Scholarship Recipients Speak at our Club Meeting Last
Thursday.
Garry White, Chairman of our Kiwanis Club Scholarship had our Scholarship Recipients come to our meeting and had them tell a bit about themselves and what their plans are following graduation from High School. There were five scholarships of $1,000 each given, but one of the recipients, Jesus Alvarez, was not able to be there, but will try to be there at our next meeting. The ones who were in attendance each got up and told us something about themselves, and what their plans were in higher education. Those who gave talks wereJulian Delarosa, who will be attending University of Texas; Erica Rodriguez-San, who will be attending University of Texas and majoring in business; Edwin Aultwho will be attending University of Texas and is planning on going to medical school; and finally Luis Trejowho is going to A&M and will be studying Animal Science. We wish all of them the best wishes for a bright future.
No winner last Thursday. McBride Wilson's name was drawn, but he was not present. Sorry McBride!
What a Fantastic Success at the Kitchen Cottage last Friday!
What a wonderful turnout both from our club and also from the city. We had fourteen club members and two absolutely marvelous dishwashers. The meal was tremendous, (Creamy Chicken Ritz Casserole on top of steaming rice, surrounded by a delicious tossed salad and a delightful collection of desserts. The club served almost 50 people who came from all over San Marcos. This is the first time Kiwanis has been host to this meal, and it was well received.
President Tracy Herman worked very hard in drawing this together, but it took a joint effort to pull it off. Those of the club who donned aprons and sanitary gloves were Lucky Bovo, Randy Cook, Pam Cook, Kelli Whigham, Beverly Crumley, Rhonda White, Glen Rydl, Del Brown, Rob Martin, Tracy Herman, Gary nelson, Charles Johnson, Frederick Case, and Veronique Hahn. The two faithful dishwashers were Isabel Martinez and Elda H. Hagy.
Thanks to every one who pitched in and made this event a very successful one.
K-Kids walk through a Fitness Day!
Last week, the K-Kids from DeZavala School 'walked' through every classroom and told the kids in each room just how they can develop healthy habits both in school and at home, and to stay physically and mentally fit as summer gets closer.
They walked as a group and visited every classroom under the leadership of their sponsor, Brittany Bouzard. This was a special project that they have done in the past in the gymnasium, and our Kiwanis members have helped, but this time, rather than meeting in the gym, they went as a group, and explained various bits of information on how to stay healthy and fit. It was called "Fitness Day" You can see by the smiles on their faces that they were enjoying this event very much. They are to be congratulated for doing this.

As we have done over the years with what we collect from renting out our flags, Susan Smith will be updating what is going on with the children, youth and adults at the Public Library. She will also be given her annual support check which comes from our flag program.

May 19, 1890..... Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh was bor4n in the central Vietnamese village of Kim Lien (as Nguyen That Thanh). In 1930, he organized the Indo-Chinese Communist party and later adopted the name Ho Chi Mihn, meaning "he who enlightens". In 1945, he proclaimed the independence of Vietnam and served as president of North Vietnam from 1945 to 1969. He led the longest and most costly war during the 20th Century against the French and later the Americans. On April 29, 1975, six years after his death, the last American left South Vietnam. Th8e next day, the city of Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.

With nearly 300 bishops in attendance at Nicaea in Asia minor, the council condemned Arianism which denied Christ's divinity, formulated the Nicene Creed and fixed the date of Easter.
May 21, 1881 - - The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton. The organization today provides volunteer disaster relief in the U.S. and abroad. Community services include collecting and distributing donated blood and teaching health and safety classes.
May 22, 1972 - - President Richard Nixon became the first American president to visit Moscow. Four days later, Nixon and Soviet Russia's leader Leonid Brezhnev signed a pact pledging to freeze nuclear arsenals at current levels.
May 23, 1846 - - The first American female attorney, Arabella Mansfield was born near Burlington, Iowa (as Belle Aurelia Babb). She was certified in 1869 as an attorney and admitted to the Iowa bar, but never practiced law. Instead she chose a career as a college educator and administrator. She was also instrumental in the founding of the Iowa Suffrage Society in 1870.

This statement stems from the ancient medical maxim, Like cures like----thus even in the Iliad we find the Greek belief that a wound caused by the spear of Achilles could be healed by an ointment containing rust from that same spear. And to this day there are men and women who sincerely believe that the best cure from the bite of a dog is some of the hair from that dog applied to the wound. AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL( Exploring some of the 'Beauty' spots in our country!
"Cloud Gate, Chicago, Ill.
Cloud Gate is a pu8blic sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millenium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture and AT&RT Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza and Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed THE BEAN because of its shape. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It measures 33 by 66 by 42 feet, and weighs 110 short tons.
Kapoor's design was inspired by liquid mercury and the sculpture's surface reflects and distorts the city's skyline. Visitors are able to walk around and under Cloud Gate's 12 foot high arch. On the underside is the 'omphalos' (Greek for 'navel', a concave chamber that warps and multiplies reflections. The sculpture builds upon many of Kapoor's artistic themes, and it is popular with tourists as a photo-taking opportunity for its unique reflective properties.
