Camp McBride Wilson Clean Up and Club Picnic!
Just a reminder of our Camp Clean-up/Picnic set for Saturday, November 4. beginning at 10am for the cleanup, followed by a BBQ picnic starting at 12:00 noon. For the last two weeks now, a sheet has been passed around seeing who all is going to be there. Come to club meeting this Thursday and sign up if you haven't already. We would like a good crowd
Once again our October Dash was a Huge Success!
The weather was perfect, 19 Kiwanis members were there to set up signs, tables, awards, and everything else that was necessary to make the runners feel welcome and glad they came. We had 42 runners, we started on time, everyone pitched in and had packets ready, registrations ready, donuts ready (until they were all eaten), and even tacos donated for after the race for runners and club members together.
There weren't as many Halloween costumes worn as we have had in the past, but John Polk was Batman, Andrew Gary came out in a ghoulish mask, and Del had his traditional bone on his head.
The Kiwanis members who came out to help were Gary Nelson, Doug Balkman, John Polk, Randy Cook, Pam Cook, Beverly Crumley, Cynthia Bentley, Rhonda White, Gary Strunk, Kelli Whigham, Steve Whigham, Charles Walts, Andrew Gary, Del Brown, Moe Johnson, Ted Breihan, Francis Mendez and Tracy Herman.
The photo to the left shows the 42 runners starting on their run. The first place runner in the race was Keaton Additor who came in at 21 minutes and 36 seconds. The second place runner was McKenzie Swan who came in at 23:00.
There were many categories in which awards were given. Our President Doug Balkman did an excellent job of announcing throughout the race and Rhonda White and Kelli Whigham gave out awards to the winners in the various age categories. Thanks to Moe Johnson, who rode his bicycle along the route, leading the runners out and back. Thanks to Kelli Whigham and her committee for putting the race together. As always, the money raised in this race will go towards kid's activities.
K-Kid's Induction Ceremony
Last Friday afternoon, 8 Kiwanians met over at DeZavala Elementary School to once again welcome over 40 children into the K-Kids Kiwanis program. Brittany Antonelli is the school's sponsor for the existing K-Kids club. Over 40 children were inducted into the club and Doug Balkman, president of our local Kiwanis Club is presenting the K-Kid's annual support check for $500.00 to be used in the children's programs. The School Principal, Elena SanchezVillanueva is receiving the check with tons of gratitude.
Club members that attended the Induction Ceremony were Randy Cook, Pam Cook, Doug Balkman, Gary Strunk, Charles Johnson, Frederick Case, Cynthia Bentley and Del Brown.

Program for this coming Thursday!
Cynthia Bentley will be bringing the program this coming Thursday. There is a lot going on in Kyle, TX, and so she is bringing some individuals from the City Manager's office in Kyle to tell us what all is happening in Kyle. Kyle is our neighbor and it is definitely going through some significant changes. We also are desirous to start some Kiwanis Clubs in our nearest northern neighbor. Let's have a great crowd to see what's happening.

October 20, 1944 - - During World War II in the Pacific, General Douglas McArthur set foot on Phillipine soil for the first time since his escape in 1942, fulfilling his promise, "I Shall Return!"
October 21, 1805 - - The Battle of Trafalgar took place between the British Royal Navy and the combined French and Spanish fleets. The victorious British ended the threat of Napoleon's invasion of England. British naval hero Admiral Horatio Nelson was mortally wounded aboard his ship Victory!
October 22, 1962 - - President John F. Kennedy appeared on television to inform Americans of the existence of Russian missiles in Cuba. The President demanded their removal and announced a naval quarantine of Cuba. Six days later, the Russians announced they would remove the weapons. In return, the U.S. later removed missiles from Turkey!
October 23, 1983 - - Terrorists drove a truck loaded with TNT into the U.S. and French headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, exploding it and killing 241 U.S. Marines and 58 French paratroopers!
October 24, 1929 - - "Black Thursday" occurred in the New York Stock Exchange as nearly 13 million shares were sold in panic selling. Five days later "Black Tuesday" saw 116 million shares sold.
October 25, 1854 - - During the Crimean War, the Charge of the Light Brigade occurred as Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against the Russians at Balaclava. Of 673 British cavalrymen taking part in the charge, 272 were killed. The Charge was later immortalized in the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson!
October 26, 1825 - - The Erie Canal opened as the first major man-made waterway in America, linking Lake Erie with the Hudson River, bypassing the British-controlled lower St. Lawrence. The canal cost over $7 million and took eight years to complete!

1. West Virginia is the only state in the Union to have acquired its sovereignty by proclamation of the President of the United States!

3. Mother's Day was first observed at Andrews Church in Grafton on May 10, 1908!
4. West Virginia has the oldest population of any state. The median age is 40!
5. Jackson's Mill is the site of the first 4-H Camp in the United States!

10. The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville is the second highest steel arch bridge in the United States. The bridge is also the longest steel arch bridge (1700 feet) in the world. Every October on Bridge Day, the road is closed and individuals parachute and bungee cord jump 876 feet off the bridge. It is West Virginia's largest single day event and attracts about 100,000 people each year
"America the Beautiful
The Seneca Cavern Tour is approximately 45 minutes and 1 mile of trail. The caverns are located in on Rt. 33 & 28, Riverton, West Virginia. There are quite a few steps as you'll descend 165 feet below ground, but the pathways are clear and maintained. The entire trail is lit and a guide will lead the way. Venturing beneath the green earth into the dark, cool, living cave is exciting and enchanting. Rocks and minerals shaped by millions of years of water flow, which is still present will inspire awe and wonder. There are no lights, except those that tourist take in and some climbing is required. The Stratosphere Cavern tour is for those with a spirit for adventure that are 12 years of age or older. This unique experience requires bravery and skill and is well worth the effort. Enjoy it!

"How Do Three-Way Light Bulbs Work? How Do the Bulbs "know" at which intensity to Shine?"
"Each three-way light bulb contains two filaments. Let's take as an example the popular 50/100/150 watt three-way bulb. When you turn the switch to the first setting, the lower wattage (50-watt) filament lights. When you turn to the next setting, the 100-watt filament lights and the 50-watt filament turns off. When you turn the switch for the third time, both the 50- and the 100 watt filaments light. This explains why the highest wattage rating for a three-way bulb is always the sum of the two lower wattage figures.
James Jensen, of the General Electric Lighting Business Group, is quick to explain that three-ways will work only in sockets designed to accept this type of bulb. While the three-way bulb, like conventional bulbs, makes contact in the socket through its screw shell and through an eyelet contact at the bottom of the base, it also contains a third feature. Says Jensen: 'In addition, there is a contact ring surrounding the eyelet. This ring contacts a small post contact in the socket. Sometimes, a three-way bulb will flicker or fail to light on all settings. This is often due to poor (or no) contact in the socket. Sometimes merely tightening the bulb in the socket will remedy this."
"As Mad as Hops"
Confoundedly irate; mad enough to bite nails; roaring mad. Although 'as thick as hops' has a literal background, referring either to the density of the hedges or thickets of hop vines as grown in southern England especially, or to the close growth of the cones on the vines, and although 'as fast as hops' pertains to the rapid growth of the hop vine, this present expression has no such relationship. Some distinguished individual, probably American - - wholly unknown now, but with a sly bit of punning humor in his make-up-----coined it some seventy or seventy-five years ago by giving a slight twist to the well known 'hopping mad,' so mad, irate, or angry that one fairly dances or hops around, sputtering with rage. The first occurrence in print was in a story by an unnamed writer in October 1884, issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, It's a story about a youngster called Gus who is annoyed with a pupil who is teasing the teacher.
