"A young man moved away from his parents to become a student. Proudly showing off his new apartment of his friends late night, he led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong.
"What 's the big brass gone?" one of his guests asked.
"It's not a gong. It's a talking clock," the man replied.
"A talking clock?" asked his astonished friend.
"Yup",replied the student.
"How's it work?" the 2nd guest asked, squinting at it.
"Watch," the student replied. He picked up a hammer, gave the gong an ear-shattering pound and stepped back.
The three stood looking at one another for a moment. Suddenly, someone on the other side of the wall screamed:
"You idiot, its ten past three in the morning!"

 A MESSAGE FROM JOHN R. BUTTON, OUR 2014-2015 kIWANIS INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
Dear Club Members:
I hope your club plans to be represented during the House of Delegates at the 2015 Kiwanis International convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. We have a lot of important decisions to make that will impact Kiwanis' future, and it's important that every club has a voice. Convention delegates will discuss the following proposed amendments in Indianapolis that would:
1. Adjust Kiwanis International dues to be $52 per member in Tier A, $34 per member in Tier B; and $23 per member in Tier C (effective Oct 1, 2015)
2. Provide that Kiwanis International dues may be adjusted annually by no more than five percent (5%) of the previous year's amount (effective Oct 1, 2016)
3. Provide than Kiwanis International will approve and oversee foundations, charitable funds, and other entities affiliated with Kiwanis International.
4. Provide that voting for Kiwanis International business (elections, amendments, resolutions) will be conducted online rather than at the Kiwanis International convention.
5.Allow greater flexibility in club meeting frequency and clarify provisions regarding club satellites.
7. Provide that, if a governor cannot attend a council meeting, the district may select any district officer to attend in the governor's place.
8. Provide that the final date for district conventions will be September 25, rather than September 15.
9. Allow district vice governors to be delegates-at-large at Kiwanis International convention.
10. Permanently adopt corporate membership.
11. This lyear, delegates will also consider a new administrative resolution plus reports on two previous administrative resolutions adopted by previous Houses of Delegates on the topics of new forms of membership and online voting.
Plan to enjoy a great convention and be part of important discussions that will shape Kiwanis International's next 100 years.

  Don't forget that we are going to have a Roundtable this coming Thursday, May 14th. It will start at 11:00am and conclude at 12:00pm. Roundtables can be a lot of fun, and who knows we might even get something done. Plan to join us on the 14th. We'll be out before the onrush of graduates hit Grin's. |

 Since your editor was out of town during last week's program, he cannot give first hand comments on it, but considering that Lon Shell was well versed in the JAM Show (Junior Agricultural & Mechanical Show), I know that it was a great presentation. Also considering that Lon has been in charge of this show for several years, we definitely are going to excuse him from not being in two places at the same time....Pancake Day and JAM. Hmmmmmm, that doesn't sound like a bad menu for next year's Pancake Day....pancakes, sausage and jam!Anyway, I heard from very reliable sources that Lon did an excellent job with his power point presentation. Thanks Lon.

 SCHOLARSHIPS GIVEN TO FIVE GRADUATING SENIORS. Last Wednesday afternoon,May 6th, President Del Brown was privleged to hand our 5 $1000 scholarships to students that had applied for a scholarship from our Kiwanis Club. These were then gone over quite thoroughly by our Scholarship Committee, and from those applications the committee selected 5 students based on their outstanding Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Aspirations. They are: (L-R) Ariel Koska, Lena Sauer, Emily Holmes, Jeffrey Ault & Jacob McGee They have been invited to be our guest at our Kiwanis Meeting, Thursday, May 21st. There they will each make a five minute presentation and talk about their goals and accomplishments and something about where they will be going following graduation from SMHS. Lets have a good turnout and welcome them.

  We know that we have plenty of Terrific Kids at DeZavala Elementary School. Well here's a wonderful chance to show them how much we appreciate them. We need at least 10 club members to come to the DeZavala Cafeteria on FRIDAY AFTERNOON, MAY 22 AT 2PM,(come a little early so you can pick which "goodie" you want to hand out to these terrific kids.) These kids are terrific because they love to come to school, they love to pay attention, they do what the teacher tells them, They love to behave, in other words, they are just like what the word "TERRIFIC" means. We love em'. Let's show that we love em' by being a part of his important gathering.

