Our program for this coming week, March 28th, 2018
Gary Strunk will be bringing our current Mayor, Jane Hughson to speak to our club about what is going on in our city under her administration.
Mayor Hughson was elected as Mayor of San Marcos on Nov 6, 2018. She was previously elected to the San Marcos City Council on Nov. 4, 2014 for a three year term in Place 4, re-elected for a three year term on Nov. 7, 2017, and also served on City Council from May 1996 to May 2002.
Mayor Hughson is a long term San Marcos resident and a Southwest Texas State University graduate. She worked at TSU for 33 years before retiring in 2015.
Currently Mayor Hughson serves on Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) Executive Committee and the following policy committees: Capital Area Emergency Commu9nications District, Capital Area Economic Development District, Inc. Capital Area Regional Transportation Planning Organization, Central Texas Clean Air Coalition. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Alliance Water Authority and is a member of the boards of the Hays Central Appraisal District and the Greater San Marcos Partnership.
Members of our club are invited to bring at least one visitor to our noon meeting to hear our mayor talk about the importance of service clubs like our Kiwanis club within our city. Last week's bulletin outlined many of the significant activities that our club is involved in throughout the year. Let's have a great representation for this coming week's noon meeting.
"A New Twist for Our Weekly Riddles"
You know that every week, someone draws someone's name and wins Big Bucks. ( if you have your pin on) Sometime you get a large amount, sometime you get a small amount. I believe in Riddles, so each week at our noon meeting, we will have a new 'gimick'. Guess the riddle I give that day, and you get a $1 from me. Don't guess it, and I give that dollar to the Happy Dollar fund. This is just between those who are at the meeting, so don't miss it. You won't know what the riddle is until the day of our meeting. March 22, 1972 - - The Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. Senate and then sent to the states for ratification. The ERA, as it became known, prohibited discrimination on the basis of gender, stating, 'Equality or rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex,' and that 'the Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.' Although 22 of the required 38 states quickly ratified the Amendment, opposition arose over concerns that women would be subject to the draft and combat duty, along with other legal concerns. The ERA eventually failed (by 3 states) to achieve ratification despite an extension of the deadline to June 1982.

March 26, 1979 - - The Camp David Accord ended 30 years of warfare between Israel and Egypt Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the treaty of mutual recognition and peace, fostered by U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
March 27, 1977 - - The worst accident in the history of civil aviation occurred as two Boing 747 jet collided on the ground in the Canary Islands, resulting in 570 deaths.
March 28, 1979 - - Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident occurred in which uranium in the reactor core overheated due to the failure of a cooling valve. A pressure relief valve then stuck causing the water level to plummet, threatening a catastrophic nuclear meltdown. The accident resulted in the release of radioactive steam into the atmosphere, and created a storm of controversy over the necessity and safety of nuclear power plants.

History of the Arkansas State Flag
"Designed by Ms Willie K. Hocker of Wabbaseka, Arkansas and adopted in 1913, the Arkansas flag features 25 stars to show that Arkansas was the 25th state admitted to the United States.
The three blue stars have three meanings: 1. Arkansas belonged to three countries (France, Spain, and the United States) before attaining statehood. 2. 1803 was the year of the Louisiana Purchase when the land that is now Arkansas was acquired by the United States.
3. Arkansas was the third state created from the purchase by the United States, after Louisiana and Missouri.
The large star above ARKANSAS symbolizes the Confederacy which it was a part of from 1861-1865, and the diamond formed by the 25 stars represents it was the first diamond-producing state.
