February 23.........PANCAKE DAY/SILENT AUCTION
OK! The Waiting is Over! It's time for Real Time Serving Pancakes, Sausages etc, this coming Thursday, February 23rd.
Didn't Doug Balkman do a magnificent last Thursday in wrapping up final details for our Annual Pancake Day and Silent Auction. Make sure you get your ticket money over to Randy, be sure those who are setting up arrive at the Activity Center around 7:45 to 8:00am. There's signs to put up, tables to cover, banners to be put up, floor coverings to be put down in the kitchen, batter to be mixed, sausage to cook, syrup to be put out, plus lots of large and small details. Everyone has the assignment sheets. Everyone knows what they should be doing. Our club is counting on everyone doing their share. Our community is looking forward to this annual affair. Our kids are counting on us, and both K-Kids and Key Club members will be helping out where they can. It's going to be a great day, so let's have fun, be cheerful, be congenial, be courteous, be sure to wear your aprons, and a hat. Sanitation is something all of us should remember. See you on Thursday!
Big Bucks Winner last Thursday!
Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle, Chester Banks won the Big Bucks again last Thursday, and he kept it. What's your secret, Chester?

Rhonda White brought two visitors to our meeting last Thursday. They were Michael Clegg, Managing Partner of the Texas RoadHouse and Amber Lopez, Managing Marketer of the Texas Road House. Glad to have Michael and Amber with us. Please come back.
Key Club Eager to Help at Pancake Day!
Last Thursday, February 16th, Gary Strunk, Randy Cook and Del Brown attended the Key Club Meeting over at SMHS. Gary is the new Kiwanis club sponsor of the Key Club, and the Key Club members are very excited about getting to work with the Kiwanis Club. They are already talking about various ways that they might help out in the Kiwanis. The subject of helping build ramps was discussed, but there has to be further information before anything is concluded on that subject.
The Key Club is looking forward to helping out at the Pancake Day event this coming Thursday, February 23. They have helped in the past and will probably furnish 8-10 club members this year.
Friends of Scouting Luncheon
Don't forget if you signed up for the Friends of Scouting Luncheon, which is this coming Tuesday, February 21, 2017, from 11:50 am - 1:00pm. Bill Pennington will be the honoree. We should all try and sit together.

February 19, 1942 - - Interment of Japanese Americans began after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order requiring those living on the Pacific coast to report for relocation. Over 110,000 persons therefore shut down their businesses, sold off their property, quit school and moved inland to the relocation centers.
February 20, 1943 - - German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel broke through American lines at Kasserine Pass in North Africa as inexperienced U.S. Troops lost their first major battle of World War II in Europe, with 1,000 Americans killed.
February 21, 1994 - - CIA agent Aldrich Ames was arrested on charges he spied for the Soviet Union from 1985-1991.
February 22, 1956 - - In Montgomery, Alabama, 80 participants in the three-month-old bus boycott voluntarily gave themselves up for arrest after an ultimatum from white city leaders. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks were among those arrested. Later in 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court mandated desegregation of the buses

"Why Do Nurses Wear White? Why do Surgeons Wear Blue or Green When Operating?"
"Florence Nightingale always wore a white uniform. White, of course is a sign of purity, and in the case of a nurse, an appropriate and practical one - white quickly shows any dirtiness.
Surgeons also wore white until 1914 when a surgeon decided that red blood against a white uniform was rather repulsive and needlessly graphic. The spinach green color he chose to replace it helped neutralize the bright red.
At the end of World War II, the lighting was changed in operating rooms, and most surgeons switched to a color called 'misty green.' Since about 1960, most surgeons have used a color called 'seal blue', which contains a lot of gray. Why this latest switch? According to experts, seal blue shows up better on the TV monitors used to demonstrate surgical techniques to medical students."

"America the Beautiful"
When Mount Mazama erupted a little less than 7,000 years ago, it's center imploded to form a caldera that gradually filled up with water, creating Crater Lake. With depths of 1,932 feet, it is the deepest lake in the united States (the seventh deepest in the world.) and is known for its stunning sapphire blue color. In 1902, Congress established the lake and some 180,000 surrounding acres as the nation's fifth national park and Oregon's first and only
Crater Lake is encircled by subtly colored cliffs fringed with hemlock, fir and pine. Access to the park is by one of three entrances on the North, South and West side. the south and West entrances are open year round. the North entrance, by way of route 138, is closed in the winter and spring.
Crater Lake National Park is located in southwest Oregon.
