San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, March. 21, 2024
This week we were honored with guests Corey Wheeler of the San Marcos Lion's Club and Bill Pennington, Kristin's father.

REPORTS:
Lon:
Lon praised Glen for his arriving early to the meeting to get everything set up ahead of time.

Lon also mentioned that some of the work needed to be done at the camp has been accomplished but more is needed. Another work day is scheduled for March 30th from 9:00 a.m. to around lunchtime.

Rhonda:
March birthdays were celebrated for Del Brown, Jennifer Richmond, Paul Sutphen, and Kristi Dame. Kelli and Rhonda brought banana pudding for a change from cake and cupcakes. Normally the word "decadent" is associated with fantastic chocolate desserts. I have to proclaim this banana pudding as definitely decadent. Rich, creamy, flavorful and yummy. Thanks so much!

Rhonda reported that the calendar is updated so be sure to check it out on the San Marcos Kiwanis Club website to stay informed.

A reminder that the Social is scheduled at Chuy's on March 27th. Rhonda took a head count at the meeting so reservations can be made. If you were not at the meeting, let her know ASAP if you plan to go.

The Clay Shoot on April 27th could use more raffle items, sponsors, and teams.

Rick:
Rick volunteered to help at one of the Texas State Track and Field Meets as members from their team and the coach were such a great help at Pancake Day. Please see the links again posted if you are interested.
The first one is already in progress but you might still be able to help out.

PROGRAM:

Kelli introduced Peter Baen, the current President of Rotary Club of San Marcos.  He comes from a military family where he graduated from high school in Germany and went on the attend Texas State University (called Southwest Texas State at the time.) During a trip to Ecuador, he was hit by a drunk driver which resulted in his ending up in jail. The Rotary Club in Ecuador interceded on his behalf and was able to get him released. He made a pledge to support the Rotarians and someday lead the San Marcos division which he has now realized by becoming the 2023/2024 president. He spent a number of years on a Little League Board and School Board plus teaching so has much experience with working with youth.

An indication of how dynamic Peter is, I was unable to get a photo of him that did not have some part of him moving which accounts for the blurry image. A whirlwind of energy.

Peter mentioned so many things that I can only hit the highlights.

The motto for the Rotary Club is "Service above Self." This phrase is instilled in K-5th graders in a program the Rotary Club sponsors called "EarlyAct FirstKnight" (EAFK). It is a social emotional learning and character building program for elementary and middle school students. The purpose is to teach youth how to be responsible, serviced-oriented people in their community by emphasizing six character commitments.

The Rotary Club is also greatly involved in helping to eradicate poiio worldwide through vaccines; having a Youth Exchange Program; and offering scholarships and grants along with working to provide aid for many other needs.

The Rotary Club has 1.2 million members worldwide and is the only non-sovereign country within the United Nations.

At the end of the program, Lon emphasized that having different service clubs speak to Kiwanis members is to show how and where the clubs can particpate together to help the community.
