"O.K"
" I am sure that everyone probably knows that 'O.K' means that everything is fine. But the phrase originated with President Martin Van Buren, when he was running for his second term as president. He was born in Kinderhook, New York. And his nickname was 'Old Kinderhook.' So his fans formed a campaign committee called the 'Democratic O.K. (old kinderhood) Club.' The campaign slogan spread from then on."
"We All Can Use Prayers throughout Our Lifetime!
Keep Glen & Marylou Rydl and Ted & Francis Breihan in our prayers. Ted is back home after doing rehabilitation following a broken hip, and is improving nicely. Marylou fell and broke her hip and went through surgery last week. She is recovering nicely. Talked with John Polk about Mary having been in the hospital, but she is home now and gradually improving. John is steadily being diligent in taking his cancer medication.
Well, I'll be......dogged if Chester Banks didn't have his name from Big Bucks again, and guess what..........he kept it. Congrats Chester!
What is a Humorist?
Well, when you consider such terms as amusing, funny, funny, entertaining, comic, comical, lighthearted in spirit, diverting, witty, jocular, tongue in cheek, wry, waggish, whimsical, playful, hilarious, uproarious etc., then you have a humorist. Chester Banks is bringing the program this coming Thursday, April 19th and he is bringing a Humorist. Your editor has forgotten his name, but Chester assures me that by the time he finishes with the program, we will all remember his name. This sounds like a most unique type program, so let's not miss it!
Don't Forget our Club Social this coming Thursday, April 19th.
Last Thursday, Rhonda White passed around a sign up sheet to indicate who was planning on going to the Grist Mill for a Club Social Get Together on Thursday night, April 19th, at 6:30pm. The reason for the sign up is for seating purposes.

"Let's Be There for Our K-Kids! New Date....This coming Thursday! April 19th
We have a great opportunity to sit in on our K-Kids as they wrap special bags for the homeless. They have been planning this and it's going to take place on Thursday morning, April 19th over at De-Zavala Elementary School. They are also going to be discussing other ways to help our community. Also they will be selling childhood cancer awareness bracelets at this meeting, and the proceeds will be going to Camp Wapiyap, which is a summer camp for children facing pediatric cancer. Let's have 5 or six Kiwanians show up and give them a hand. Be there by 8:00am.

April 13. 1743 - - Thomas Jefferson was born in Albermarle County, Virginia. He was an author, inventor, lawyer, politician, architect and one of the finest minds of the 1700's. He authored the American Declaration of Independence and later served as the 3rd U.S. President from 1801 to 1809. He died on July 4, 1826, the same day as his old friend and one-time political rival John Adams.
April 14, 1828 - - The first dictionary of American-style English was published by Noah Webster as the American Dictionary of the English Language.
April 15, 1817 - - The first American school for the deaf was founded by Thomas H. Gallauder and Laurent Clere in Hartford, Connecticut.
April 16, 1862 - - Congress abolished slavery in the District of Columbia and appropriated $1 million to compensate owners of freed slaves.
April 17, 1989 - - The Polish labor union Solidarity was granted legal status after nearly a decade of struggle, paving the way for the downfall of the Polish Communist Party. In the elections that followed, Solidarity candidates won 99 out of 100 parliamentary seats and eventually forced the acceptance of a Solidarity government led by Lech Walesa.
April 18, 1942 - - The first air raid on mainland Japan during World War II occurred as General James Doolittle led a squadron of B-25 bombers taking off from the carrier Hornet to bomb Tokyo and three other cities. Damage was minimal, but the raid boosted Allied morale following years of unchecked Japanese military advances.
April 19, 1993 - - At Waco, Texas, the compound of the Branch Davidian religious cult burned to the ground with 82 persons inside, including 17 children. The fire erupted after federal agents battered buildings in the compound with armored vehicles following a 51 day standoff.

"The phrase "turn a blind eye" - - often used to refer to a willful refusal to acknowledge a particular reality - - dates back to a legendary chapter in the career of the British naval hero Horatio Nelson. During 1801's Battle of Copenhagen, Nelson's ships were pitted against a large Danish-Norwegian fleet. When his more conservative superior officer flagged for him to withdraw, the one-eyed Nelson supposedly brought his telescope to his bad eye and blithely proclaimed, 'I really do not see the signal.' He went on to score a decisive victory. Some historians have since dismissed Nelson's famous quip as merely a battlefield myth, but the phrase 'turn a blind eye' persists to this day."

The Great State of .......TEXAS!
1.....The only place in the world where they make Dr Pepper according to the original formula is in Dublin, Texas. Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885. There is no period after the Dr in Dr Pepper!
2.....According to the Texas Department of Transportation, one person is killed annually painting stripes on the state's highways and roads.
3.....People who moved to Lockhart, Texas in the 1950's are still considered by natives of the town to be newcomers.
4.....The world's largest oatmeal cake was baked and built in Bertram, Texas during Labor Day weekend 1991. The 33 layer cake stood more than three feet tall, weighed 333 pounds, and served 3,333 people.
5.....Texas boasts the largest of all the state capitol buildings, constructed of 15,000 carloads of pink granite.
6....Dallas' corner of Elm and Houston streets has a sordid history. The building completed there in November 1898 was struck by lightning and burned to the ground in May 1901. "America the Beautiful - Longhorn Cavern State Park, Texas....
Longhorn Cavern State Park is 645.62 acres of rugged Hill Country south of Burnet in Burnet County. The state acquired Longhorn Cavern from private owners in 1932 to 1937. The park ope4ned in 1938, and was designated a National Natural Landmark.
Over the last million years, water left a thick layer of mud and debris in the cave. As a result, early visitors could only use a small area of the cavern.
The cavern has provided shelter since prehistoric times. Some of the earliest visitors were area's prehistoric peoples. They used the large room next to the main entrance for shelter.
Many legends and stories surround the cave. According to one, the outlaw Sam Bass hid a $2 million cache of stolen money inside. Of course there's no evidence that Sam Bass ever visited the cave. Another legend says Texas Rangers rescued a kidnapped girl from Indians in the cave. Confederates made gunpowder in the cave during the Civil War. Stories like these drew tourists as early as the turn of the 20th century. By the 1920's, the main room served as a dance hall and concert venue."
