Our Program Last Thursday!
Didn't last Thursday's program just feel good? And justifiably so? Chester Bank brought Clyde Schneider to us and for about 30 minutes, he just kept us roaring in laughter. Clyde is what we call a Cowboy Humorist, and he kept us roaring in laughter the whole time. Laughter is good for the soul, I've been told, and last Thursday was a good example. In addition to all of his quips and jokes, he also told us about his work which was to make wire cages to capture predators that might wander into one's property. He showed pictures of them, from the smallest to the largest cage, and the type of animals he would cage, such as skunks, armadillos, etc. It truly was an enjoyable time with Clyde. He even told some Aggie jokes, Thanks Chester and Clyde.
Our (puff puff) Program this coming Thursday, April 26th.
I say 'Puff Puff', because Moe Johnson is bringing the program to our club, and everyone know's Moe's kind of programs. Moe's program is entitled, 'The Dark Side of Fitness and Teaching Physical Education.' I know that this program, you will not want to omiss. See you Thursday!
"We All Can Use Prayers throughout Our Lifetime!
Keep Glen & Marylou Rydl in our prayers. Marylou is taking therapy for her recent broken hip. Let us keep the Breihan family in our prayers after learning that Francis's sister, Beverly Turner passed away on April 15th. Also help keep John Polk his usual upbeat attitude as he deals with another cancer.
Will Wonders never cease! Two weeks ago, Chester Banks won the Big Bucks. This past week, Chester's guest drew out Del Brown's name. He turned it back in to grow.

Kiwanis International is over 100 years old and is in more than 30 countries.
The next meetings are April 24th, at 6:30pm and April 25th at 12:00 noon. It will be held in the Orchard Park of Kyle-Senior Living Center, 4701 Ratcliffe Drive, Kyle, TX 78640. Refreshments will be served.

The K-Kids are helping Homeless Families!
Last Thursday morning at 8am, Chester Banks, Randy Cook, Doug Balkman, Jeanne Balkman and Del Brown joined the K-Kids over at DeZavala School, and participated with them and their sponsor, Brittany, in composing notes of encouragement to place in sacks with some goodies in them for children that are homeless. We have some excellent school clubs in our community, and the K-Kids are one of them. If y8ou were not able to get over there last Thursday, you mkissed a real treat. These children went at their project with great enthusiasm. They will be meeting again on May 10th. I hope we can have more of our members join us. You all need to know what our Kiwanis club is doing in our schools to help the children learn to become good citizens in our community.
Boy, our club knows how to have a Club Social!
Last Thursday night, 19 members and their significant others all gathered for just a good old Club Social. We all gathered at the Grist Mill in Gruene Texas, and it was a fantastic evening. The food was delicious, and plenty of it. Most of us had to take boxes home to enjoy the food another day. And those desserts! Wow!! Maybe we'll have twice as many next time we have our 'Good Time Together'. Let's plan on it.
Another Ramp Build......
Another Ramp was build on April 18, 2018 by Gary Nelson and Bill Stich (SM Warhouse Tx Ramps). It was built for Samuel Garza, 304 Magnolia St. San Marcos, TX.
It was only 8 feet long and took 3 hours to build.
The second Ramp ( right hand photo) that was built was for Cynthia Cruz on April 14, 2018. It was 28 feet long with a wedge at the front door. The wedge was 4 feet. The Builders for this ramp was Lockhart Kiwanis Club, San Marcos Warehouse team, Texas Ramps, CEO John Laine and exchange student girls from Lockhart. This ramp only took 3 hours.

April 20. 1999 - - The deadliest school shooting in U.S. history occurred in Littleton, Colorado, as two students armed with guns and explosives stormed in Columbine High School at lunch time, then killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded more than 20 other persons before killing themselves.
April 21, 1836 - - The Battle of San Jacinto between Texans, led by Sam Houston and Mexican forces led by Santa Anna took place near present day Houston. The Texans decisively defeated the Mexican forces thereby achieving independence.
April 22, 1864 - - "In God We Trust" was included on all newly minted U.S. coins by an Act of Congress.
April 23, 1564 - - William Shakespeare was born at Stratford-on-Avon, England. Renown as the most influential writer in the English language, he created 36 plays and 154 sonnets, including Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice.
April 24, 1800 - - The Library of Congress was established in Washington, D.C. It is America's oldest federal cultural institution and the world's largest library. Among the 145 million items in it's collections are more than 33 million books, 3 million recordings, 12.5 million photographs, 5.3 million maps, 6 million pieces of sheet music and 63 million manuscripts. About 10,000 new items are added each day.
April 25, 1967 - - The first law legalizing abortion was signed by Colorado John Love, allowing abortions in cases in which a panel of three doctors unanimously agreed.
April 26, 1944 - - Federal troops seized the Chicago offices of Montgomery Ward and removed its chairman after his refusal to obey President Roosevelt's order to recognize a CIO union. The seizure ended when unions won an election to represent the company's workers.
"Semordnilap" is a word that spells a different word forward and backward, such as faced and decaf. Try them out and I'll have the answers in next weeks bulletin.

"Paint the Town Red"
The phrase "paint the town red" most likely owes its origin to one legendary night of drunkenness. In 1837, the Marquis of Waterford - - a known lush and mischief maker - - led a group of friends on a night of drinking through the English town of Melton Mowbray. The bender culminated in vandalism after Waterford and his fellow revelers knocked over flowerpots, pulled knockers off of doors and broke the windows of some of the town's buildings. To top it all off, the mob literally painted a tollgate, the doors of several homes and a swan statue with red paint. The marquis and his pranksters later compensated Melton for the damages, but their drunken escapade is likely the reason that 'paint the town red' became shorthand for a wild night out. Still yet another theory suggests the phrase was actually born out of the brothels of the American West, and referred to men behaving as though their whole town were a red light district.

White Sands National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in the state of New Mexico on the north side of Route 70 about 16 miles southwest of Alamogordo in western Otero County and northeastern Dona Ana County. The monument is situated at an elevation of 4,235 feet in the mountain-ringed Tularosa Basin and comprises the southern part of a 275 square mile field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. The gypsum dune field is the largest of its kind on Earth.
The first Euro-American exploration was led by a party of US Army officers in 1849. the Mescalero Apache were already living in the area at the time. Hispanic families started farming communities in the at Tularosa in 1861 and at La Luz in 1863.
The monument is completely surrounded by military installations (White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base).
