Last Week's program
Last program's program was brought by two of our Kiwanis members, Francis Mendez and Garry White, Both Garry and Francis have been instigational in getting a Circle K program off the ground at Texas State. It is truly beginning to materialize.
The picture to the right are two of the officers that are getting the club started - Cesanne-Lossing-Cann, who is the Vice President of the new infant club, and Alyssa-Jade Parker, who is the president. They came to our club along with their student guide, Erick Garza, and both Francis and Garry are our club's sponsor to their club. We wish them well, as they grow both in numbers and in service to the community.
The Kyle/Buda Kiwanis Club is Up and Running.
Cynthia Bentley, formerly of the San Marcos Club informed our club that there is going to be a special event on Thursday. October 18, 2018 at 6:30 PM to hear about the New Kyle/Buda Kiwanis Club of Texas. The goals and the importance of this new club to the community will be presented. It is going to be held at Buda Municipal Complex, 121 N. Main St, Buda, TX, 78610.
The regular meeting days for these two clubs will be, for the Kyle Club, they will be meeting on the 1st Thursday of each week at the Orchard Park of Kyle Senior Living Center, 4701 Ratcliffe, Kyle TX. They will meet at 12:00 noon.
The Buda Club will be meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each week at the address listed above for the meeting held this coming Thursday.
Well Well, will Miracles Happen. Your editor's name was called and he won $2.00. He decided to give them all back into Happy Dollars.
Thanks to Kelli and her crew, another October Dash 5K race turned out very nicely. The weather was a bit wet, but nothing that couldn't be handled. We had sixteen club members helping out: Kelli Whigham, Rhonda White, Doug & Jeanne Balkman, Randy & Pam Cook,Beverly Crumley, Andrew Gary , Gary Nelson, Del Brown, Charles Walts, Ted Breihan, Chester Banks, Moe Johnson, Frederick Case and Francis Mendez (who also ran).
We also had five Medical Explorers; Shannon Coker, Elizabeth Sher, Eyona Okundia, Christian Coronado, and Deborah Ohoregie.
There were also members of the newly organized Circle K Club at Texas State University; Erick, Garza, Kami Velarde, Kaden Hutton and Loraine Dempsey. There was also an individual from Texas State video taping for the Un8versity Bobcat Newsletter. We didn't get his name though.
There were over 70 runners, with Bronda Caste coming in first place as All Around Male, and Nikki Schnalbach coming in as the all around female.
Program for this coming Thursday, October 18th, 2016
Glen Rydl will be bringing the program this coming Thursday, and it will be either of the two executives for Hays County Food Bank, Denise Blok, who is the Executive Director for the Food Bank and Eleanor Oshan, who is the Program and Development leader for the Bank. Hopefully they will talk about the Turkey Tackling Hunger Program.
Club Family Club Picnic
After deliberation with our club officers, it was decided that the Picnic out at the camp will be cancelled for this coming Saturday. The weather report declares rain for that day, but because of all the rain we've already had, the ground will be muddy and very unpleasant.....so.....Let's think maybe of having something when the weather is more favorable, or maybe getting together as we have done in the past, at a favorite restaurant. After all, isn't fellowship really the name of the game?

October 12, 1960 - - During a debate over colonialism in the United Nations, Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev took off his shoe and pounded his desk repeatedly.
October 13, 1792 - - The cornerstone of the White House was laid by George Washington. The building, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, is three stories tall with over 100 rooms, and was designed by James Hoban. In November of 1800, President John Adams and his family moved in. The building was first known as the 'Presidential Palace.' but acquired the name 'White House' about 10 years after its completion. It was burned by British troops in 1814, then reconstructed, refurbished and reoccupied in 1817.
October 14, 1066 - - The Norman Conquest began with the Battle of Hastings in which King Harold II of England, the last of the Saxon kings, was defeated and killed by William of Normandy's troops.
October 15, 1946 - - Nazi leader Hermann Goering committed suicide by swallowing poison in his Nuremberg prison cell just hours before his scheduled hanging for war crimes.
October 16, 1701 - - Yale University was founded in Killingworth, Connecticut (as the Collegiate School of Connecticut). The school moved to New Haven in 1716. Two years later, the name was changed to Yale College to honor Elihu Yale, a philanthropist. In 1886, it became Yale University.
October 17-25, 1944 - - The Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, took place off the Phillipine Islands, during World War II in the Pacific. The battle involved 216 U.S. warships and 64 Japanese ships and resulted in the destruction of the Japanese Navy including the Japanese Battleship Musashi, one of the largest ever built.
October 18, 1685 - - The Edict of Nantes was revoked by King Louis XIV of France thus depriving Protestant Huguenots of all religious and civil liberties previously granted to them bh Henry IV in 1598.

"This comes from boar hunting in which the noblemen hired workers to walk through the woods beating the branches and making noises to get the animals towards the hunters. Boars were dangerous animals with razor sharp teeth (you really didn't want to meet one-to-one, especially with no weapon). So the unarmed workers avoided the dense undergrowth where the boar might be and beat around it, rather than going into it. What Do we Know about the History of our 52 state flags. How About New Mexico
"The official state flag of New Mexico was chosen from a flag competition in 1920 (the competition was held to replace an older New Mexico flag) The winner was Dr. Harry Mera, a doctor and archeologist from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Dr. Mera's design is an interpretation of an ancient Sun symbol called a Zia(this symbol was found on a water ja made in the late 1800's in Zia Pueblo). Since four is a sacred number for the Zia, there are four rays coming from each side of the stylized Sun. The colors red and yellow are used because they were the colors of the flag of the Spanish conquistadors who went to New Mexico in the early 1500's"
