....except one, and that was Lon Shell. But he had a very good reason for not being there because he was in San Antonio at the Junior Agricultural Mechanical Project Show. He is going to be telling our club about this show through a power point presentation at our club meeting, Thursday, May 7th. You don't want to miss it.
The Junior Agricultural Mechanics project show is a unique contest held annually during the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
JAM goals are to encourage, recognize, facilitate and reward learning and the development of skills through the design, construction and exhibition of agricultural projects and/or Tractor Restoration. It is also a grand way to showcase the outstanding leadership, technical abilities and accomplishments of our Texas youth. Lon is well qualified to address this subject in detail as he is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus, (Ret); Agricultural Systems Management, Department of Agriculture, Texas State University. Bring a friend to this program.

 Since May 14 happens to fall on Graduation Day at the University, our club will have a Roundtable instead of a regular meeting. It will start at 11:00am and conclude at 12:00pm. Roundtables can be a lot of fun, and who knows we might even get something done. Plan to join us on the 14th. We'll be out before the onrush of graduates hit Grin's. |

  Kiwanis Scholarships will be awarded to 5 Seniors on May 6th, beginning at 1:30pm. It will be held in the SMHS Auditorium. Our club will invite the recipients to our club meeting on Thursday, May 21st, so they can be recognized and congratulated by our club, as well as give a brief speech as to what their life will be like after High School, and where they may be going for graduate studies.

 Last Tuesday morning, April 26, members of the K-Kids at Lorenzo DeZavala Elementary School were presented 30 plastic baby bottles to fill up with loose change and then bring them back to the school where Kayla Shook,(sitting on center bottom step) the school's K-Kids faculty sponsor will count the change and that money will then go towards our committment to the Eliminate Project. All of the K-Kids at DeZavala have been told what the Eliminate Project is and with great enthusiasm, they wanted to participate in ridding the world of Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. The K-Kids meet every 1st & 3rd Tuesday from 7:30am - 8:00am. They are very eager and raring to go with this project. Those who were there from our club was Chester Banks, Randy Cook & Del Brown. Thanks K-Kids, Kayla and DeZavala School for being a vital part of The Eliminate Project. We are so proud of you.

 HELPING THE K-KIDS PICK UP TRASH!
The K-Kids faculty advisor, Kayla Shook has asked if there would be a time very soon for our club to help the K-Kids pick up trash around DeZavala School. We have done this in the past. It really doesn't take too long, so between the school and our club, we have picked this Wednesday afternoon, May 13 at 2pm. We will have trash bags available so all you have to do is show up.....Remember: Wednesday, May 13th at DeZavala School. If there is a change, we will let you know.

 SAN MARCOS KIWANIS CLUB IS NOW ON FACEBOOK! (Your editor is running this article from last week's bulletin, because of it's importance to our club, and also to say that Sam Brannon has agreed to be our club's Public Relations Person, and as such he will be getting information from Kiwanis District and International that will be beneficial for our club. Thanks Sam for taking that position)
Sam Brannon took the lead and got our club on Facebook. Your editor doesn't know an awful lot about Facebook, but I do know that it is an excellent media tool to let the community know what is going on in our club. Remember, we are all about kids, and kids go on Facebook quite a bit, so Sam, we really appreciate you taking this on. Now here are some of his instructions:
He has just completed a first-pass set up on the Facebook page. Go to the link, "San Marcos Kiwanis Club" and click the "like" button. On Facebook pages this is the ultimate sign of your reach. When people click "like" on the page our posts,/mews will be included in their Facebook news feed, and our events will then be For instance, if we gather 300 "likes" that means 300 people will be notified of ouir upcoming Garage Sale, which has already been posted. Then when we "share" the post, it will appear on our own individual Facebook page timelines, and the post will show up in our friends 'news feed' We can literally reach thousands this way.
Sam will also be presenting a "policy" of sorts, for us to consider some best practices when using Facebook to interact with the community around us.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS FROM MAY1 - MAY 6
May 1, 1707.......Great Britain was formed from a union between England and Scotland. The union included Wales which had already been part of England since the 1500's. The United Kingdom kingdom today consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
May 2, 2011......U.S. Special Operations Forces killed Osama bin Laden during a raid on his secret compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The raid marked the culmination of a decade long manhunt for the elusive leader of the al-Qaeda terrorist organization based in the Middle East. Bin Laden had ordered the coordinated aerial attacks of September 11, 2001, in which four American passenger jets were hijacked then crashed, killing nearly 3,000 persons. Two jets had struck and subsequently collapsed the 110 story Twin of the World Trade Center in NY., while another struck the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. A fourth jet also headed for Washington had crashed into a field in Pennsylvania as passengers attempted to overpower the hijackers on board.
May 3, 1802.....Washington D.C. was incorporated as a City.
May 4, 1886......The Haymarket Square Riot occurred in Chicago after 180 kpolice officers advanced on 1,300 persons gathered in the square listening to speeches of labor activists and anarchists. A bomb was thrown. Seven policemen were killed and over 50 wounded. Four anarchists were then charged with conspiracy to kill, convicted and hanged while another committed suicide in jail.
May 5, 1865......Decoration Day was first observed in the U.S. with the tradition of decorqting soldiers' graves from the Civil War with flowers. The observance was later moved to May 30th and included American graves from WWI and WWII and became better known as Memorial Day. In 1971, Congress moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May, thus creating a three day holiday weekend.
May 6, 1937.....The German airship Hindenburg burst into flames at 7:20pm as it neared the mooring mast at Lakehurst, NJ, following a trans-Atlantic voyage. Thiry-six of the 97 passengers and crew were killed. The inferno was caught on film and also witnessed by a commentator who broke down amid the emotional impact and exclaimed, "Oh, the humanity!" The accident effectively ended commercial airship traffic.
