We had a happy winner with our Big Bucks drawing last Thursday: Gary Strunk's name was drawn and the amount was $12.00. He put it back in, so next week it will be $14. You can't win unless you are present, and have your Kiwanis pin on.
We had a great crowd, 23 club members, to listen to Emmy
Dray, Hannah McGee and Lauren Jones talk about the great work that they are doing in the High School through the Future Farmers of America. They have about 35 members and are engaged in all the aspects, veterinary science, handling animals of all sizes. It was a pleasure listening to them - they were confident and did an excellent job of presenting. Here, our President, Tracy Herman is presenting them with a $200 support check. Thanks Ted for bringing them.
Two Significant Flag Displays last week
Election Day and Veteran's day, flags were put. It looked sort of like Election Day was going to be a rainout, but some flags were put up when it appeared the weather was improving. Thanks to Randy Cook, Charles Johnson, Doug Balkman, Gary Strunk and James Collier, who took the chance and got some flags up.
Then on VETERAN'S DAY, flags were put out in full strength. Del wants to thank Frederick for putting up the flags and taking them down for Route 4. It was a labor of love. Our Program for this coming Thursday, November 17, 2016.
Francis Mendez will be bringing the program for this week. It will be Dr. Jesus Jimenez from Texas State University Engineering Department. His research interests are modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems, especially semiconductor manufacturing. Also, manufacturing applications of simulation, operations research and statistics.
Specifically he will be dealing with the new Masters program in Engineering and the projects that they work with businesses in San Marcos

Picking up pretty much where we were last week, talking about leadership in Kiwanis...."There is more than holding an elected office or having an appointed responsibility. Every organization has members who, because of their experience, knowledge or natural talents, influences the thinking of others.....whether or not these leaders hold an office. Their records of accomplishment provide the credibility essential to leadership.
With the possible exception of the Club Secretary and Treasurer - - the bulwarks of continuity in many clubs, we replace our top leadership every year in most clubs. It's the best defense against Peter's Principle of Institutionalized Incompetence that says We promote workers until they reach a position in which they are incompetent....and then we leave them there forever. The elected leaders of Kiwanis, too, can sometimes attain positions for which they are incompetent, but the misery (theirs & ours) lasts only a year.
In a remark that made him famous, the Roman historian Tacitus, of the Emperor Galba, wrote"No one would have doubted his ability to reign had he never been emperor.Galba lead Rome for only a year just as Kiwanis presidents lead their clubs for only one year, but his soldiers beheaded Galba (for failing to pay them as promised for overthrowing Nero) - - a fate Kiwanis leaders are normally spared.

"America the Beautiful"
The old St. Joseph's Cemetery in Rayne Louisiana is listed in 'Ripley's Believe It or Not', as the only known cemetery in the United States facing north & south, unlike the traditional east-west orientation. It is believed, with the project too far along to change the direction of graves, the gravediggers simply misunderstood the instructions given to him.
Rayne is also known as Louisiana's Frog Capital of the world.
