I want all of you to know something, When it comes to kids, our club really turns out. Last Friday (and I am sorry to do not have pictures, yet...but there were pictures taken and as soon as I get some, I'll post them), but let me tell you, we had about 30 new K-Kids installed from DeZavala School, and our club turnout was absolutely tremendous!. Kayla Shook, the school advisor for the K-Kids and Randy Cook , club advisor were thrilled to pieces. We had 17 club members there congratulatingthose 3rd,4th & 5th graders as they were given their certificates of membership and their pins. President Del also presented their support check of $500 and they were thrilled. Those club members present were Doug Balkman (and his wife Jeanne), Charles Johnson, Del Brown, GlenRydll, McBride Wilson, Lon Shell,Andrew Gary, Randy & Pam Cook, John Polk, Gary Nelson,Gary Strunk (and his wife Nancy), Frederick Case (and his wife Margo), Francis Mendez, Garry White, Kelli Whigham, & Ted Breihan.......(Answers to Consitution.....#45-A.......#46-B)

to ebsure that no mother has to fear losing her baby to tetanus. Although we have much to celebrate, we must not rest as 134 newborns still die every day from tetanus. That's one baby every11 minutes.
We are sharing this message from Kiwanis International, because our club has made great strides in donating to Eliminate, but we can still do
more...We must do more. There are women and babies depending on us.

What can we possibly say about last Saturday's Veteran's Day Parade. It was awesome! That is an understatement too. Again, our club turned out in fantastic style from beginning to end to decorate the float on Saturday morning as well as volunteering to put out about 30 flags all around the city square. Everyone really knew what they were doing because they have done it in the past, but all of the club members, include McBride's grandson, Wade all pitched, put streamers, flags, banners, decorating in a fantastic red, white and blue that made all of us so proud. Those of us who are veterans know what it is like, when our city turns out in grand style to honor them. We had 20 kids show up to ride in the Kid's Bike Brigade, and two very excited kids walked away with two new bikes, donated by Academy Sports Store here in San Marcos. Sure the kids might have been a bit small for the bikes, but they will be able to trade them in on something smaller, or grow into the bigger ones. What a great crowd of parents who walked with some of our club members to make sure the kids didn't fall or fall. Thanks parents. The Parks and Recreation did a great job of organizing this event and we thank them for it. The free breakfast of biscuits and gravy and sausage was tremendous, thanks to the graciousness of Cafe on the Square. Everyone was so upbeat, and the whole event made you proud to be an American in a wonderful country. God Bless America. The club members that turned out, and some of our members was off doing other Kiwanis functions, like Moe who was helping out with a race, but the ones that made it, were Sam, Chester, Pam and Randy, Del, Kellie and Steve Whigham, Francis, McBride and his grandson, Wade, John P, Gary N., Gary S., Doug Balkman,Ted, Frederick, Beverly, and Glen who brought his ATV. Thanks Glen. Also thanks for those who were able to follow the float back to the warehouse and dismantle All in I would say Saturday was Teamwork in Action!

Please join Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014 at 8:30am to recognize National Veteran's Day. the annual ceremony will take kplace in front of the hospital's campus at 1301 Wonder World Drive. The event will honor local veterans with a color guard ceremony provided by San Marcos High School's Air Force JROTC. Music will be provided by The Kyle sisters, and light refreshments will be served. The event is free, and everyone in the community is invited to attend.

A very interesting program is coming up this coming Thursday, November 13. Moe Johnson is bringing someone that i
s skilled in the art of acupunture. Your editor has never been treated with this method, but from what I have been it can quite effective with regards to certain ailments. It promises to be a very informative program and hope that we have a great turnout.

There are two dates coming up that are very important to our club as well as to the kids in our schools, There will be a gathering of Terrific Kids first of all on Friday, December 12 at 2pm over at DeZavala School. The other date will be set for Friday, May 22, 2015, again at 2pm. As most of you know, Terrific Kids is a Kiwanis awards program and it is designed to build self-esteem. Twice a year, all elementary grades get together twice a year. All twenty-six teachers select 3 students to recognize. Therefore 78 students are recognized in December and another 78 students are recognized in May. Parents and grandparents are invited.
We try to have at least 9 Kiwanis members there to fill their sacks with items from McDonalds, Wells Fargo Bank, Frost Bank, Kiwanis etc. It is a fun occasion. It recognizes those hard working kids that come every day, who follow directions, and don't cause problems. We look forward to have a good turnout from our club for these two events.

What about some of the activities that our club engaged in way back when. All of the activities engaged in required expenditures, so there had to be some activities that made money. It began in 1939 with the Annual Pancake Festival. After Dr. Claude Elliot had visited a club using this method, our club started their firrst Kiwanis Pancake Supper. Every bit of the needed supplies were donated, and tickets were sold for .25. While inflation and other factors have changed conditions, this has proven one of the most profitable, and at the same time one of the most enjoyed of all of the club's activities. The public, besides getting its money's worth, enjjoyed the sight of business and professional leaders and dignified professors in waiters' outfits, and the club members enjoy the fellowship that comes from working together.
Another activity that was successful in raising large amounts for three or four years in the early fifties was the Kiwanis Radio Auction. Although it produced from $1000 to $1500 annually, it was discontinued because the products sold came from donations by merchants, and this did not seem to be in harmony with Kiwanis principles.
