Rebecca Ybarra, Destination Services Director

PROGRAM: Rebecca Ybarra, the Destination Services Director for the San Marcos Tourist Information Center, gave a rundown on all the services and programs offered for tourists as well as for locals to enjoy all that San Marcos has to offer. They offer brochures and maps for getting around town to see San Marcos's sites and events, including the San Marcos River, shopping, concerts, parks, and the arts and culture. One of the programs that has livened up the town is the promotion of public art in the form of murals on the walls outside of buildings. These can be found all over the downtown area. There are thirty-seven different works of art around town.

She mentioned San Marcos has officially received designation as a "Bird City" by Texas Audubon and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. for enhancing and protecting their habitats.

An interesting shift occurred with the increased use of technology. Rebecca said much fewer people now actually come to the Visitor's Center as they can obtain information online. The majority come in to check on river conditions which has become more important since so much flooding has been occuring.

The Visitor's Center has a large and diverse involvement in the San Marcos community and tourism with all the amenities our town has to enjoy.
