The Program Last Week was a Wonderful Eye Opener
Deborah Carter, Adult Programmer from the San Marcos Public Library gave a very thorough and eye-opening summary of what is going on in our public Library that will appeal to adults. For example here are just a few examples that are formed for the month of September: Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15)...Chess Night, (Thursday, Sept. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30pm)….Yarn in the Community...like to knit or sew or crochet, (Wednesdays, Sept 12 & 26, 6pm - 7:30pm); Museum Masterpieces London's National Gallery (Wednesday in September 10:30-11:45)...Philosophy Dialogues, (Wednesdays 4:30to 5:30 pm)….Hill Country Trees (Thursday, Sept 27 6:00 pm to 7:00pm)…...50+ Facebook for Seniors at the Activity Center, (Wednesday, Sept 10..10:am to 12:00pm). These are just a few programs scheduled for September. Stop in the library and pick up the complete scheduled of all the wonderful things that are happening for adults. Thanks to Jeanne Balkman for bringing Deborah and sharing this with our club.

Program for this coming Week
Garry White be bringing a most unusual program to our club this coming Thursday. You will not want to miss it.
In June and July 2018, a widely publicized cave rescue successfully extracted members of a junior football team trapped in Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Twelve members of the team, aged eleven to seventeen, and their 25 year old assistant coach entered the cave on 23 June after football practice. Shortly afterwards, heavy rains partially flooded the cave, trapping the group inside.
The rescue effort involved more than 10,000 people, including over 100 divers, many rescue workers, representatives from about 100 governmental agencies, 900 police officers and 2,000 soldiers and requirted ten police helicopters, seven police ambulances, more than 700 diving cylinders and the pumping of more than a billion litres of water out of the caves. Be sure and not miss it this Thursday, August 30th.

Interclub meeting very successful
John Polk, Pam Cook, Chester Banks and Kelli Whigham attended an Interclub session over with the Lockhart club last
Tuesday, and it was a very successful trip. Interclub trips are a valuable asset to any club. Glad you all went gang!
San Marcos Kiwanis Board Meeting.
The August Board of Directors will meet this coming Thursday, August 30th, in the Conference Room at CTMC, at 5:00pm. See you there!
Putting Up Flags on Labor Day
Don't forget that September 3rd is Labor Day and flags are to be put up. As always, meet at Ted's place by 7:00am to put them up and then take them down between 4:30pm & 5:00pm. Thanks for all those who are doing this.

August 24, 1814 - - During the War of 1812, Washington D.C., was invaded by British forces that burned the Capital, the White House and most other public buildings along with a number of private homes. The burning was in retaliation for the earlier American burning of York (Toronto)!
August 25, 1918 - - American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Considered one of the finest conductors in American music, his works included West Side Story, On the Town, and the opera, Candide.
August 26, 1873 - - American inventor Lee De Forest was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa. He held hundreds of patents for inventions, and was also a pioneer in the creation of wireless radio broadcasting and television!
August 27, 1865 - - Charles Dawes was born in Marietta, Ohio. He served as U.S. Vice President from 1925-29, and is best remembered for his 'Dawes Plan" for German reparations following World War I. He received the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize.
August 28, 1963 - - The March on Washington occurred as over 250,000 persons attended a Civil Rights rally in Washington, D.C., at which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, made his now famous I Have a Dream speech.
August 29, 1792 - - In one of the worst maritime disasters, 900 men drowned on the British battleship Royal George. As the ship was being repaired, a gust of wind allowed water to flood into open gun ports. The ship sank within minutes.
August 30, 1901 - - Civil rights leader Roy Wilkins was born in St. Louis, Missouri. The grandson of a Mississippi slave, he was active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

"Against his better judgment, the big game hunter is talked into taking both his wife AND his mother-in-law along on one of his expeditions.
It does not go well. The mother-in-law is, if anything, harder to get along within the wilds than she was in the city. And to make matters worse, she won't even abide by the simple camp rules designed to keep the safari safe.
