 KELLI WHIGHAM WILL BRING THE PROGRAM FOR THIS COMING THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH, 2015.
Our speaker for this coming Thursday will be Abigail Gillifillan, Permit Manager in the Planning and Development Department of our city. The mission for this department is to manage the growth and development of the community by carrying out adopted Council policies and providing professional expertise in the area of city planning.
To continue their commitment to providing high quality customer service to the various groups this department serve, including builders, developers, land owners, neighbourhood groups, city commissions, outside agencies and the citizens of the community. It also enhances the tax base and livability of the community by encouraging high quality growth and development.
The Planning Department's principal responsibilities are: (1) Develop and maintain a Comprehensive Master Plan and Land Development Code,
(2) Review applications and development plans to ensure code compliance and compatibility with zoning and land use designations; (3) Provides an information center to assist citizens on projects pertaining to their property, neighbourhood and throughout the city.
We are all involved in this, so let's have a full house for this week's program.

 KIWANIAN OF THE MONTH
Last Thursday, October 29, our president Moe presented another one of his traditional accolades and that was to present Kelli Whigham with a bright pink T-shirt marked "Kiwanian of the Month". If anyone deserved such an honor, it would be Kelli. She headed up the October Dash 5K race committee, taking a lot of extras upon herself to help make this race, run under the worst of conditions, pouring down rain, thunder, wind, everyone getting soaked to the skin and never did we hear one single negative comment come from Kelli, or any of the 17 club members or the ten runners that considered this race one that they wanted to participate in, because if those putting it on were willing to be there under those conditions, then they wanted to run. Kelli, you are a tremendous leader, and we would follow you anywhere. Congratulations on this award.

 HOW NICE THE VETERAN'S DAY PARADE FLOAT LOOKS.
We all know how we get the float to look this way, and that is we all pitch in and help to put it together down at the Warehouse. Next Saturday, November 7th is our annual San Marcos Veteran's Day Parade. We've been doing this for quite a few years now, so we all know what needs to be done. It is not just the decorating that takes time, but the putting the float together so we can decorate it. That is going to happen this coming Friday, November 6th, down at our club Warehouse. Let's try and get down there about 8-8:30 or the latest, 9am. We should all know how it goes together so it shouldn't take that long. Then on Saturday, November 7th, let's all meet at Ted's Shop at 8am, and decorate the float. We'll then drive over to the East side of the Courthouse, where we always park, eat some breakfast, help the kids decorate their bikes, and then load on the float, but we will also need some to walk with the kids riding their bikes. It is a proud day. It is a day that makes me proud, being a veteran, but also proud that I am a Kiwanian. Let's have a great turnout to make this another successful parade.

 WHAT A GREAT PROGRAM LON SHELL BROUGHT LAST THURSDAY.
Lee Graham, president of Mensor Corporation brought a most informative program last Thursday, October 29. I must admit that I don't know a lot about engineering, but Lee described the mission of Mensor in such a way that even I could understand. I always wondered how you measure pressure, and it is a known fact that Mensor is a leading company in this field, along with coordinating with other countries. Lee explained in great length how they happened to come to acquire the property next to their old building to construct their new building, and the care and accuracy they put into building that building was remarkable. Thanks Lon and thank you Lee for contributing to our understanding of the businesses in our city.

 SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGERS HELP NEEDED.
I know that it isn't anywhere near Christmas time and that means gearing up for getting people to sign up to ring bells for Salvation Army. Last year, Gary & Nancy Strunk took on the coordinating of the ringers by themselves. It's too much for one person, or even two persons. We are reaching out to see of there isn't another couple or two that would like to help in the setting up and signing people up to ring.  Request for Assistance
Patty Dickerson, a teacher at Bonham Pre-K School in San Marcos wrote a letter which came to the attention of our Club president, who passed it on to our Support Committee. Since Bonham is a new facility, they are requesting assistance in the form of Playground equipment. I am passing this on through our bulletin to let our readers know of their request. Without reading the entire letter, let me itemize some of their needs that they are seeking help.
(1)...Garden areas for all classrooms - raised garden boxes approximately 3' X8'....12 in each garden areas.
(2)....Outdoor writing areas - large plywood board painted with chalkboard paint, also a large structure with laminate to paint on.
(3)....Water play area - a free standing water trough constructed on site.
(4)....Balance and Stepping structures. made up of graduated in height crosscut logs - enclosed in area filled with gravel.
(5)....ADA pathways to garden and bike track made uip of mulch surface.
(6)....Bike track - concrete surface
(7).....Fall Zone area that is encircled with either landscape timbers or other border and filled with approved mulch...future climbing structure and balance beams.
(8).....Fast growing trees to provide shade
(9).....Music area built into the playground that includes durable constructed "musicsal instruments" such as: Tank drums, PVC musical chimes, wooden xylophone, metal pipe chimes, drain pipe drums.

HISTORICAL FACTS DURING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 30TH TO NOVEMBER 2:
October 30, 1938........The War of the Worlds radio broadcast panicked millions of Americans. Actor Orson Welles and the Mercury Players dramatized the story by H.G. Wells depicting a Martian invasion of New Jersey. Their script utilized simulated radio news bulletins which many listeners thought were real.
October 31, 1517..........Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg's palace church, denouncing the selling of papal indulgences and questioning various ecclesiastical practices. This marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in Germany.
November 1, 1848.......The first medical school for women opened in Boston. The Boston Female Medical School was founded by Samuel Gregory with just twelve students. In 1874, the school merged with the Boston University School of Medicine, becoming one of the first co-ed medical schools.
November 2, 1947......The first and only flight of Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" flying boat occurred in Long Beach Harbor, California. It flew about a mile at an altitude of 70 feet. Costing $25 million, the 200-ton plywood eight-engine Hercules was the world's largest airplane, designed, built and flown by Hughes. It later became a tourist attraction alongside the Queen Mary ship at Long Beach and has since been moved to Oregon.
November 3, 1957.......Soviet Russia launched the world's first inhabited space capsule, Sputnik II, which carried a dog named Laika.
November 4, 1922.......King Tut's tomb was discovered at Luxor, Egypt, by British archaeologist Howard Carter after several years of searching. The child-King Tutankhamen became pharaoh at age nine and died around 1352 B.C. at age 19. The tomb was found most intact, containing numerous priceless items now exhibited in Egypt's National Museum in Cairo.
November 5, 1911.....Aviator C.P. Snow completed the first transcontinental flight across America, landing at Pasadena, California. He had taken off from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17th and flew a distance of 3,417 miles.
