Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Pancake Day is not that Far Away.....February 23rd.!
All of us have now received Doug's Assignment Sheet for working on Pancake Day, February 23!
This is one of our biggest fundraisers, and everyone is expected to take part in it. The list of participants is quite clear, so even if you haven't been as active in the weekly meetings, please set aside time to help with our Pancake Day/Silent Auction. As I have published in articles from Kiwanis is a Verb it is everyone's responsibility to help out, not just a few, but everyone!
It also means that all of us should be getting out and visiting our businesses to get silent auction items. Last week, Pam Cook handled out list, with the names of those who contributed and the names of those who solicited those donations. Remember our silent auction is one of the things that attracts our community. So let's not wait until the last minute....get out and solicit.

What Makes Kiwanians Tick, (Continued)
Self Esteem is next in importance. Most people who join modern-day Kiwanis don't have particular Self-Esteem concerns either. They seem to feel reasonably good about themselves./
Only Maslow's final need, Self Actualization, goes un- met in many Kiwanians lives. Not a simple concept, Self Actualization (or self-fulfillment) touches upon the things in our lives that make us distinctly human. In part, Self-Actualization is what drives artists to paint, musicians to play, theoretical scientists to ponder the nature of the universe, and authors to write. It is the need that, when met, makes us truly human - - the need that, when met, takes us outside of ourselves and allows us, among other things, to work to make our world a better place to live in.
Self-Actualization is what successful Kiwanis clubs offer their members. It is what Kiwanis offers us all in Young Children.. .. ..Priority One and Sponsored Clubs, and in countless other programs, Kiwanis offers us ways to change the world and actualize ourselves.
So when a fellow Kiwanian asks you to make a commitment to a service effort, don't ask How little can I get away with doing? (usually worded What is my share?) Ask instead How much can I do? If you think about it, What is my share? addresses only our need for Belonging. How much can I do? addresses our need for Self-Actualization. And the essence of our humanity is in the difference.
Don't forget that Monday morning, January 16th is Martin Luther King Day, and we will be putting up flags on that day.
People are forever seeking inspiration from role models - - on the stage, on the screen, on the field. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. has remained relevant for more than 60 years. His fight for peace, unity and equality still echoes on his birthday, January 16
Those who are putting up flags meet at Ted's place at 7am.

Post colonial Rwanda was shaped by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Standing as one of the swiftest episodes of mass murder the world has seen, nearly one million Rwandas were killed in a 100 day period. The aftermath of the genocide resulted in not only the massive loss of life, but also the complete decimation of national infrastruction. In 1994, no schools, hospitals, factories, or government departments were functioning. Rwanda's new government was faced with the tremendous task of stabilizing and rebuilding it.
Today, seventeen years after the genocide, the socioeconomic impact of the horrific 100 days still lingers. Hutu militia raped Tutsi women in a deliberate plan to use HIV/AIDS as a weapon that would go on killing long after they had murdered their other victims. An estimated 11% of all females living in Rwanda at the time of the genocide were victims of the concerted rape campaign. As a direct result of the death and violence in 1994, there are more than 600,000 widows living in Rwanda.

"America the Beautiful"
In 1967, the Common Council of the City of London began to look for potential buyers for the London Bridge. Lake Havasu City founder and entrepreneur Robert P. McCullough placed the winning bid of $2,460,000 on April 18, 1968.
McCullough came by this figure by doubling the estimated cost of dismantling the structure, which was $1.2 million, bringing the price to $2.4 million. He then added on $60,000 - a thousand dollars for each year of his age at the time he estimated the bridge would be reconstructed in Arizona.
Following reconstruction of the London Bridge, Lake Havasu City rededicated it in a ceremony on October 10, 1972. Since then, it has consistently remained a favorite among Arizona attractions, drawing many people from all over America to view it.

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other card whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital." This is when the taxi driver taught me what I now call "the law of the Garbage Truck."
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up. they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the street.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't
