Newly Elected President, Tracy Herman held her first club meeting last Thursday, Oct. 6, and laid out her goals for the year, calling attentions of the various activities which we are responsible for. She went over what our Yearly and On going Events that we are responsible for. The Yearly Events include Pancake Dinner, including soliciting for silent auction - Pumpkin Dash Race - Moe's Half Marathon - Veteran's Day Parade - Club Financial Audit. The on-going events which occur throughout the year are: Putting Out Flags - Inter-Club visits - Community Support Committee - Scholarship Committee - McBride Wilson Youth Camp - Our Sponsored Youth programs, i.e. K-Club, Builder's Club, K-Kids, Terrific Kids, and could include Scouting programs and Athletic clubs/
The Special Events that need to be addressed are: Kiwanis Webpage - Program Organizer - Bulletin Editor - Business Expo - Membership
Growth Committee (very important) - Public Relations (also very important) - Installation of new members in conjunction with Membership Committee.
As you all know, on the home page of this bulletin, you will see many Site Pages. These pages will provide names of committees and committee chairpersons, as well as other pertinent information. Click on any one of these Site Pages and it will provide up to date information, valuable to our club. There are also links that will take you to District and International Kiwanis News. Please take advantage of these links to gain a more comprehensive idea of the entire Kiwanis program.
Our Speaker for this coming Thursday!
Francis Mendez will be bringing Dr. J. Jimenez, Associate Professor of the Engineering Department at Texas State university. His research interests have been 'modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems, especially semiconductor manufacturing. Also manufacturing application of simulation, operations research, and statistics. He will also talk about the new Master's program, and Capstone Projects.
There are a variety of capstone projects. Some include case studies, program evaluations, outcomes -based evaluations, surveys, focus groups, etc. Each master's program has a different set of capstone projects that students can complete for graduation.

Terrific Kids Induction , Friday, October 14, 2016.
This photo was taken last year at our Terrific Kids's Induction and we had ten Kiwanis members there to help them celebrate. This year's Induction Ceremony will be this Friday, October 14, beginning at 2:00pm in the cafeteria of DeZavala Elementary School. This is a big event for these kids and we need to have as many Kiwanians out to support them. We have a brand new sponsor for K-Kids and she is very excited and enthusiastic about doing as much with these kids as she can. She needs our support. Her name is Brittany Bouzard. Randy is our club's sponsor, so let's have as many or more turn out this coming Friday. Arrive about 1:45, check in at the office and then go right to the cafeteria.

Structure of Kiwanis (continued from last week)
"A typical Kiwanis club has 30-40 members, although there is enormous variability in size. A few clubs number fewer than 10 members and the largest with more than 500 members, is larger than most divisions.
The conventional Kiwanis wisdom is that clubs below 25 members are "sub critical" (to borrow a term from nuclear science). Proportionately speaking, small clubs must spend more of their time just dealing with the administrative details of being a club and less time remains to do community service - - the main work of the club. There are exceptions, of course. Some small clubs are remarkably productive and some large clubs can barely manage to meet for lunch every week. On the average, clubs with 40-70 members produce more service per member than clubs of any other size.
Each club consists of several committees. (Very small clubs, for practical reasons, sometimes function simply as "committees of the whole," but even there, club ByLaws, strictly interpreted, require a committee structure) Except for their weekly meetings and a few social functions, the "real work" of clubs happens in COMMITTEES. They are so important Kiwanis requires that every club have certain 'Standing Committees'.
Every Kiwanian belongs to a committee and it's one of the Club President's responsibilities to make those appointments. If you don't know which committee you are assigned to, run, don't walk, to your president, and ask for your assignment. (More on committees next week)

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky contains three rivers, two lakes and one "sea". It was discovered in 1799 by a hunter tracking a wounded animal. Because Mammoth Cave has a constant 54 degree Fahrenheit temperature, it breathes in when the outside temperature is higher and "exhales" when the temperature is lower.
