.jpg) ORIGINS OF THE MONDAY HOLIDAY In 1968, Congress passed the Monday Holidays Act, which moved the official observance of Washington's birthday from Feb. 22 to the third monday in February. Some reformers had wanted to change the name of the holiday as well, to President's Day, in honor of both Lincoln and Washington, but that proposal was rejected by Congress, and the holiday remained officially Washington's Birthday.
Nevertheless, there was a popular misconception that the day had been officially renamed, a misconception only reinforced by the fact that the third Monday in
February can only occur between Febs. 15 and Feb. 21. This means that the holiday is always after Lincoln's birthday and before Washington's birthday, without ever coinciding with either. Furthermore, some states whicdh had previously celebratede Lincoln's Birthday dropped the observance after the federal holiday reforms, supporting the notion that the two presidential birthdays had been combined.

"NOAH"....The next important person was Noah. He was a really good guy, but one of his kids was a Ham. Noah built a big boat in his back yard andpudt his family and a lot of animals in it. He asked his neighbors to join them, but they said they would have to take a rain check......
"ABRAHAM, ISAAC, JACOB AND JOSEPH"....Next were Abraham, his son Isaac and his grandson, Jacob. Esau was Jacob's brother, but Jacob was more famous because Esau sold him his birthmark for some pot roast. Jacob had a son, Joseph. Joseph wore a really loud sports coat. (More next week)

 Wow, did Sam Brannon and Kathleen O'Donnell give us a lot to think about with regard
s to the potential danger of flouride in our drinking water. Also he gave quite a rundown on our debt within the county. If you didn't make the meeting, you missed a good one. All of our programs are so geared as to provide pertinent information that is conducive to our daily living. In the end though, each person much take the information given and see how it applies to their own personal lives. Thanks Sam and Kathleen for giving us much to chew on.

It is so important for our kids to know that we are interested in what they are doing. That's why we need to attend some of their meetings. The K-Kids are having their bi-weekly meeting this coming Tuesday, February 17 in the library of DeZavala Elementary School. Two weeks ago we only had 2 present, Let's show them that the present project of "Pennies for Patients" is something that we and encourage them in. Let's have 4 or 5 or more show up at 7:30am. It will only last until 8:00am.

 .jpg) Here's some latest information with regards to our status as a Model Club. This letter was from Steve, Hinson, Manager of Major and Planned Giving, Kiwanis International Foundation. "Dear Friends: Thank you for your commitment of $21,750.oo to The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. Your club has raised $10,889.00 to date and has committed to raise 80% (8,688.00) of the balance of your commitment (10, 860.00). Under the terms of the special anonymous matching program, your club will receive fundraising credit for the other 20% (2,172.00) of the balance of your commitment. It is because of Kiwanis clubs like yours, leading the way to rid the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT), that we are succeeding in the field again this tragic and painful disease. Since we started the campaign, in just four short years, 25 fewer babies are dying every day from tetanus because of our work.
Your gift helps tremendously as we work toward reaching our US$110 million goal and save or protect the lives of more than 61 million mothers and their future children. The effects of MNT are excruciating - tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch, unable to be comforted by their parents and caregivers. Kiwanis International and UNICEF are working together with confidence and optimism to eliminate MNT from the face of the Earth.

It was a beautiful Valentine type interclub on February 14th, when John Polk, Rob Martin, Chester Banks and Del Brown went to Temple, TX, not only to help the Hill Country Kiwanis clubs to celebrate Kiwanis' 100th anniversary, but also to welcome our new District governor, Colleen Biggerstaff to our Division clubs. We had members from Division 23, 24 and our Division, 38. It was a very enlightening and informative meeting beginning at 9am, with everyone there participated in helping to put together 10, 152, rice and fortified soy meals for starving children around the world and in our own communities. It was being done under the "KIDS AGAINST HUNGER" program. See attached pictures. There were 38 volunteers from Kiwanis clubs all working together to put these meals together.
At 12:00, we had lunch, had the welcome by Rhonda Hershey, Div. 23, had the pledge by Harriet Brodie, from Belton, and Invocation by Perry Winn, from Lampasas.
After the clubs were presented, then Chuck Lauer, Division 23 gave a little "Jeopardy" type quiz on what we knew about Kiwanis. Following that John Curlee have an International Foundation Report, followed by Bill Gordon who gave a report on "The Formula". This was followed by Governor Biggerstaff's address which was very pertinent and talked about her goals and expectations for the coming year. She was accompanied by her husband. All in all, it was a very good meeting.

 Remember, that this coming Thursday has been set as the last day to accept Silent Auction items. It is very important to get them in to Pam and Kelli. The Silent Auction is very important and in year's past, we have had over a hundred items submitted.
Let's do more this year, and have a very successful day. Also remember that we would like people to be at the Activity Center to help set up by around 7:30am on the 26th. And also don't forget that it is going to be a long day, we are going to be tired at the end, but let's all join together as a team and pull together. There are plenty of tasks to be done, and each task is important.
You are important! We could not put on any activity without everyone pulling together. That's what a team is, that's what a team does. We have some members doing things that maybe they have never done before....offer to help them out. If you have never done a particular task in the past, just look ahead and do what we all know needs to be done. You are a great club. We are proud of everyone of you.
