The program next Thursday, May 15th will be the five Scholarship Recipients which our club selected this year. They will be invited to our club, and each will be given time to tell the club just what their plans are following graduation, where they might be attending for higher education.
Those whom the Scholarship Committee chose this year are: Erica Rodriguez-San; Edwin Ault, Julian Delarosa; Jesus Alvarez. and Luis Trejo.
Let's have a good turnout and congratulate these students.

This is a real privilege and a real treat. President Tracy has set up all of the details, and our club will be doing the serving, and preparation of the meal. The main entrée will be 'Creamy Chicken Ritz Casserole', with salad, dessert, and drink. All for $8.00. If you have never eaten at the Cock House, at the corner of C.M. May 12, 1937- - George VI was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. King George reigned until his death in 1952. He was succeeded by his daughter Elizabeth, the current reigning monarch.
May 13, 1846 - - At the request of President James K. Polk, Congress declared war on Mexico. The controversial struggle eventually cost the lives of 11,300 U,S, soldiers and resulted in the annexation of lands that became part of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah and Colorado. The war ended in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
May 14, 1796 - - Smallpox vaccine was developed by Dr. Edward Jenner, a physician in rural England. He coined the term vaccination for the new procedure of injecting a milder form of the disease into healthy persons resulting in immunity. Within 18 months, 12,000 persons in England had been vaccinated and the number of smallpox deaths dropped by two-thirds.
May 15,1972 - - George Wallace was shot while campaigning for the presidency in Laurel, Maryland. As a result, Wallace was permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
May 16, 1862 - - During the American Civil War, Union General Benjamin Butler, military governor of New Orleans, issued his "Woman Order" declaring that any Southern woman showing disrespect for Union soldiers or the U.S. would be regarded as a woman of the town, or prostitute. This and other controversial acts by Butler set the stage for his dismissal as military governor in December 1862.
May 17, 1792 - - Two dozen merchants and brokers established the New York Stock Exchange. In good weather they operated under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street. In bad weather they moved inside to a coffeehouse to conduct business.
May 18, 1998 - - In one of the biggest antitrust lawsuits of the 20th century, American software giant Microsoft Corporation was sued by the U.S. Federal Government and 20 state governments charging the company with using unfair tactics to crush competition and restrict choices for consumers. The lawsuits alleged Microsoft used illegal practices to deny personal computer owners the benefits of a free and competitive market and also alleged Microsoft extended its monopoly on operating systems to "develop a chokehold" on the Internet browser software market.
Great Turnout for Award ceremony last Friday.
It was a great turnout last Friday, when our Kiwanis Club distributed donated goodies to a new batch of Terrific Kids at DeZavala Elementary School. Certificates, coin purses, pens, rubber balls, drinking cups etc, all donated from our community or purchased from our Kiwanis store. The number of children was over 100 that were awarded, and the following Kiwanians were there to help: Randy Cook, Pam Cook, Del Brown, Gary Nelson, Garry White, Tracy Herman, John Polk, Francis Mendez and Rob Martin. That's what Kiwanis is all about - - all about kids!
Notice: The After Hours Session of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce will be held on May 18th, 2017 at the Hilton Garden Inn. The times will be 5:30pm - 7:00pm. Board of Directors Meeting
The quickly called Board meeting for last Thursday was canceled due to there was not a quorum present.
The regularly scheduled Board of Directors normally meets on the fourth Thursday of each month. Come to the meeting this week to get details about the upcoming Board meeting.

"Paying (or Working) for a Dead Horse"
Performing work for which payment has already been made; ergo, doing something which is no longer profitable. I have no doubt that the Greeks had a phrase for this, and the Egyptians before them, and so on back to the first time man worked for hire - - or at least to the first one who got paid in advance. Nothing is quite so irksome. The illusion, of course, is to that unfortunate man who at some remote period bought a horse to work his field only to have the animal die before the field was sown - - and the animal still to be paid for. A modern parallel is to buy a car on time, only to wreck it before the second payment has been made. Literary record of the English phrase has been traced back to the seventeenth century.

"Hamilton Pool Preserve"
Hamilton Pool Preserve is a natural pool that was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed due to massive erosion thousands of years ago. The pool is located about 23 miles west of Austin, Texas off Highway 71. Since the 1960's Hamilton Pool has been a popular summer swimming spot for Austin visitors and residents.
Hamilton Pool Preserve consists of 232 acres of protected natural habitat featuring a jade green pool into which a 50 toot waterfall flows.
The pool is surrounded by large slabs of limestone that rest by the water's edge; large stalactites grow from, the ceiling high above. The ceiling and surrounding cliffs of the grotto are home to moss, maidenhair fern and cliff swallows. The Ashe juniper (cedar) uplands of the preserve are home to the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.
