REPORTS:
Kelli reminded the members that the pot luck is at the First United Methodist Church Activity Center at 6:00 pm. John is providing the meats while everyone who is attending should bring either a dessert or covered dish. Also bring a wrapped gift valued between $10-$15 for a gift exchange. Attire is informal.
Lon noted that the installation of new members is scheduled for next week at the Dec. 14th meeting. Rick will be doing the honors as Lon will be attending the graduation of his grandson from Texas A&M.
He reiterated that committees need to be meeting to get procedures in place for accomplishing their respective responsibilities.
The next Board meeting is on Dec. 21st at the Sunflower Bank.
PROGRAM:
Lon introduced his former student Dennis Moore who, along with his daughter Amanda Smith, own and operate the Buggy Barn Museum and Pine-Moore Town in Blanco, TX. Lon had high praise for Dennis and said if he had the time he would tell many good stories about him.
It was wonderful program that started with an historic photo of Blanco in the 1880's. Dennis started the museum 12 years ago as an educational museum. Along with a free-of-charge Family Day, they also award scholarships and donate funds for school supplies.
They have over 200 unique buggies, carriages and wagons that date from the 1860's - 1900's. At one point they were asked to build an old west town at the location. They did and Amanda took over booking film producers to use the town in various movies including True Grit, Lonesome Dove, Vampire Hunter and many others. You might see it in commercials and photo shoots. Amanda also leads tours of the old town. It is a fully functioning Old West town with a Texas Ranger Station, Saloon, Mercantile, barbership, PO, and even a cemetery. The museum and Old West town have gained world wide recognition and awards.
It is too bad so many members either could not or did not attend this program. Dennis and Amanda told some great stories and obviously love and are committed to preserving and sharing this fascinating part of history.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS:
Dec. 14th: Jesse, Kelli and Rick will induct three new members. Officially joining the club are Stacie, Willie, and Felicia. The Kiwanis Board has met and approved these new candidates for membership. Quoting Lon, "We are fortunate to add these members to our Club and want to thank Jesse and the membership committee for their efforts in recruiting and integrating them in our club's services including committees and events. Mentors have been assigned to these new members to assist them in getting familiar with our Website and help them join in our many service activities and club meetings." Please come to join together to welcome these and future new members.
Time will be made after the installation of new members for Committees and Project Groups to meet together. Committee Chairs and Project Coordinators have been provided instructions in organizing their groups. Committee assignments based on surveys administered to club members are identified as Investments on the Home Page of our Kiwanis website. Everyone, by now, should have this information.
Please make every effort to be at the Dec. 14th meeting to show support for the Installation of new members and to make progress on organizing Club Committees and Project Groups.
Dec. 21st: There is not a program. However, there will be important Committee and Project group meetings that need good attendance. Procedural plans need to be developed so that projects, events, and committee work have a clear scope of work in order to be effectively defined and accomplished.
To make it more festive, Kelli is making a cake for all to enjoy in celebrating Jeanne and Lon's Dec. birthdays!
