She got up, dusted her self off and saw that her dress was now dirty and had a little tear. She started running again, still praying, 'Dear God, please don't let me be late.' But this time she added, 'But please don't push me, either'"

Thank you Tracy, for bringing Connie Ulmer to our club meeting last Thursday. You know even though we have thousands and maybe millions of people, (including your editor) who are on Medicare, you just never know everything about it. Connie was very open with all of the questions which our club threw at her, and she fielded them beautifully. I think that most people would much rather remain young both in body as well as in mind, but that's not the way the ball bounces. We are all getting older, and should be grateful that when you reach that golden age of 65, that Medicare is there to pick up the loose ends. It's probably not perfect, but frankly, I'm glad I have Medicare. Connie was not able to field all the questions, but she answered a lot in my mind. Thanks Connie and Tracy.

Our p rogram this coming week, Thursday, April 16th will be brought by Francis Mendez, who will be presenting one of our own members, Garry White, who has some very interesting experiences while teaching Germans in Germany. One day last year, He thrilled us with Part I of his travelogue, and this week, he will be presenting Part II.
 Anyone who has been to Germany, as has your editor, the country is a fascinating country. We all look forward to Garry's presentation.

This last Thursday, Glen Rydle brought his wife, Mary Lou; Del Brown bought his wife, Marie, Beverly Crumley brought her almost brand new grandson, Caleb; and Todd Salmi, Associate pastor of First United methodist Church visited us on his own. "New member enrollment fees are as follows: Kiwanis International - $50.00.....Texas Oklahoma
District5 new member fees - graduated from $26.50 for members joining in October to
$3.00 for members joining in September. New members will be expected to pay $40.00 of the total new member fees, with the San Marcos Kiwanis Club paying the balance of the total new member fees."
Last Thursday, as our first order of business, our club approved unanimously the revised by-laws dealing with membership fees. Everyone had an opportunity to read through the revision as suggested by Kiwanis International, Rob Martin made the motion to approve, Sam Brannon seconded it, and it passed with a show of hands.

 In 1940, one year after the Kiwanis International Foundation was established as a legal entity, Walter Zeller,
(top right) made the first donation: 25 Canadian silver dollars that he hoped would turn into the foundation's nest egg. His dream came true. Auctioned for US$625, his coins launched the Kiwanis International Foundation's worldwide service efforts. Thousands of donors later, the foundation has grown into a multi-million dollar organization that awards grants to Kiwanis clubs and underwrites life altering worldwide service projects.
On behalf of the Eliminate Project, the Foundation is proud to honor Walter Zeller's commitment to service by creating the Walter Zeller Fellowship. This is a very special opportunity designed exclusively for The Eliminate Project. You can become a Walter Zeller Fellow by making a one time gift or two-year consecutive pledge of US$1,250 to The Eliminate Project. All Walter Zeller Fellows will receive a special medallion, lapel pin and certificate.

  What a real blessing our club had last Thursday, April 9th, when two Walter Zeller Fellowship Awards were handed out to two persons, Mary Lou Rydl,, (L) wife of member, Glen Rydl. Glen purchased this award for his wife.The second Zeller award was purchased by an anonymous donor and presented (R) to Chester Banks. Chester is one of our members that has been in the club the longest.
Our Division 38 Lt. Governor, Rob Martin, and Club President, Del Brown participated in the presenting of these awards. The Walter Zeller Fellowship was designed exclusively for the Eliminate Project, in an effort to 'eliminate' Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from the face of the earth. Congratulations to both of these persons who is making this elimination a little bit closer.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS FOR THE COMING WEEK...APRIL 10th - 16th
April 10, 1942........During WWII in the Pacific, the Bataan Death March began as American and Filipino prisoners were forced on a six day march from an airfield on Bataan to a camp near Cahanatuan. Some 76,000 Allied POWs including 12,000 Americans were forced to walk 60 miles under a blazing sun without food or water to the POW camp, resulting in over 5,000 American deaths.
April 11, 1814.......Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated as emperor of France and was banished to the island of Elba.
April 12, 1861........The bombing of Fort Sumter began, starting the Civil War.
April 12, 1945.........President Franklin D. Roosevelt died.
April 13, 1743.........Thomas Jefferson was born in Albermarle County, Virginia. He was an author, inventor, lawyer, politician, architect and one of the fiAnest minds of the 1700's. He authored the American Declaration of Independence and later served as the 3rd US President from 1801-1809.
April 14, 1828..........The first dictionary of American-style English was published by Noah Webster as the American Dictionary of the English Language.
April 14, 1865..........President Abraham Lincoln was shot and mortally wounded while watching a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford's Theater in Washington. He was taken to a nearby house and died the following morning at 7:22 a.m.
April 15, 1912.........In the icy waters off Newfoundland, the luxury liner Titanic with 2,224 persons on board sank at 2:27 a.m. after striking an iceberg just before midnight. Over 1,500 persons drowned while 700 were rescued by the liner Carpathia which arrived about two hours after Titanic went down.
April 16, 1862.........Congress abolished slavery in the District of Columbia and appropriated $1 million to compensate owners of freed slaves.

 SOPHOMORE OF THE YEAR AWARD
Last November, 2014, our club handed out ten applications for Sophomore of the Year, 2014-2015. We had ten applications, and our Lt. Governor of Division 38, submitted one name from our Division to represent our Division in the Texas/Oklahoma District competition. Then out of all the applicants from the other Division, our nominee was selected to receive one of the scholarships upon graduation. Our nominee that went forward and was selected as one of the winners was Sophomore, KORBIN WEESE. He has been notified of this, and will be awarded a plaque from our District on Monday evening, April 27th up at the SMHS. This is quite an honor and Korbin is to be congratulated for being selected. He will be one of several to receive a scholarship amount upon graduating from high school.
