It's Almost Installation Banquet Time Again!......Remember: 6pm, Thursday September 21, at 6pm at Brookdale San Marcos North. There is no charge for this meal, but a $10 donation to Tracy would be appreciated.
Our New Lt. Governor will be installing our new President, President Elect, Secretary and Treasurer, plus those to be elected and installed to sit on our Board of Directors.
Our new President will be Doug Balkman, (Tracy Herman stays on as Past President in a non voting capacity). Kelli Whigham will be the President-Elect, Glen Rydl will remain on as Secretary, Charles Johnson will remain on as Treasurer. Wait until the 21'st to discover the full slate of officers and Board Members. Remember, we will be having a Roundtable on that morning, at 11:30. Come on to Grins and just 'jaw' a bit.
Week September 15th to September 21, 2017
September 15, 1940 - - The height of the Battle of Britain occurred as massive German air raids took place against London, Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool and Manchester. The British claimed 185 German planes were shot down.
September 16, 1620 - - The Mayflower ship departed from England, bound for America with 102 passengers and a small crew. The ship weathered dangerous Atlantic storms and reached Provincetown, Massachusetts on November 21st. The Pilgrims disembarked at Plymouth on December 26th.
September 17, 1862 - - The bloodiest day in U.S. military history occurred as General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate armies were stopped at Antietam in Maryland by General George B. McClellan and numerically superior Union forces. By nightfall 26,000 men were dead, wounded or missing.
September 18, 1947 - - The U.S. Air Force was established as a separate military service.
September 19, 1893 - - New Zealand became the first country to grant women the right to vote.
September 20, 1973 - - The much-hyped "Battle of the sexes" took place in the Houston Astrodome as tennis player and women's rights activist, Billie Jean King, defeated self-styled male chauvinist Bobby Riggs, a retired tennis champion, had been critical of the quality of women's tennis.
September 21, 1949- - The People's Republic of China was proclaimed by its Communist leaders.

"Tell It to the Marines"

In the United States, we live in a country where there are vast difference in culture and climate, ranging from simple country folk to sophisticated city dwellers and from temperate climates to the hot and humid. Let's take a humorous look at what we might call 'home'!
The Deep South:

*You can rent a movie and buy bait at the same place!
*"He needed killin" is a valid defense.
*Everywhere is either "over yonder," "in yonder" or "out yonder"
*Everyone has two first names: Billy Bob, Jimmy Bob, Joe Bob, Betty Jean, Mary Beth, Mary Jo etc.

*You say "the city" and expect everyone to know you mean Manhattan.
*You believe that being able to swear at people in their own language makes you multi-lingual.
*You can get into a four-hour argument about how to bget from Columbus Circle to Battery Park, but can't find Iowa on a map.

1........Uranus was officially discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1781. At first Herschel thought it was a comet, but several years later it was confirmed as a planet. Herscal tried to have his discovery named "Georgian Sidus" after King George III. The name Uranus was suggested by astronomer Johann Bode. The name comes from the ancient Greek deity Ouranos!
2.........Uranus turns on its axis once every 17 hours, 14 minutes. The planet rotates in a retrograde direction, opposite to the way Earth and most other planets turn.
3..........Uranus makes one trip around the Sun every 84 Earth years. During some parts of its orbit one or the other of its poles point directly at the Sun and get about 42 years of direct sunlight. the rest of the time they are in darkness.
4...........Uranus is often referred to as an "ice giant" planet. Like the other gas giants, it has a hydrogen upper layer, which has helium mixed in. Below that is an icy "mantle", which surrounds a rock and ice core. The upper atmosphere is made of water, ammonia and the methane ice crystals that give the planet its pale blue color.
5............Uranus hits the coldest temperatures of any planet. With minimum atmospheric temperature of -224.C,Uranus is nearly coldest planet in the solar system. While Neptune doesn't get as cold as Uranus it is on average colder. The upper atmosphere of Uranus is covered by a methane haze which hides the storms that take place in the cloud decks.
6............Uranus has two sets of very thin dark colored rings. The ring particles are small, ranging from a dust-sized particles to small boulders. There are eleven inner rings and two outer rings. They probably formed when one or more of Uranus's moons were broken up in an impact. The first rings were discovered in 1977 with the two outer rings being discovered in Hubble Space Telescope images between 2003 and 2005.
7.............Uranus' moons are named after characters created by William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. These include Oberon, Titania and Miranda. All are frozen worlds with dark surfaces. Some are ice and rock mixtures. The most interesting moon is Miranda; it has ice canyons, terraces, and other strange-looking surface areas.
8..............Only one spacecraft has flown by Uranus. In 1986, the Voyager 2 spacecraft swept past the planet at a distance of 81,500 km. It returned the first close-up images of the planet, its moons, and rings.
America the Beautiful.....CONNECTICUT
1.......In colonial New Haven cut pumpkins were used as guides for haircuts to secure a round uniform style. Because of this fashion, these New Englanders were nicknamed "pumpkin-heads!"
2........B.F. Clyde's Cider Mill is the only steam-powered Cider Mill in the United States and is located in Mystic, Connecticut!
3........The first golf tournament in Connecticut for women only was held in Waterbury on June 12, 1917!
4.........West Hartford is the birthplace of Noah Webster, the author of the first dictionary published in 1807!
5.........The town of Washington was incorporated in 1779, being named in honor of General George Washington!
6.........The manufacturing of the first safety fuse started in Simsbury in 1836!
7.........Wallingford has earned a worldwide reputation for the production of silverware!
8.........In 1728, the first steel mill operating in America was located in Simsbury!
9.........The first human inhabitants of present-day Burlington were members of the Tunxis Tribe, who belonged to a confederation of Algonquian Indians. Legend holds they used the area as a hunting ground!
10.........The name Middlebury derives from the central position the Town's meetinghouse occupies, six miles from three older neighbors, Waterbury, Southbury, and Woodbury!
"America the Beautiful...."Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration"
Mystic Aquarium was first opened in 1973 as a privately owned corporation. Industrialist and philanthropist Kelvin Smith was the primary shareholder; he chose Mystic, Connecticut as the site because of the area's scenic shoreline and rich maritime history. In 1999, the aquarium and Ballard's Institute for Exploration combined to form a $52 million expansion.
The aquarium hosted several marine mammals from the Ahedd Aquarium which it was undergoing renovation to its marine mammal habitat between September 2008 and May 2009.
Mystic Aquarium holds three beluga whales, three Steller sea lions, two Northern fur seals, seven California sea lions, harbor seals, a large colony of African black-footed penguins, unicorn fish, blue tang, octopus, Japanese spider crabs, sand tiger sharks, bamboo sharks, sea turtles, clownfish, and other oceanic creatures.
