We always welcome visitors to our club meeting and we are always glad when they come back. Last week, Pastor Todd Salmi, Assistant Pastor of San Marcos First United Methodist Church returned for a visit and also Monica Ruiz, Assistant School Superintendent of our Consolidated School System.
"Key Club Receives their annual support check and gets new Kiwanis Club Advisor"
Last Thursday morning, January 26th, Gary Nelson, Randy Cook, Chester Banks, Del Brown, Gary Strunk and David Chandler attended the Key Club's meeting and their new Kiwanis Club Advisor, Gary Strunk , presented the the club's President an annual check for $1000 to be used for the Key Clubs projects over the year, and also encourage the new officers for the year to attend the upcoming Texas/Oklahoma District Key Club Convention later this year. There were almost 30 students in attendance, and they are very enthusiastic about this coming year. Carrie Coburn and Elijah Stone, both teachers at SMHS are their sponsors and are doing a fantastic job.
"Kiwanis K-Kids meets this Thursday Morning, February 2, 2017
The Kiwanis K-Kids will be meeting this coming Thursday morning, February 2nd at the DeZavala Elementary School. They will be meeting from 7:45am to 8:30am, and will meet in Brittany Bouzard's classroom, No. C-1. Any Kiwanis members that can make it to represent our club and our support and encouraged to attend.

Notice the color of the type in this article. That's to indicate at least the colors of the SMHS, and notice the color on last week's speaker, Dr. Michael A. Cordona, new Superintendent of Schools in the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District. It was a very challenging presentation and a very encouraging talk about what he sees that lies ahead for the San Marcos school system. He expressed his hopes and expectations, very positive and views that will relate to the students of this technical electronic age. Even though this editor was late in getting to the meeting, he picked up some very hopeful signs that Dr. Cordona sees will be implemented in the future, if not already in place. He is very proud of the face that 84% of the students are taking career technology courses, many are taking dual subjects, also taking dual language courses. The school system must look to the future and our school system must keep up with future expectations.
Accompanying Dr. Cordana was Monica Ruiz, the new Assistant Superintendent of Schools, and she also sees some very positive things happening in the future.
Thanks to you Rhonda White for bringing these two very important persons in our city to fill us in on what they see as the future of our school system.
The Program for Thursday, February 2, 2017
David Chandler will be bringing the program this coming week. He and his wife have been doing mission work out west, but he's back now, and we are so glad he is. His program is going to be along the line of possibly a power point presentation having to do with America's Westward Expansion. I know that I am always interested in history, and especially how we got to where we are today. Let's have a great turnout for David's program this week.
Friends of Scouting Luncheon
Every year, Friends of Scouting has a luncheon to honor a person or persons who have exhibited the qualities of scouting in their work in the community. Bill Pennington from Pennington Funeral Homes has been selected as this year's honored guest. In the past our club has always had representatives attend the luncheon which this year is on Tuesday, February 21st, from 11:50am to 1:oopm in the Spring Lake Ballroom, Embassy Suite.
Our club has budgeted an amount each year. If you would like to attend this luncheon, please let our club know as soon as possible, so a table can be reserved for our club. It's a great meal and worthy of our participation. You also may give a donation of your own.

February 1, 2003......Sixteen minutes before it was scheduled to land, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart in flight over west Texas, killing all seven crew members. The accident may have resulted from damage caused during liftoff when a piece of insulating foam from the external fuel tank broke off, piercing a hole in the shuttle's left wing that allowed hot gases to penetrate the wing upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. This was the second space shuttle lost in flight. In January, 1986, Challenger exploded during liftoff.

"What is the difference between a 'kit' and a 'Caboodle"?"
"Anyone who thinks that changes in the English language are orderly and logical should take a look at the expression 'kit and caboodle'. Both words, separately, have distinct meanings, but the two have been lumped together for so long that each has taken on much of the other's meaning.
Both words have Dutch origins. 'Kit' originally meant tankard, or drinking cup, while 'Boedel' meant property or household stuff. By the eighteenth century, 'kit' had become a synonym for tool kit. For example, the knapsacks carried by soldiers that held their eating utensils and nonmilitary necessities were often called called 'kits'. 'Boodle' became slang for money, especially tainted money. By the nineteenth century, 'caboodle' had taken on connotations of crowds, or large numbers.
By the mid-nineteenth century, 'kit' had found many companion words in expressions that meant essentially the same thing: 'kit and biling'; 'whole kit and tuck'; 'whole kit and boodle' and 'whole kit and caboodle' were all used to mean 'a whole lot' or 'everything and everyone'.
The expression 'kit and caboodle' was populated in the United States during the Civil War. The slang term was equally popular among the Blue and the Gray. Although the expression isn't as popular as it used to be. It's comforting to know that old-fashioned slang made no more sense than the modern variety."

"America the Beautiful"
Niagara Falls Reservation State Park is the oldest state park in the United States. This international tourist attraction that provides tremendous views of the falls also supports productive habitats for plants and animals. Several prime natural areas are Goat island, Green Island, Three Sister Islands and unnamed islands above the falls. Many tourists visit Goat Island for its overlooks of the cataract, as well as the upper and lower Niagara River.
It is also a wonderful natural area of ecological significance, especially for water birds. The park overlooks include the Buckhorn Island-Goat Islands Significant Coastal Fish and Wildife habitat, which is one of the most important feeding and resting waterfowl wintering areas in the northeast United States, especially for diving ducks. Large rafts of waterfowl, sometimes as many as 1,000 ducks, feed and rest on the river upstream from Goat Island.
This park offers spectacular views of thundering water, delicate mists and rainbows, tourists are invited to follow the flow of water from the interior of the United States to the Atlantic Ocean. And.....it's a great honeymoon destination.