 WE NEED YOUR PRESENCE AT DEZAVALA SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 13. If you signed up last Thursday, May 7, and agreed to help pick up trash, lets all meet at 1:30pm at DeZavala Elementary School , because the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be there at 1:45pm to present the school with a large check as a token of thanks for donating such a large amount of money during their project, "Pennies for Patients., which our K-Kids sponsored. Our K-Kids's fourth grade class raised almost $2900 dollars themselves ,in loose change. Kayla Shook, our K-Kids faculty advisor is their teacher and She would love to see as many Kiwanians there for the check presentation as possible, and then if the weather is tolerable, we can pick up trash afterwards. If it is raining on Wednesday, then we can reschedule, but let's have as many Kiwanian club members as can to come out for the check presentation. It probably will be held in the cafeteria, so lets all meet in the main office and then go from there. When you show up for things like this, it lets the school and the community that we are very interested in what they are doing.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED THE WEEK OF MAY 7 - 14May 7, 1915......The British passenger ship Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland, losing 1,198 of its 1,924 passengers, including 114 Americans. The attack hastened neutral American's entry into World War I.
May 8, 1945......A second German surrender ceremony was held in Berlin. Soviet Russia leader Josef Stalin had refused to recognize the German surrender document signed a day earlier at Reims. This time, German Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed the surrender document which declared, as did the first, that hostilities would end as of 12:01 a.m. on May 9th.
May 9, 1754.......First United States newspaper cartoon was published in Benjamin Franklin's "Pennsylvania Gazette"
May 10, 1889......A riot erupted outside the Astor Place Opera House in New York as British actor, William Charles Macready performed inside. Angry crowds revolted against dress requirements for admission and against Macready's public statements on the vulgarity of American life. The mob then shattered theater windows. Troops were called out and ordered to fire, killing 22 and wounding 26.
May 11, 1862........To prevent its capture by Union forces advancing in Virginia, the Confederate Ironclad Merrimac was destroyed by the Confederarte Navy. In March, the Merrimac had fought the Union Ironclad Monitor to a draw. Naval warfare was thus changed forever, making wooden ships obsolete.
May 12, 1937.......George VI was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. King George reigned until his death in 1952. He was suceeded by his daughter, Elizabeth, the current reigning monarch.
May 13, 1981........Pope John Paul II was shot twice at close range riding in an open automobile in St. Peter's Square in Rome. Two other persons were also wounded. An escaped terrorist, already under sentence of death for the murder of a Turkish journalist, was immediately arrested and was later convicted of attempted murder. The Pope recovered and later held a private meeting with the would-be-assassin and then publicly forgave him.
May 14, 1796.......Smallpox was developed by Dr. Edward Jenner, a physician in rural England. He coined the term vaccination for rthe new procedure of injecting a milder form of the disease into healthy persons resulting in immunity. Within 18 months, 12,000 persons in England had been vaccinated and the number of smallpox deaths dropped by two-thirds.

 MCBRIDE WILSON KIWANIS YOUTH CAMP CLEAN UP DAY!
Our camp Coordinator, Gary Strunk announced on April 30th that it's time for another clean up day out at our camp. It has been set for for this coming Saturday, May 16, around 8am. This will also give us a chance to see how the new signs marking our new camp name look. We need a bunch with mowers, weedeaters, and any other equipment you might have. Remember our newly owned tractor will be in full swing. Don't know who the driver is going to be, but I think we can guess. Let's have a great turnout. IMPORTANT!....Another reason for wanting it clean, is there is going to be a special Eagle Scout awarded to Robbie Woodworth, who will be receive his award on Saturday, June 6th. We want the camp clean and presentable because Robbie's Eagle Scout project was to build a new pump house which was badly needed.

 FLAG RENEWALS......IMPORTANT!!
Our Treasurer, Randy Cook tells us that only about 1/3 of our flag customers have mailed in their renewal for this new year. Have you contacted the customers that you contracted TO put up flags at their places of business . They might need to be reminded that we are only two weeks away from our first Flag Day. If you arranged to put a flag up at one of our many businesses, please drop by and remind them to mail in their renewal money. It's very important that we receive that money before we put up our flags on Memorial Day. Remember that money is designated money for the Children's Summer Reading Program.
