OUR UPCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, AUGUST 27, 2015
Moe Johnson will be bringing a most interesting program this coming Thursday. He will be bringing Amy Kirwin, who is part of our city's Parks & Recreation staff and heads up the initiative to Keep San Marcos Beautiful. Their mission is to educate and engage San Marcos residents and visitors in taking responsibility of improving our community environment.
Keeping San Marcos Beautiful is a city initiative established in 2009 in order to promote keeping the city's environment visually and physically pristine. This is achieved through programs consisting of litter removal and prevention, communication beautification and environmental education. Amy and her crew strive to efficiently use their resources within city departments, as well as partnerships with organizations and individuals to advocate for a cleaner and healthier city. By working as one, the environmental can improve for all of us who live, work and play in San Marcos. One specialty that is relatively new and is being monitored by this organization is beautifying our downtown walls with very professional murals. I am sure that Amy will talk about that. Let's have a good turnout for our program.

We want to lift up Steve Whigham in our prayers this coming week. Steve is going to be having some surgery over at CTMC This coming Tuesday, August 25th. He has a tremendous surgeon and we know he is in good hands. Steve is an Honorary Member of our club, and every event that our club puts on, you can count on Steve being there and doing his share. Let's keep Kelli and Steve in our thoughts & prayers this week.

 Our program last week was a real 'dog biter', not literally you know. We had not only Beverly Seffel with us, but she brought along Missy McCullough, who is the Executive Director of Animal Trustees of Austin and Lifelong Animal Advocate. She was probably one of the co-founders of this wonderful organization that gives animals a chance to live a healthy life away of unnecessary abuse. Today, she manages Animal Trustees $2.6 million budget and heads a full time staff of 27, who provide care with compassion. "Everyone that works there love animals. They are the community clinic for animals. The clinic is open six days a week, and closes only for the major holidays. In a nutshell, Animal Trustees provides high-quality yet affordable spay and neuter services, wellness care, treatment for heartworm disease and upwards of 900 special surgical procedures (mainly fractures) annually. It was a wonderful program. Thanks Tracy for setting it up, and thanks to both Beverly and Missy for filling our club in on a much needed concern, namely care of our pets.

 WE HAD ANOTHER WINNER LAST WEEK,FOR OUR BIG BUCKS
Our winner last week was Glen Rydl, and guess what, his birthday was on the 18th of August, and we had just finished singing "Happy Birthday" to him, and he even had a cake which we all enjoyed. But then he won Big Bucks, $2.00, but guess what, he turned around and gave it back to The Eliminate Project. Thanks Glen.

 LET'S FULFILL OUR COMMITMENT TO BE A MODEL CLUB
Back on January 22, 2015, our club voted to be a Model Club. What is a Model Club? As a Model Club, our club pledged to raise an annual per-member average of $150.00 or more each year for five years....through any combination of fundraising methods. That comes to an average of $13.00 per month, per member over those five years. Our commitment began back in January, 2015. We have been consistently doing our best to fulfill that pledge, and we are almost there. As of last Thursday, August 20, our Secretary told us that we have only $613.00 left to fulfill our commitment. We can do it, I know we can. We have been putting Big Bucks and Happy dollars, purchasing Zeller awards, and now we are just $613.00 away from being a Model Club. Have you done all you can to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from our earth. You can, you know. If you haven't contributed anything toward the commitment that we made, why not? This was not a commitment of a few, but as our entire club. Our secretary, John Polk can give you an update. Just call him, or email him. Wouldn't it be a blessing to tell our city that we set a goal and we are only $613.00 away from that goal. Think about it! Think of all those little babies that have a right to live, and they can live through the tetanus innoculation. Who will put us over the top so we can fulfill our commitment that we made as a club. We don't have to wait for five years. Let's do it this year! Let's do it this month!

  WE ARE ONLY 26 DAYS AWAY FROM OUR INSTALLATION BANQUET
The date is September 17, 2015. The event is 'Installation Banquet'. The place is 'The Price Center' on San Antonio Street, Our President Elect Moe Johnson has arranged to have LTC Tony Williams present to speak to us. He is currently an instructor in SMHS for the JRROTC program. We have had him for a program before and he is wonderful. Do plan on being there. We need to have a headcount as to who is coming. Here is an absolutely phenomenal bit of news from Kiwanis International....."During Kiwanis International's centennial year, we've been celebrating the power of 100. But now that number represents more than just a look back at our past. Today, it begins a big step forward.
Kiwanis International is pleased tof announce that The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus has reached $100 million in cash & pledges.
That means the Kiwanis family has saved or protected more than 55 million lives since 2010. And it leaves us just $10 million away from our fundraising goal of $110 million.
Five years ago, we made a commitment. Now we are the verge of making history. When that moment comes....how will you be remembered in Kiwanis history? Make sure you are a part of it! Share our big news - and this big opportunity - with family, friends and others.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE WEEK OF AUGUST 21st - 27(Even though these events all happened in the past, because they did happen has and will continue to affect our lives where we are.)August 21,1863.......During the American Civil War, William Quantrell led 450 irregular Confederate raiders on a pre-dawn terrorist raid of Lawrence, Kansas, leaving 150 civilians dead, 30 wounded and much of the town a smoking ruin. In 1862, Quantrill had been denied a Confederate commission by the Confederate Secretary of War, who labeled Quantrill's notions of war as 'barbarism'
August 22, 1986.......Deadly fumes from a volcanic eruption under Lake Nios in Cameroon killed more than 1,500 persons.
August 23, 1927.......Italian immigrants Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were electrocuted inside a prison at Charleston, Mass. They had been convicted of a shoe factory payroll robbery during which the paymaster and a guard had been killed. Following their convictions, all appeals for a new trial had failed, despite the lack of hard evidence and a later admission by a known criminal that he had participated in the robbery with an organized criminal gang. The days and weeks leading up to their execution aroused worldwide protests amid accusations of unfair treatment because they had radical political views and were Italian.
August 24, 24-25, 1814.......During the War of 1812, Washington, D.C. was invaded by British forces that burned the Capitol, the White House and most other public buildings along with a number of private homes. The burning was in retaliation for the earlier American burning of York, (Toronto).
August 25, 1985........Samantha Smith died in an airplane crash in Maine. In 1982, the 11 year old American schoolgirl had written a letter to Soviet Russia's leader Yuri Andropov asking, "Why do you want to conquer the whole world, or least our country?" To her surprise Andropov replied personally to her and offered an all-expense paid trip to the U.S.S.R. She toured Russia for two weeks amid worldwide publicity and came to symbolize American and Russian hopes for peaceful co-existence.
August 26,1883........One of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in recorded history occurred on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa. Explosions were heard 2,000 miles away. Tidal waves 120 ft. high killed 36,000 persons on nearby islands, while five cubic miles of earth were blasted into the air up to a height of 50 miles.
August 27,1908 ...........Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th U.S. President, was born near Stonewall, Texas. He ascended to the presidency upon the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. Johnson served until January 20, 1969.
