"Kiwanian of the Month for July 2018
Last Thursday, Pres. Doug surprised everyone by announcing the 'Kiwanian of the Month for July'. It was no surprise though when John Polk's name was called and he went forward to be crowned with this very prestigious award. John, throughout his entire membership has dealt with and overcome numerous health issues, which never slowed him down one bit. John is the kind of 'guy' that not only does he deal with his handicaps, but makes anyone he talks with to feel better about their own difficulties. John is the most 'upbeat' man in our club, and perhaps in the whole world. You will never see him without a smile on his face and an 'ultra-positive' attitude. Everything that John does throughout the many offices he has held, he did with optimistic perfection. He is involved with every project our club takes on, and has held many offices in our club, including secretary, and Lt. Governor. 'Way to go John'!

Last Week's Program
Kelli Whigham brought Rhonda White to present last week's program and it was a delicious one to say the least. It had to do with an upcoming fundraiser for our club, beginning in August. The picture shows some wonderful goodies from Butter Braid Frozen Pastry Dough. The selection to take orders for are Apple, Blueberry Cream Cheese, Cherry, Cinnamon, Cream Cheese, four cheese & Herb, and Strawberry Cream Cheese. All we need to do is to get out and take orders. As the words say on the order blank: 'Each 1 lb, 6 oz braided pastry (icing included) will serve 11 people. Just allow your frozen pastry to thaw and rise until about double in size, and then bake for a great homemade tasting pastry!' Sound good? Rhonda brought samples and fed the club. Yummmmm!
Wow! Wow! Another lucky draw for Chester Banks. He donated it to the Eliminate Program! Good going Chester!
Program for this coming Thursday, August 2, 2018
The Program for this coming Thursday will be presented by John Roppolo and will be on the subject of Special Olympics.
Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year round training and competitions to 5 million athletes and United States Sports partners in 172 countries. Special Olympics competitions are held every day, all around the world - - including local, national and regional competitions, adding up to more than 100,000 events a year. This program will be a good one, so bring a friend.
San Marcos Kiwanis Board Meeting.
Our club held it's monthly Board of Directors last Thursday evening, July 26, 2018 with the following members present: Doug Balkman, Pres; Kelli Whigham, Pres. Elect; Glen Rydl, Secretary; Randy Cook, Treas; Francis Mendez, Member; Gary Nelson, member; Rhonda White, member and Del Brown, Newletter Editor.
After the Secretary and Treasurer report was discussed, they were approved. The following items were discussed: (1) The Installation Banquet, which will be at the Price Center on Thursday evening, September 27, 2018. (2) Pres. Doug discussed the Kiwanis International Annual Convention held in Las Vegas. He indicated the following officers elected: President for one year term,Florencio C. "Poly" Lat; President Elect for 1 Year term; President Elect for 1 year term; Daniel Vigneron from Luxembourg. Vice President for 1 year term; Arthur N. Riley from Maryland; Trustees for 3 year term: Katrina J. Baranko from Georgia; George R. Delisle from Massachusetts, and Ronal E. Smith from Arizona. We wish them well during their term in office.
Pres Doug then brought the board up to date in the Eliminate Program. We are still sending funds from Big Bucks for this program. Another issue regarding a donation request was donating $1000 to the Salvation Army specifically for the University Apartment fire victims. We will be 'passing the hat' also on Thursday. Checks and cash will be accepted.
Other miscellaneous matters brought up dealt with the personalized picket slats for the Children's Park Playscape, Kiwanis & Veteran's Day Shirts, New Badges, and the Creedmore Casino Night. No definite decisions were made for these at this time.
"Last Camp Cleanup"
The last clean up of our Club camp turned out ratherr sparse,and this is just one picture of the stalwart ones that went out and mowed and other things that were needed. Those who went out were Doug & Jean Balkman, and Gary & Nancy Strunk. I didn't know that two could ride those mowers. Thanks for the four of you that went out in this heat.

July 27, 1953 - - The Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice by U.S. and North Korean delegates at Panmunjom, Korea. The war had lasted just over three years!
July 28, 1932 - - The Bonus March eviction in Washington, D.C., occurred as U.S. Army troops under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, Major Dwight D. Eisenhower and Major George S. Patton, attacked and burned the encampments of unemployed World War I veterans. About 15,000 veterans had marched on Washington, demanding payment of a war bonus they had been promised. After two months' encampment in Washington's Anacostia Flats, forced eviction of the bonus marchers by the U.S. Army was ordered by President Herbert Hoover!
July 29, 1883 - - Benito Mussolini was born in Dovia, Italy. He ruled Italy from 1922-1943, first as prime minister and then as 'Il Duce,' the absolute dictator!
July 30, 1863 - - Automotive pioneer Henry Ford was born in Dearborn Township, Michigan. He developed an assembly-line production system and introduced a $5-a-day wage for automobile workers. 'History is bunk', he once said!
July 31, 1776 - - During the American Revolution, Francis Salvador became the first Jew to die in the conflict. He had also been the first Jew elected to office in Colonial America, voted a member of the South Carolina Provincial Congress in January 1775
August 1,1944 - - Anne Frank penned her last entry into her diary. "ll keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if,.... there weren't any other people living in the world." Three days later, Anne and her family were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Anne died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on March 15, 1945, at age 15!
August 2, 1776 - -In Philadelphia, most of the 55 members of the Continental Congress signed the parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence!

"Cracked Up"
"The general store often had a cracker barrel in which citizens of the town would gather to play games, and tell stories. Often listeners did not crack a smile at all. At other time, a lot of laughter was created. If a teller of a tall tale evoked a lot of laughter it was like hitting a bulls eye and so faces with cracked smiles mean "first class."
Today the term now signifies anything that isn't first class is well....'not what it is cracked up to be.'
Another version: 'Cracked Up' also refers to a Civil War time makeup. At this time the makeup mostly consisted of beeswax, ladies had to partially melt the makeup beside the fire before applying it, and after application it would harden. If the lady laughed or smiled it would crack the makeup, and thereby look like her face was "cracking up.'"

"An Amish boy and his father were visiting a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and back together again.

While the boy and his father were watching wide-eyed an old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed a button.
